First of all i slipped up in letting my employer book this hotel for me as its not really clear that it does not do evening meals ...... But I can live with that. I'll except bed and breakfast.

First morning I went to the dining room at around 7.10 am and things were being served .... Fair enough. The second morning I went down around the same time and the dinning room was in darkness. 7.30 am before anyone arrived and they still had to set up. 
Third morning ...... Today .... Waited until 7.50 am and no one showed up at all. I ended going round to the Station Hotel who gladly served me up a breakfast. ( which I of course paid for as I would expect ....... Thanks Station Hotel, much appreciated ). Beds not made, buckets not emptied and towels not changed. The usual cop out sticker about the towels in the shower room, but as they didn't visit the room, they would not have known if I wanted my towels changed or not.

This is very much a budget hotel ( although as I said before, I don't think IT deserves the right to trade as a hotel. There must be some kind of minimum standard that it has to attain too in order to do that ). The rooms are clean and basic with which I have no issue. Electric heaters which ain't the best. A bit dated but it's only somewhere to lay your head so no great shakes.

The big point for me is the breakfast and the fact that nobody could be bothered to turn up and fulfil their obligations. Absolutely shocking.
the area may be busy with travellers and workmen and they may get away with this kind of operation for a while but that won't always be the case. I hope they don't intend building a nice little retirement fund out of this venture ....... It won't happen.

Just not impressed

Should not be allowed to call itself a hotel

Reception was fine and Portsoy is lovely but the Boyne is certainly not the best here.
My breakfast arrangements were necessarily adapted (and revised) to the majority of those others staying and working from the hotel. 06:30 breakfast is fine if you want an early start and breakfast is good. A guest "at leisure" and hoping for a lie in and a relaxed breakfast might be disappointed? My single room was tired, basic, adequate but no more, however everything worked.
Fire doors to every room with poorly adjusted door closers and inconsiderate guests result in slamming doors from 06:00 in the morning until 23:30 at night. 
Can't recommend The Boyne unless you are a flexible tradesperson (or team of trades people) that needs an early start and a good breakfast?

Busy with lots of trades people - of which I am one but....

I don’t know where to start!

£75 per night for what is basically a hostel with cooked breakfast is FAR too much.

The rooms are small.
The shower is too bloody small.
The TV is ridiculously small.

The wash-hand basin is in the bedroom as there is no room in the small shower room with the top bloody small shower.
There was no shampoo or conditioner sachets but plenty of shower gel. Not ideal when one discovers this whilst in the too bloody small shower.

The windows are either almost impossible to open or the whole top section drops suddenly and scares the crap out of you when you think it’s going to smash.
(I couldn’t physically open either window but my partner managed after a real struggle.)
You can’t have a window open, just a wee bit, unless you find something to jam it with.
Our friends used a loo roll but we soon discovered that we should have a permanent breeze due to the fact that one of the wee panes was 
actually cut too small. See photos if you don’t believe me.

There is no food served apart from breakfast.
None.
You can bring in takeaway to eat in the breakfast room - maybe that explains the super sticky table at breakfast on the 2nd morning.
There is only one sugar bowl in the hotel.

The bar downstairs was occupied by young metal freaks on the Saturday and we were therefore ‘treated’ to their taste in ‘music’ for hours. Thank gawd for earplugs........

The teabags on the tray aren’t in any packaging. The UHT milk left floaters on the surface of my tea.

The WiFi signal is terrible - I gave up trying. 

Ian behind the bar and the breakfast server/housekeeper were very friendly.
Our bed and room were clean.
These are THE only positives in a weekend of many negatives.

There is more but by now, you should have made your decision and continued with your search.

Did I book the local hostel by mistake?

This was my second visit in about 3 weeks. The hotel is very clean but is tired and could do with coming out of the last century which is why I rated it average. The staff are young and seem to lack a bit in experience but they do their job efficiently enough. Since my last visit the cost of staying jumped up £22 per night which  seemed a bit excessive but is possibly due to them putting me in a room with a double bed but the last room I stayed in seemed empty. My one niggle was I asked for my breakfast at 7,30 and no one came to the dining room until almost 8,00 to take my order on my last day. However I would recommend this hotel and would certainly stay here again

A place to stay in Portsoy

Rooms were a little small, but very clean with all the usual commodities. Well what do you want a room for? Not a dance, but the bed was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Sadly, no evening meals when we went, but do meals in full season. Very reasonably priced and worth the money.
