Food has deteriorated since change of ownership. Tried different offerings on 3 separate occasions hoping they were just having an off day, but our experiences would suggest otherwise. Won’t be giving it a 4th try. The pub itself is lovely and the staff and landlady are lovely, but eating out is something of a luxury in these times so I expect the food to be good.

Sadly food offered has deteriorated

An appalling place to stay. It is unbelievable  that such a shoddy, grubby and pokey room is offered without shame. We stayed in the room for 10 minutes and went home. Self- proclaimed claims of recent refurbishment are clearly misleading. I have stayed in a lot of of hotels/pubs and this is without doubt the worst by a country mile.

Very Poor

We stayed at the George and Dragon between Christmas and New Year 2023. Two couples in two double rooms.

I would first of all like to comment on the pub downstairs. We could not fault it (maybe the early closing time in the evening). The staff were very friendly and the pub had a welcoming feeling. There were lots of beers, wines and spirits to choose from. On our first nights stay we ate in the pub and the food was fabulous - fresh, hot and tasty. Between us we chose the fish and chips, curry and the chilli and I have got to say there were no complaints. Complements to the Chef!

The accommodation however was a different story. We booked through Booking.com with payment on arrival.  I paid our £150 by card for our room and my sister was charged only £130 (for the double room next to ours). When I asked why theirs was cheaper I was told that £130 was the cash price. Had I have know this I would obviously had paid cash. The rooms were quite small and cramped, none of the furniture matched and the carpet and walls were to say the least, grubby with damp marks on the wallpaper. There was a mirror on the wall but it was behind the TV. The bathroom, although you could tell had been cleaned,  was very old and dated with a dirty looking lino and black mould marks in the shower cubicle. 

Another couple of things about the room were the lack of a hairdryer, although on the website it says each room has a hairdryer I had to go (with wet hair) looking for someone to ask. The cleaner did find one for me for which I was grateful. Also the signal on the TV was a problem and we were unable to watch it without it breaking up/buffering. In my sisters room the headboard fell off as she got into bed and she slipped on the toilet seat as it was loose.

I suppose it depends on your standards but we will not be returning, the whole accommodation side needs a complete refurbishment to bring it up to spec.

It was such a shame that we found all these issues as the George and Dragon is a great place to explore Ashbourne and the surrounding areas.



Nice pub but awful accommodation.

Had a lunchtime meal at this friendly pub. The food was excellent and really good value for money. Large portions, certainly didn't need the chips, although they were excellent. I would have no hesitation staying there if staying in Ashbourne. 

Excellent lunchtime meal

We stayed for the night with our dog and were made really welcome, and the room was very comfortable. On the back of that visit, and as we only live 20mins away, we keep coming back for their food and drink. The food is great, and the Sunday roast we had the other week was insane! Loads of lovely food. We’ve also been really impressed by the staff, who have proved themselves to be a lovely bunch, extremely polite and attentive. See you again soon!

Definitely worth a visit

After a long walk at Milldale, we stopped off at The George & Dragon for a late Sunday lunch. We were just in time as they’d very nearly stopped serving food, so ordered two pints of cider, a roast beef dinner & a beetroot wellington. We were then waiting quite a while, so my partner went up to enquire about the order. Unfortunately our order had been misplaced, which they apologised for, & consequently gave us two further pints & a starter free of charge! What a pleasant surprise! Most places would just apologise & try to get your order out quickly, but the landlady at The George went above & beyond to rectify their error & when our mains did arrive, the food was absolutely delicious. I can’t recommend this pub highly enough. Customer service & quality of food were 10 out of 10, even with the delay. Other pubs should take note!

5 star customer service

We visited this place on Thursday afternoon, limited menu as some things weren’t available which is fine as were informed about it! I went to the bar and ordered our drinks and food, we both decided to have the burger. 
Whilst we were sat with our drinks waiting for our food to arrive this miserable, nasty women ( she called herself the manager on duty) appeared behind the bar shouting at one of the staff members, he had clearly made a mistake on the till which she was not happy about and decided to let him and everybody else know about it! She was “fed up of doing pissing voids” was one the things she was shouting! 
After a short while sitting there feeling very uncomfortable the food arrives, looked appealing until I took the top bun off the burger and actually had a look at what I was about to eat. The burger had clearly just been microwaved as the steam coming from it was like I’ve never seen before, it was still cold in the middle and raw in places,  i tried the edge of just the burger and i nearly threw up! I told my friend to stop eating hers as I could see hers looked the same, We ate the chips and the onion rings as they were fine. We did get asked if everything was ok but I did not even look at my burger by that point. Our plates got cleared by the duty manager she asked if everything was ok as she could clearly see we had not eaten the main part of our meal, I informed her that the
Burger was disgusting etc, and she just walked off with our plates, no apology, nothing! We sat there awhile waiting for her to come back with a response to my complaint but never saw her again! Will never return.

Terrible management, disgusting food

3rd time returning customer. So disappointed this time menu changed, portions changed ( very small) for the price,  chewy meat. Just not good at all. They say new owners. They really need to take a look at what they are serving. Beer was ok. Best to avoid

Not Happy - Overpriced - Quality Average Best

We only ate at this hotel - didn't stay overnight but if the service in the bar was anything to go by I would definitely stay if I needed to.  The location overlooking the market square is really convenient.

We had Sunday lunch here and both the food and the service were excellent

We called in for lunch, and the menu looked quite interesting. We ordered haddock and chips, also chilli con carni. The fish was very nice although the batter was hardly chip shop standard. The chilli was more like a stew than chilli, very average. On paying they made a mistake with the bill, and overcharged us, mistakes happen, and a refund given, but no apology. The food is not worth the price charged.
