I love this place - the quirkiest hotel in Istanbul; huge rooms, daft decor, friendly staff and an excellent rooftop bar on two levels.
On this visit we were staying elsewhere, but we made sure to visit the roof bar.
As the sun sets, it's magical. The lights start flickering on, the sky turns into a rich mix of reds, oranges and blues, and the cocktails just slip down.

As a longtime Istanbul resident, I was most disappointed when I visited the terrace for a drink with three out of town visitors. We arrived around 11.30p.m. were completely ignored for 5 mins (there were three other people in the bar). Eventually, when I went to the waiter to order, he told me that they were closed. I asked what was closing time….it was 30 mins. later. I said that my friends had come a long way, that we would have a drink and leave before their closing time. The response was rude and there was a strong reluctance to serve. I prevailed and we were served with a COLD reluctance. 
This was not my first time having similar experiences at the hotel but until now. On another occasion while there to celebrate a friend’s birthday, we asked for a menu to be told that they don’t have a physical menu, so we asked them to just tell us a few of the options. They refused to list them and said we could read their Qcode if we wanted to find out. There have also been other similar episodes but it is a location that I like and want to like, so I have overlooked them. However, they need to change their staff if they want to gain a loyal customer base. On the way out, I explained the experience to a person who claimed to be the manager. He was completely unsympathetic and, like his pathetic waiters, just didn’t want to bother. 

Small praise for the staff at Grand Hotel de Londres! 

I went to the roof top bar of the hotel with three friends. We arrived at 23.40 and waited for about 5 minutes before calling a waiter. He told us that they were closed. We asked about time they closed and we were told midnight. A friend pointed out that it wasn’t 12 yet.  The waiter then brought us our drinks. The manner and approach of staff was so lacking in hospitality and professionalism- so unlike my usual experience in Istanbul. Luckily , our visiting friends  had a wonderful week in Istanbul but this was a disappointing last night.

Disappointing!

Built in 1892, this hotel is quite interesting.  I felt like I was still living in the times of the Ottoman Empire, with the rooms decorated so beautifully, and the common areas splendidly adorned.  But, admittedly, it does need a lot of updating, with tired-looking furnishings.  Nevertheless, I still give it a 4 star.  Staff was efficient.  Location was good for exploring Istiklal, the famous pedestrian street.  Trams and funicular were close by.  Wonderful restaurants in the area abound.  Rooftop bar is very nice.

Interesting hotel built in 1892.  Good location.

I was for the first time in turkey, and I choose this hotel because the pictures are amazing. 
The reality is different. 
Everything is not only old but very dirty and not at all hygienic 😧
I suppose there are a few rooms with balcony that look better. 
But that is normal and ok. The problem is that they should do a renovation, especially the bathrooms. Too bad because its a nice building with a nice history! The food was as well very poor. 
The stars are for the location and friendly reception.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel; the decor is charming and walking inside feels like taking a step back in time. The rooms are at excellent value and all the staff are extremely attentive and helpful. The rooftop terrace is fantastic, with a breathtaking view of the Golden Horn. We couldn’t recommend this hotel more highly, and will definitely be coming back!

A hidden gem of Istanbul

As a first time traveller , Although the hotel was superbly located , for which I have given  an extra star but the bathroom was tiny , and needed renovation . The rooms were too noisy as the streets were buzzing and one couldn’t sleep unless the windows were shut . There was only a fan and no ac so due summers  one had to keep opening the windows ! 
The staff was very friendly and accommodating . 
So , if your looking at not staying in the room much,  a place like this is perfect with the location etc  but for families  that need cleaner rooms and bathrooms wouldn’t suggest a place like this ! 
Pls book your transfers online through companies that can give pvt cars ..  they are much cheaper than the hotel shuttle ! 
Also if your a large group or travelling with kids pls use taxis  , fix a rate after consulting reception or go by meter as it’s much easier and cheaper ! 
There is a fabulous Irani restaurant right behind the hotel called shamse .. if you like kebabs and rice this place is fab and cheap ! 
There is another place right opp Taj Mahal indian Resturant ( very close to the hotel ) playing jazz music  with wonderful food .. great place to unwind after a long day … there are loads of pubs around too near this place … we loved the Irish pub … was buzzing and lively … . We were there over the weekend … hope this review helps !! Cheers

Our trip was fab but hotel could have been better

It was a horrible night we had! We booked for four nights, after the first night we decided that we couldn't stay here any longer.

The hotel has not a "old hotel vibe". It is really old, it stinks disgusting and is dirty everywhere. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed i have ever had. The bathroom was like a scene in a horror movie. You will think that this hotel never has been cleaned. The room smelled like old tobacco, you could tell that they smoked in the room. The service was not friendly, we wanted our money back, the only thing the receptionist said we should write to our booking website. No help, no apology, nothing.

Don't visit this hotel! Most of the reviews are fake! You will have a horrible experience.  The surroundings to the hotel are very bad! It is a very bad atmosphere and the whole night it was too loud! We only could sleep like 2 or 3 hours. A nightmare!

Don't book here! It was a nightmare! Fake reviews all over!

The staff was very helpful (taxi bookings, information, organizing hamam, printing documents because of flight changes etc.) and friendly. The rooms could be cleaner and some parts are a bit run-down but overall still a house with charme. The room was quite spacious. If returning to Istanbul I would book here again.

I don't usually write comments but definitely recommend this hotel -especially Agatha Christie room- to everyone as the best hotel stay ever! And the breakfast buffet is unbelievable. I'll be back for my 40th birthday celebrations to stay a week next year.
