We booked a room online for two nights without a Loch view, shortly before the recent TV programme - "Amazing hotels", and asked for dinner for both evenings at 7pm. I received a confirmatory email which said we could only have one meal in the main Restaurant, and the other would have to be in the brasserie - which appeared to serve little more than sophisticated pub food. So I called the following morning to ask if we could have a room with a loch view, and was told that we could for the following two days at a considerably increased price but with dinner in the restaurant on one evening. Fair enough, I said, but I'd like to consult my wife. Ten minutes later I called back, only to be told that I could now not have even one dinner in the main restaurant. So I said we'd then go back to our original booking (which I had not cancelled), only to be told that our dinner reservation had now been taken. To say that I was displeased was an understatement, and we cancelled the entire visit and asked for our deposit back, which was agreed. I then emailed the owners, explaining what had happened, and reminding them that during the TV programme Giles Coren, the presenter, had taken part in a training session on how to deal with dissatisfied customers. I said that I was extremely dissatisfied. I then received a phone call from the owner, but while she apologised, there was no attempt to meet even one of my requests, explaining that Covid19 limited the number of diners, but she could not attempt to explain why they had cancelled my original booking while I had not. If one books bed and breakfast for more than £400 a night, one can reasonably expect to be able to eat in the main restaurant.We will no longer want to go to Torridon, which in our opinion can no longer be classed as an Amazing Hotel.

Booking disaster

Visited with my partner, brother and his wife to celebrate my 50th birthday in February 2020. I have stayed before (in 2002) but had not returned since. 

The Torridon is in a spectacular setting which is delightfully difficult to reach: no public transport in this neck of the woods! 

We flew into Inverness Airport from Heathrow and picked up a very nice BMW X1 from the Sixt car rental place. 

With four seasons in the same day including my favourite (snow!) we arrived at Loch Torridon and from there to the inn and hotel. 

The afternoon tea was tasty, and evening meal in the inn (rather than hotel) was equally so. The beds in the inn were lovely and comfortable too. 

Breakfast the following morning was lovely and off on the road back to London.

My Birthday

Just a beautiful hotel in glorious countryside in the Scottish highlands. Staff were wonderful from when we arrived and made us very welcome. Liam (and his twin brother!) looked after us extremely well in the wonderful Whiskey and Gin Bar! Views are spectacular! Full Scottish breakfast was gorgeous and dinner at the Inn was great! Can not wait to go again!

Fabulous hotel in beautiful Scottish highlands

What a location to arrive at. Winding single track A road to this remote, idealic part of Scotland. Passing a film crew en route filming a zombie movie. It was more Rob Roy country. Arriving at this turreted country house accompanied by amazing weather proved beyond expectations visually. Knowing we always ask for a room with a view we couldn't wait. Imagine the disappointment when we were taken to a room at the back of the hotel. A view over roof/driveway and side view of pathway. Windows both looking down towards other bedrooms. No loch in sight. Lacking proof of having asked for such, we settled into a lavish styled room, with no view, but, with an amazing bath! Comfort though, was second to none.  
The staff were polite and courteous. Complementary tea/coffee after checking in. Playing scrabble. The gin selection was great as was the whisky selection. The food was absolutely fine...no grumble with our choices, but do feel they need to up their game for DB&B prices. Lack of canapés at this level? Sad it was only olives and nuts. They coped with our alternative selection of cooked breakfast. The sun proved a problem for butter and cold meat and cheeses on the breakfast side table. This needs to be rethought for warm weather.
BUT. We would definitely return. The area is beautiful. Wildlife; wonderful sightings. 
Great walking from the doorstep.
The moral of this story being: Always ask for a room with a loch view and keep the documentation!

A Room with No View

This was our final stop on NC500 trip. We were pleased to reach hotel after quite a bit of driving on single track roads. On check in we were met by two ladies..one Scottish and a younger lady that i took to be French about which more later.
Lovely room and main public rooms have beautiful views to mountains and the loch.
Our evening meal was excellent and we were admirably looked after by Simon and Severin. They were excellent and service was top class but not intrusive. The bar has an amazing selection of single malts.
    On check out next morning the aforementioned French (?) receptionist was on duty. I found her to be remote and lacking warmth of all other staff members

Grand Hotel

We pulled up at The Torridon with high expectations. The cost is extreme but we had conditioned ourselves to be impressed with the service, food and facilities. On checking in we are shuffled to the Inn and then are promptly told there are no vacancies at restaurant but it should be OK to get a meal at the Inn. I pushed a little harder for a restaurant booking to no avail. We paid GBP 240 In Aussie dollars that is almost $400 AUD to sleep in a bunk house and get pub food. The Torridon looks OK on the surface but scratch below the surface and you will find there is little substance.

