It's a bit rough and ready but welcome was genuine and warm. It is a budget hotel and the sheets were clean and bed were very comfortable and that alone was worth the money. 
There is a lack of budget hotels or b&bs in the area its mainly higher end. Which when you are volunteering (and funding yourself) at a sporting event, is all you need. 
It suited to stay in Alford and for that reason I would stay there again and most likely will next year.

Make your own mind up

Evening meal and a few drinks in this lovely local hotel. Food was spot on and inexpensive, drinks were value for money. A good honest pub with very friendly staff, we will definitely return before heading home.

Very friendly & helpful. Not large selection of on tap beer but you know it did not matter. We did not eat there but had very good menu for veggies & you could get a take away.  After a long walk sitting outside in the sun was very pleasant. I’d recommend it.

Friendly in Tarland

There should be a health warning issued with the Booking.com site where we found the hotel.  

The room smelt of musty, foosty, damp and sweat and the place could be doing with a damned good clean. The bed smelt of sweat and damp too :(.

The shower was full of black mould: Black mold can be dangerous to your health, mainly causing respiratory issues. But in severe cases and for people with pre-existing health conditions, black mold can lead to pneumonia. 

The toilet looked relatively clean until you lifted the seat and lid - OMG! Stale pee and stains along with dust and whatever else had found its way into the nooks and crannies. Disgusting!

Couldn't wait to get out in the morning - no shower or wash; went to a hotel in Ballater to get rid of the smell, grime, beasties and whatever else came out of that room in the Aberdeen Arms Hotel Tarland - yuck!

How the hell 2 stars was achieved is beyond comprehension.

Stayed here last night after cutting our camping trip short at last minute.

Very friendly on arrival. Proper local pub. They had a live act on that evening. A couple playing traditional Scottish music on the fifepipes and fiddle. 

The room was OK for us. There was a microwave, fridge, kettle and TV. 

We stayed with our dog so I don't normally book anywhere fancy as he leaves a hairy trail!

I really want to leave as many positives as I can because of the freindliness but unfortunately I have a few negatives 😔

My mattress was collapsed at the head end (springs shot)

After my shower there was a very unpleasant smell emanating from the bathroom (sulphur like)

The tea and coffee tray had been there a while.. there was dust inside it.

Breakfast was substantial.. cereal, toast, coffee, juice, full cooked (we payed 8.00).. the owner was lovely and generous, asking if we needed extras. However, it wasn't to my personal taste. (sausages and bacon were cheap) but my friend really enjoyed it.

I would stay here again if they changed the mattresses..  and sorted out the plumbing. 

Perfectly adequate for backpackers, etc wanting a no frills stay.

Last minute booking

Brilliant home made meals, stay, rooms, breakfast and service with great company, locals and hosts. Will return & highly recommend. Exceptional value for money from this Royal Deeside family run hotel.

Superb!

The pub was very welcoming to tourists and locals. We immediately felt at home and started chatting with people. We ate dinner there and the food was all freshly cooked from scratch - and delicious. This is real home cooked food - not high end restaurant cuisine with good fresh local ingredients.

Booked this accommodation having not fully read all the reviews- what a mistake! On Entering the lobby the smell was absolutely disgusting, it smelled like raw sewerage. The carpets up to the room needed a good clean, the room smelled foisty even with windows open and it was freezing the   bathroom was dirty and had mouldy sealant round the shower cubicle.  We had two single beds pushed together and on inspection of the sheets would not have put a dog on there. 

We went with friends and there room was a triple and was even worse than ours. The linen was so bad that there was black mould and sweat marks on the pillows the sheets were disgusting and the mattresses sunk in the middle.  The young chap actually said no one had checked the room in the last six months, he then said he would personally change the beds and tidy up. I did say sorry not good enough and demanded a refund, which he didn’t argue with and refunded us in full. 

We had traveled quite a distance to visit Balmoral and it’s a shame as the location for us was ideal. This property has bags of potential but needs a lot of money spending on it to bring up to a basic standard. In the meantime, would benefit from a deep clean, before it’s closed down by Environmental Health

. Avoid this B&B at all costs. It’s a health hazard

Booked in on the 25th June for 2 nights, travelled for 6 hours and got there about 6 o'clock  the room was filthy carpets hadn't been cleaned for months , bathroom was a Covid hot spot , but the worst of all this was the bedding absolutely filthy ,dirty and stinking . you could obviously see it hadn't been changed for months. i wouldn't let a dog sleep in it ,the staff were bits of kids and the lady doing the cooking in the bar looked like she needed a good scrub , we had to try and find somewhere else to stay which was a pain . please do not go near this hovel .
