Outstanding ! The staff are brilliant and made us more than welcome, 8 of us had a 2 night stay and we have no complaints whatsoever, fantastic food (hake on a bed of risotto) Wow, Good selection of beer's and wine's with Jail Ale being my favourite.
Would we ever return for another weekend with our friends ? Well a simple Yes is the answer.

Great place to stay.

Stayed one night with my partner and wish we could have stayed longer.
Manager and staff all really friendly, relaxed polite and helpful.  Running a brilliantly organised, clean and very comfortable inn. 
We had an evening meal which was delicious  as was our breakfast the following morning. 
Honestly we could not think of a single negative and will definitely stay here again. Loved it!

This is an amazing place where ancient things and modern things are intertwined! 🥰 Hotel, bar and restaurant under a thatched roof, very cozy and well-kept garden. Large parking! Huge portions in the restaurant, I ordered a starter and didn’t regret it 😂 There was still a little  place for dessert)) 🧁 each room is unique, each room has an individual design. If you pass through these places, be sure to stop here! 🙌

Fantastic food. A well presented food restaurant, plenty of choice not just chips with everything, great attention to detail with service from the bar and beautiful garden with areas for everyone. And yes accepting of dogs. Martha (the cockerpoo puppy) enjoyed the garden.

Food

A group of seven walking friends recently stayed at this delightful, partly 13th century, thatched country inn for a week.

First of all, the rooms. They were clean, quiet and well-designed, with comfortable beds, and with mattresses that felt like they were new (maybe they were). Each room also had a well-functioning shower (and some rooms had baths too), plenty of storage space, and replenished tea and coffee-making facilities – including the good-quality biscuits – every day. One friend said that it was the best hotel shower he’d ever had. The residents’ lounge was also really comfortable and handy for a group like ours. 

And then there’s the food. The breakfast menu was the most extensive I’ve ever seen in a hotel, with options of the usual full (veggie) English breakfast, eggs, cereals, yoghurts etc. but also omelette, pancake, porridge with fresh berry compote, fresh fruit salad and more. Every day the chefs prepared for each of us a most delicious sandwich, filled with a filling of our choice, taken from a wide range of options. One friend (not the same one who loved the shower!) said it was the best sandwiches they’d ever had. After the first day the staff even asked us what filling we would like in order to ensure we would each get a variety throughout the week. Initially we booked for dinner for just the first two nights, but the food was so good that we ate there all seven nights of our stay. Between us we tried practically everything on the main and dessert menu and there was not one occasion when anyone was disappointed with the food they were served. The hotel also serves a range of high-quality wines, beers/ales and a variety of gins. It was lovely too to have a little section of the room with a large table just for ourselves for dinner.

Whether you are a walker or a tourist visiting the local sights, the location is superb. For walkers and runners, there is a path directly from the hotel car park down to the southwest coastal path. From there the walks in either direction are absolutely stunning. Usually we did a circular walk, sometimes returning partly inland. Other times we did a linear walk and caught the bus back. The bus stops directly outside the hotel. Clovelly, Appledore, Westward Ho!, Instow, Hartland and Hartland Quay as well as other beautiful places are all just a walk/short drive away.

But what stands out the most is the staff. Every single member of staff – the managers/owners James and Becca, front-of-house bar/waiting staff Anna, Olivia, Millie and Sarah, chefs Dave and Will, and housekeepers Sharon and Jan – was approachable, helpful, friendly and attentive. And every single one of them was very well trained, which led to extremely efficient customer service and a consistently pleasant customer experience, from our first contact with the hotel to make the initial enquiry and then booking to the personalised service throughout our stay to the fact that they got all of our bills correct at the end. The latter is no mean feat when seven people have stayed in four different rooms for a week and ordered different meals and drinks to be added to the final bill throughout that week. All the staff were incredibly accommodating, often going above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that our stay exceeded our expectations. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone.

We go away on holiday with each other once a year and for weekends away twice a year, almost always staying in country inns. Our stay at the Hoops Inn really has stood out to us all, with not one of us being able to fault anything about our weeklong stay. It is very rare that I have the opportunity to write such a glowing review or to state that several aspects of our stay are the ‘best ever’. Well done to all of the team – your hard work, motivation and dedication to the hospitality sector and your customers really are second to none. We would definitely love to come back to this extremely well-run, beautiful, welcoming hotel. Highly recommended. 


Outstanding - it really is difficult to fault this hotel!

We stayed at The Hoops for three nights whilst walking The South West Coastal Path.  It could not have been better suited to our requirements:  The rooms were simply furnished but well equipped and perfectly adequate for our needs, the bar was a great rallying point and the restaurant was nothing less than excellent - dinner and breakfast alike.  Perhaps the best thing about the package 'though, was the quality of every single member of staff at every point of contact.  The friendliness and service focus was extreme.  The Coastpath is easily reached through a gap in the car park fence ad a quick saunter across two fields.  Really felt we were in walkers' heaven.  Dog friendly too.  There's no excuse not to pack your bags and head for The Hoops now.

Great stay

Amazing hotel, lovely quirky building, dinner was lovely, as was the breakfast. Enjoyed sitting in the gardens. A special thankyou to the staff, one young man in particular was there until late last night, then was serving us breakfast the next morning- always pleasant and courteous, no matter how busy he was. Would love to return, and possibly stay a bit longer next time. Close to some lovely beaches

Great location, gorgeous hotel, great staff!!!

There were 2 adults & 4 kids on our visit. The staff were very welcoming and we were quickly shown to our table. The interior is very quirky, old and cosy. 3 kids ordered burger and chips, which was very tasty and a good size. The burgers looked homemade. The other kid ordered pizza and hitch was very disappointing. It was the size of a saucer and very thin. It might have been ok for a 2 year old, but definitely not enough for an older child. There wasn’t even any chips or anything with it. The adult meals were tasty and there were vegan options available. But it was not the menu we had seen on the restaurants website, so we were slightly disappointed about that. The prices are reasonable and we enjoyed our visit. The outside area is very relaxing and peaceful. There was plenty of parking and we would definitely visit again.

Nice place

Lovely old inn.  Basic rooms but clean and functional.  Super gardens and some lovely memorabilia of the inn in bygone days.  Good food.   Most enjoyable. Plentiful parking and convenient for Clovelly.