Overpriced and under delivered

The hotel's pricing is premium (£420 DB&B in our case) which is why we felt the quality was just short of the mark. It was by no means a poor experience and we certainly enjoyed our stay.
The welcome was efficient and friendly although not quite warm and the registration process was smooth. We were shown to our room and offered complimentary tea/coffee.
The room was lovely. Very high quality fixtures and fittings. It was cosy and warm. The tea/coffee tray well provisioned with quality items. Just what you want to be met with having scaled Beinn Damph in the clouds.
The lounge/bar area is well appointed and stocked with an array of board games and books. Staff are on-hand to keep you plied with whatever you choose.
The whisky bar has an array of drams numbering over 300 - some run-of-the mill but many interesting drams to discover. Sadly there is no list or indeed price-list so you either have to ask the price of every dram you fancy or accept the risk. Happily, the pricing is very fair for a premium Scottish hotel; none of the abhorrent profiteering you find elsewhere.The bar staff were willing, but not knowledgeable about their stock - this is a key failing for me in a hotel whose whisky bar features heavily in their marketing.
You are asked to be available 30mins ahead of your dinner booking which is common in this standard of establishment. We were served what was mis-described as canapes - nuts and olives - in the bar area. Not good enough at this level. We chose our menu and asked some questions about the wine list; again, staff were willing and pleasant, but ultimately did not know their wine list - a lack of somellier or someone in this role is again at odds with the environment.
Sadly another party at the hotel chose to ignore the request to arrive early for their dinner so ours was delayed by 15mins which then appeared to knock on for our whole service whose pace was slow; about 2.5hrs for a tasting menu.
We started on 'snacks' which really should have been the canapes. A black pudding scotch egg was served without cutlery - far too big to be finger food - then a lovely pistachio ice cream and roe concoction and finally haggis bon bons.
We had a crab starter of a very high standard. Followed by a chicken and mushroom dish. The chicken was lovely; the mushroom dry and flavourless adding nothing to the dish. Next up was Hake which was bland and overcooked with a ferociously salty crisp and some other accompaniments which outshone the fish. Lamb followed with exceptional broccoli and potato sides but again, the star of the plate fell short with gristle evident in the dainty cuts of lamb. The pudding was truly excellent - a play on rhubarb and custard. The cheese board offered some quality cheese and a selection of homemade crackers, biscuits, etc.
Breakfast was much as you would expect in terms of menu. Avoid the granola unless you're a fan of being presented with a bowl of nuts which looked like they'd been recycled from the bar the night before. Weirdest thing I've ever encountered at a hotel breakfast. Eggs Benedict was excellent.
We then took advantage of the onsite activities staff and enjoyed a spot of archery by the spectacularly stormy Loch ably supervised by Hugo and the resident Highland cows.
In summary, a lovely setting with willing and pleasant staff in a well-appointed building offering good, but not consistently great, cuisine. Not quite performing with the degree of polish required to be charging at this premium level.

Just missing the mark

We stayed in a family room in the Inn, in the grounds of the big hotel. The room is part of a small terrace and has its own front door and tiny hallway leading up into a nicely laid out room with plenty of light and two sections, the larger with a double bed, and the smaller with bunk beds. Lovely furniture with clean lines, excellent quality bedlinen, soothing colour scheme.  Plenty of storage.

The bathroom is small and a bit dated, but well-laid out. The water comes out of the tap with a brownish tinge but is perfectly safe for washing. I boiled it for tea, anyway.  About the (beautifully presented) tea tray - Tunnock's wafers instead of boring old biscuits. Excellent!

The window at the back of the room looks out onto some friendly-looking highland cattle. Nice rural aspect.

We had dinner and breakfast in the bar/dining room round the corner. The service was friendly, prompt and charming, the atmosphere informal. Nice ales in the small bar. Prices were a little high (a garden salad was very ambitiously priced) but the quality is generally good and there are specials on the board every day.

I really liked the layout and comfort of the accommodation. It's not cheap, but you don't come away feeling you've been over-charged. Given the overheads of doing business in the wilds of Scotland, it's good value overall.
