Although the owners were lovely the resort was run down and falling apart. The paths to the bungalows were super muddy and every walk resulted in muddy feet and shoes. Had to take a boat to the island in the absolute pouring rain and the boat they sent had no cover, so we were completely drenched by the time we got to the island, along with our luggage. The restaurant doesn’t offer you food choices. They serve what they have which is extremely limited. At no point did we see the prices, which we realised afterwards was expensive. For one night, dinner, breakfast and boat ride both ways for 2 ppl was $600 TOP, which we felt was way too much for the quality of stay, food and transportation. Would not recommend.

Not as advertised

We stayed at Mala Island as a group of 10 - 2 families. We were not disappointed. The rooms were comfy and simple with amazing views. What was the best part was the hospitality - nothing was a problem. We had our meals included in our package and they were hearty and plenty of it. Fish was incredible.Thank you Nesha and Olivia for being such great hosts.

Excellent Stay.

A small beautiful island with sand beach surrounded by corals and clean warm water where you can snorkel and kayak or just having relax time with a book on the beach. Takes 15 minutes to take a walk round the island on a path through the forest. Takes 30 minutes for circumnavigate the island when low tide. Chef cooks delicious meal every day. The owner is very generous and employees are so kind and friendly. They also perform a tongan fest, dancing traditional tongan dancing. Sunday evening meals are tongan traditional food cooked in earth oven. 
From the room I could hear the ocean and see the ocean. Water is so clear I could see fish swimming from the balcony of the dining hall. Free wifi works in dining hall. I stayed there for 2 weeks. 

Wonderful place with very kind Tongan people

Want to say that our stay here the last 2 weeks was spectacular.  Beautiful views and the small but attentive staff watched over our every need.  Our water taxi was perfect.  Rooms just fine for a small island.    A fan in every room would be helpful. Tongan dancing was lovely.  We enjoyed the simple comfort and quiet including snorkeling the Japanese garden

superb almost private island

Mala is a lovely little offshore island conveniently situated within easy reach of the main centre, with other interesting places to explore nearby. More a home stay than a fancy resort, Neesha and Ollie are very accommodating and will do anything for you if you are prepared to ask. The fales are very spacious (we had two queen beds in ours) and nicely decorated inside with tapa and woven mats. The terrace where we ate was a great place to watch the comings and goings, Ollie and Neesha's three children playing on the beach, or watch the sunset.

The snorkeling was interesting, and we took the free kayaks to Swallow's Cave - such a highlight that we got a local boatman to take us a second time (the weather was rougher and we didn't fancy kayaking the long distance back against the wind). The cave is well worth a visit and it is amazing to snorkel in the clear water and see the shoals of fish.

We chose to cater for our own breakfast and lunches, but the food was simple, fresh and so plentiful that, after the first night, we asked Ollie if we could share a main meal between us for the following nights! The lobster was divine, and the fish so fresh and tasty we didn't want to eat anything else!

A nice place for a complete rest, but with other activities like snorkeling, kayaking or exploring other islands if you so wish. Just remember you are in a relatively isolated  and undeveloped part of Tonga, and the kind of tourist facilities that you might get somewhere like Fiji are not available here. Neesha and Ollie do a wonderful job with what is available.

Great situation

Neesha and Ollie looked after as well I've r our 10 day stay at Mala.  We stayed in fale 4 which had a great view of sunset and a short climb down to our own little private beach. Which the kids did.  We brought our own snorkeling gear after reading the reviews and RealTonga were lenient in the luggage allowance.  I think it helped we had connecting international flights. Our rooms were quaint, need probably a little love but were ok for us. We had read about Tonga and were prepared.  I slept with door open and sea breeze on my face and never bothered about locking anything as there were almost no one else around.  The stand out was how helpful and cheerful Neesha and Ollie were, nothing was too much of a hassle and we stayed there a while so we saw them help others also.  Suniya was always on call to pick you up by boat to/from diving or whale swimming.  All companies pick up from Mala so that is no issue.   Agree you should bring some snacks over, there is no menu so helps to have some buffer food particular if you have children. Which I did.  They were happy to allow me to use kitchen if need be, but in the end I reminded myself I was on holiday and left the cooking to them.  Church on kappa island was also worth getting up for.  By the time I left i was extremely relaxed, the frenzy of activity initially gave way to just relaxing w the kids in the sea. Great break.  Note Neesha recommends July August for the whales, it was getting near end of season when we were there.

The staff provided excellent service in assisting with all concerns with neesha happy to make calls for you if needed.

You will be served Large , and well cooked and prepared meals , tea always on offer as well as beers and coke. Enough to satisfy anyone! A tongan feast is good to see on sunday and a BBQ dinner on Saturday.

The overall resort offered a not so modern feel that was relaxing and peaceful that you simply must experience.

Yes keys are available for your room with spare master key that management has if you are concerned!  I stayed 6 nights over September and experienced no issues. Please note a travel adapter is useful here as it uses US wall sockets.

There is a beautiful reef just off main beach and is best enjoyed if you have gear borrowed off your whale swim company.

Also on offer is yoga , kyaking and a 15-20min walk around island and a small pig in the loss that you got to keep an eye out for ;)
 
The conditions may not be perfect but it's tonga after all... and you are given a warm welcome with quality staff and in a peaceful setting with great sunsets from restaurant.
