A lovely little hotel close to Rye. We stayed in one of the round rooms and the bed was one of the most comfortable we've ever slept in. The bath in the room behind the screen might not be to everyone's taste but I liked it - if anything I'd move the TV so I could watch it in the bath! The DVDs available are a nice touch . The room was lovely and clean. We didn't eat there in the evening but had a few drinks in the bar and soon got in a conversation with one of the locals and it has a nice atmosphere The breakfast was really nice - a good size , freshly cooked to order and good quality. The staff were really friendly. I'd definitely recommend this hotel. 

A lovely, friendly hotel and really good night's sleep.

We stayed for four nights in the garden room.  It has its own small garden which was brilliant for our elderly dog. The room was large with separate shower and separate toilet. The room was clean and airy.  Breakfasts were of a good quality although not massive but enough for us.  Loved the pub in the evening. Our dog was made welcome and enjoyed all the fussing he got. Staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful.

An enjoyable stay

I think the point of reviews is so you know what to expect . So - 

The hotel is fine, it has the feel and decor of a tidy pub. its clean, well maintained and the man at the front desk was friendly and helpful. The room itself was good. It was also clean, had tea, coffee and biscuits. It is on the pricier side, but I think if you don't mind noise, a mattress that probably needs turning -  then this will be fine. 

But for us, the main problem was noise and overpriced food- the walls and doors are paper thin, we could hear next doors TV very loudly for hours. Folks going to the toilet (and I don't mean the flush) through the wall.

The evening meal in the restaurant - the restaurant itself was also well maintained and attractive, but £30 for two small microwave shepherds pies, with some frozen veggies on the side was crazy expensive,  but the staff were polite and prompt. 

The complimentary breakfast was a nice, and not just toast and jam. The waitress at breakfast was doing all of the work more or less alone, was very polite, and she had amazing flamboyant glitter make up, which my make up artist partner thought was wonderful and wanted her to know! 

Clean, well maintained, but noisy.

Stayed here for two nights as our base for visiting a nearby winery. We were greeted by Andy (I think?) who was doing a great job keeping the plates spinning, and our first reaction was just how well run and friendly this hotel is. We stayed in an outside room, and it was spotless. On the first night we ate in the hotel restaurant, and the food was not only outstanding, but there was plenty of it. At breakfast a gentleman introduced himself as the co-owner, a nice touch. Overall, the accommodation, food and staff were faultless. It's 200 miles from home, so we are unlikely to be 'just passing' anytime soon, but when we next visit East Sussex, this is where we'll stay...

Faultless...

Beautiful building in a great location with excellent bar and candle lit dining areas. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay which made it feel like a special occasion. Our room (room 5) was very clean but a bit of a letdown due to the smell of damp which was probably due to no window or extractor in the bathroom.  The shower over the bath was poor and the mattress on the bed should be replaced. Apart from these issues we enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was very good and if eating in the restaurant I would recommend the steak pie and cheesecake of the week. We would definitely return but would request a different room.

Beautiful building in a great location

The good bits,   lovely friendly bar staff and the bedroom.  whilst very simply furnished was clean and warm.

Not so good the food and, to be  honest the prices seemed more suited to a much higher quality offering. Dinner was adequate at best,  didn't seem  like good quality ingredients and  overall we found it very disappointing.  Breakfast similar and not even a decent coffee. 

Average 

Today, we visited The Playden Oasts for a drink. The lager and beer were fantastic, and the young lady behind the bar was very friendly and helpful. Such a lovely place. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to sampling their tempting menu soon.

Lovely place

An honest review.  This hotel is situated very close to Rye with great views from our side room. We were shown to our room which smelt quite badly of damp. There were a few cobwebs and the room needs a lick of paint but apart from that the room was clean.  Can I say for the price of the room we found it wasn’t big enough for two.  Now for the positives.  The heating system in the room is excellent and the water is very hot. Lots of tea and coffee and biscuits.  A bottle of water each and some toiletries.  The towels are plentiful and very fluffy.  The shower was not good with no power but did the job ! The bed is awful and all others in our party agreed that theirs were the same. Very lumpy so didn’t sleep well at all.  Lots of space for luggage and clothes. Excellent wi fi. Breakfast I would say was average but lots of it.  Good service from waitress and chap that checked us in.  I would stay again if there mattress was better.

First try and we will definitely be back. Delicious food and great service. Good quality ingredients, lean meat and good choice. Comfortable and traditional surroundings and a bit quirky with lots of history. Really good choice for couples and families. Thank you.

Fabulous Sunday Roast

Nice little hotel on outskirts of Rye. About a 5 min drive to Rye and 15min drive to Camber sands. 
Pet friendly. Room comfortable and we’re placed in one of the outer rooms with a little garden. 
Excellent service with attentive staff. Had a lovely evening meal.
