Booked this through Booking.com and didn’t realise I had been allocated an upstairs room. As I have mobility issues I contacted the property to make sure I had been allocated a ground floor room. After 2 days of trying to contact the owner, both by telephone and booking.com messages, I finally was able to change my booking. I was allocated the ‘Tack Room’. This was ground floor but directly off the main lounge so had to make sure I was not in my undies when my husband came back from walking the dog! The bathroom had a good walk-in shower but the door did not lock. There was another glass double door and windows in the room which faced directly onto the stairs which led up to upstairs room for other residents. The curtains were extremely inadequate and we lacked privacy from other residents. I ended up using medical tape and hair clips on the curtains to cover the whole area, just so no-one could look in. I did mention this to the owner but I notice there have been other similar comments that have obviously not been dealt with.  Mattresses also needed replacing.  As the Tack Room was immediately off the residents lounge area we were bothered by the log burner that was lit every afternoon. The smell of smoke was always present in our room. All in all it was good for 2 nights and probably better in other rooms. Breakfast was nice, although I did have to ask for white bread as none was put out.  I am glad I wasn’t there for longer and won’t be returning.

OK BUT DON’T GET THE ‘TACK ROOM’

This place is so quirky, I loved it. The staff are super helpful and very friendly. In the evening we sat in the cosy communal lounge and met some really nice people, including Christine and Giovanni who both work there. It’s just lovely sitting in this cozy room with the inglenook fireplace, fire blazing drinking wine. My only “wish” would be that you could buy alcohol here, you need to remember to bring some with you. No food available at night but I believe you can order pizza for delivery. We bough ‘picnic food’ and had our main meal during the day. Some of the people we met were returners. 
Great place but a little isolated and we were told no taxis! Knowing this we had a lovely time and I would go back. We had a 4 year old with us and she loved the rocking horse in the communal lounge. I imagine Christmas here would be magical. The breakfast is fantastic, with really good local produce, served beautifully.  Located near to lots of places of interest as long as you have a car. Yes I recommend this special place

Quirky, magical and very comfortable

Such a warm welcome from the hosts for our family party. We loved the quirky rooms and the cosy lounge for getting together. The teenagers liked the shepherds hut. Tasty breakfast too ! Fantastic location for exploring the north east of England.

Great independent inn

Lovely location just south of the main town and if the A1.
Family run with friendly staff throughout.
Quirky and unique accommodation where each room has some history attached to it's previous life.
Breakfast is very good.
Looking forwards to another stay in the future

Totally unique and worth a visit

Stayed for a few days as we had a family wedding there. The place is excellent, a little quirky but Evelyn and her excellent team provide the basics of hotel keeping to the highest standards. Anything you need or want she provides for you. All the team are the same, willing and able to please. Our room was spacious, large comfortable bed, good hot shower, all we needed. Breakfast provided all the choices you could wish for, fruit, cereals, full English, all enjoyed. The lounge is focused on a wood burning stove, needed in Northumberland! A very cosy room, plenty of comfortable sofas to rest awhile. From speaking to others and my own observations. Evelyn was equally as kind and helpful to all. Highly recommended.

Excellent team really look after you!

We had a great nights stay, just outside Alnwick. Check in was quick & straight forward. The Hosts where very friendly. This place is on a working farm & it was cosy. The check-in is only between 4 & 6, so check if going to be outside these hours. Breakfast very fresh & tasty. Would stay again if in the area. 

Night Away

A lovely warm welcome from our hosts we stayed in the west Granary room , it was large with a roll top bath in the en suite room,  the bed was comfortable and we slept well, breakfast was lovely , with a choice of cereals or porridge, yogurt with fruit , toast and pastries and a full English breakfast, there’s an antique shop in the room behind the dining room as it’s a passion of the host who restores furniture in his spare time, all the rooms are very different and unique, there is an inglenook  fireplace with fire in the sitting room to warm you up on chilly nights , I would advise take a towel as I fancied a bath but only found 2hand towels provided, we will definitely stay again

Quaint unique hotel

I was looking for a reasonably priced place to stay near Alnwick for 1 night and came across Alnwick Lodge - from the photos it looked “quirky” but comfortable based upon the photos.

When I arrived the check in was quite slow, the owner seemed quite disorganised and spent time chatting with guests in great detail about the property and it’s history, which would be fine, but not when a number of guests were waiting to check in.

I was allocated the Tack Room which was quite cramped, and was also directly beside the Reception and lounge used by guests so was quite noisy. The TV was very dated and needs replacing, as does the mattress on the bed which was very uncomfortable. The curtains shielding the room from the Reception area didn’t fit the windows properly so the room lacked privacy.

Breakfast was served only between 8 and 9 which meant a lot of guests arrived to eat at the same time, this led to a wait to be served and confusion with the orders. The standard of the cooked breakfast was quite poor.

The standard of the WiFi was very poor so I couldn’t use devices when in my room.

Overall, as I can see a number of reviewers have also commented, I think this property has sold itself on its quirkiness for a long time and neglected to work on the basic comfort / convenience that guests expect as a minimum these days. At their price they are competing with places like Premier Inn and it’s a “no contest” at present.

Sorry, I won’t be returning.

Quirky, but basics have been neglected

Paid £100 for one night. Stayed in the ‘Bull Pen’ room. Dark, dingy and dated. No windows or ventilation except the door you walk in from. Tiny bathroom, inadequate flush on the toilet and the towels were small, old and crusty. A set of nice towels wouldn’t cost much! 
Struggled to sleep due to it being so stuffy due to lack of air. 
Breakfast - a large bowl of fruit salad that looked like it had been in and out of the fridge for a couple of days. Small dishes of yoghurt with what would’ve been pieces of fresh fruit at some point. 
Sat next to the orange juice, yoghurts etc was a fruit bowl with oranges, aged with one having green mould and fruit flies. 
Service chaotic and disorganised. Food was disappointing with one person at our table reordering scrambled egg on toast and asked for it without the toast being burnt!
Crumbs and food remnants on the floor near and around chairs from previous sittings. 
All in all, an expensive and disappointing stay which won’t be repeated. 
The place is passed off as ‘quirky’ but it’s a car crash.

Don’t be fooled by the photos!

What an unexpected discovery staying at the Alnwick Lodge. A quirky and interesting hotel just off the A1. Everyone: staff & guests were super friendly, Evelyn & Peter and Jackie made our stay so special. Sitting by the open fire in the evening was a real treat and so calming and then waking up to a full English breakfast, which was delicious. I don’t know how they do it. Amazing. Highly recommend.
