Finally returned to actually stay at our wedding venue and delighted by the accommodation (huge room, gorgeous bed) and delicious meal in the restaurant. Beautiful grounds - lake to walk around.  Battle Town very close.

Cosy for a winter break

Loved the house and grounds. Bed was very clean and comfortable, room was warm snd cosy, even though we visited on one of the coldest nights. Food was delicious, both evening and breakfast. Staff couldn't do enough for us, lovely, cheerful and friendly. Only marked down the room because it was dark in there and the bathroom wasn't spotless. It was perfect for us and we may well be back with our dogs now that we know they're so dog friendly! 

Planning a return visit

We got married at the PowderMills in October, and had a mixed experience. It is an absolutely lovely setting, with amazing rooms and the food is fantastic.
We found that communication between ourselves and the hotel was not as prompt or clear as we would have liked, and this led to a number of concerns throughout the evening.
There was  an incident in the middle of our wedding reception which, although was out of the hotel's control and understandably was upsetting for the team, was not dealt with in the manner we would have liked. As a result of this incident, almost half of our wedding guests were not able to have their main course. Although advertised as dog-friendly and discussed throughout the whole planning process, we were told that our family dogs would not be allowed to join us for our wedding breakfast, which was a shock and upsetting as this was previously promised. There were a number of other miscommunications which impacted the day, and our experiences staying at and holding our wedding at the PowderMills.
We have reached out to the hotel to discuss our concerns however have not received any response. We then prompted on the Facebook post celebrating our marriage--a lovely touch which we were grateful for--but still have not received a response.

Lovely setting, disappointing experience

We came here to a function, not the first time. The staff were friendly. The meal started well with a lovely starter. Unfortunately it was downhill from there. A professional kitchen should be able to cook fish - mine was only just not overcooked and if it was too difficult for the kitchen it should not have been offered. My advice would be to buy in the brownies. The vegan brownie was like dry cake, not squishy like a brownie should be. I make vegan chocolate cake and it is very moist; I am not a professional

Great starter

Lovely luxurious country hotel with original features. My bedroom was spacious & clean with a comfortable bed & there were several lounges to relax in. The staff were polite, accommodating &efficient. Breakfast was very tasty & freshly cooked.I would have loved to have explored the grounds but it was dark when I arrived & left. This hotel is well worth a visit

Well Worth A Visit

Many have suggested we try The Powder Mills. This was our first visit and it will be our last. 

It has a wonderful secluded setting; the approach to the old buildings nestling in woods and ponds is glorious. We were greeted with the aroma of wood smoke, always a good sign in our book. But these first impressions were completely misleading. It was all downhill from there.

We had booked but the hotel was like the Marie Celeste - no welcome at all, in fact no staff were to be seen. After standing about for several minutes I found someone working on their computer in a back office and we were eventually shown to a table. Unfortunately there was a photo shoot in progress occupying all the best tables beside the window. Why was this allowed at lunch time one might ask? That said it was empty, just three other diners in the pleasant if chilly dining room. Staff in a neighbouring room began dragging furniture around on the tiled floor making an appalling din. We really should have left at that point. 

The menu was reasonable but the food terrible. The scallops had no flavour (3 for £15) so they were either not fresh or more likely frozen. My wife had the sea bass - dry and over cooked. I had duck breast so over cooked it was like grey leather. I did tell the waiter with blue nail varnish twice. I suspect it had been pre cooked and warmed, and dried, in an oven. So six scallops, a dry fish, two small pieces of over cooked duck, two medium glasses of Merlot all for £109. 

With decent management and higher standards this could be very good. Clearly it makes its money from weddings so mass catering is more its forte it would seem. Fortunately East Sussex has a wonderful choice of better places to eat.

Very disappointing

Superb stay here .. very friendly and helpful staff .. we ate in the restaurant .. the food was excellent albeit quite pricey especially if you add on the 12.5 percent service charge .. ouch ! (who does that go to btw?) 

The peacocks were an added attraction and very tame

Just spent two days here on a very reasonable Travelzoo deal. It's a lovely hotel, in beautiful grounds and the staff are welcoming and helpful. Our room was large, warm and spotlessly clean. The bed was very comfy. It's a luxurious hotel, that has an air of calm. We had a high tea as part of our deal, which was plentiful, fresh and beautifully presented. Breakfast each morning was one of the best we have ever had. Really, this hotel deserves six stars from us. Would recommend the walk around the lake and the footpath into Battle, but take your wellies.

Best Hotel break ever

Excellent: cleanliness and staff professionalism and friendliness.
Good: breakfast and location
Not so good: no mobile reception in the bedroom (EE and 02). Was ok in the breakfast room.
We were in room 15 , small room .We could hear next doors TV ( and not just a murmur, we could hear voices clearly.) Then woken next morning before 5.30 am by their dog barking.
Other more expensive rooms are probably better sound wise. 
Very soft springy beds.
Poor lighting.
Cold in public areas/poor seating

Travelzoo offer

A beautiful hotel full of charm in a stunning location. The service was very good, staff excellent, very friendly and helpful.  Breakfast and afternoon tea were really lovely. 

Our bedroom and en-suite were fairly small but very adequate and bed was extremely comfortable.  It was bitterly cold when we visited and our bedroom and the numerous rooms where you could sit were a little cooler than I would have liked. Beautiful grounds with lakes that you can walk around.  We would definitely return.  

Would really like to see latte and cappuccino’s on offer together with snack and drink menu’s positioned in the reception rooms.
