We booked Zebra Lodge or Vicarage Lodge as it’s now known, because it was the cheapest we could find that was relatively central and had enough capacity for a large group. We went with some trepidation because of the poor reviews however we needn’t have worried. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and gave lots of good advice even booking us taxis’s and advising us on food delivery and where the nearest shops are. The rooms are basic and the building is in places a little tired however the beds are comfortable the bedding clean and the room itself was clean. I had a single and it had a wardrobe, chest of drawers and a working tv. A lot reviews mention the blinds having gaps but mine when closed was perfect and the heating was on all night which made it nice and warm. The shared kitchen had a kettle and tea and coffee etc as well as fresh milk and a fridge so you could pop food in if you wanted. The bathroom was clean although a little tired but fine to use and the staff who came in early went round and replaced loo rolls and all in all I was really impressed for the price paid. Free WiFi is also a bonus. It’s not a big chain hotel so if you go in expecting the Hilton then yes you will be disappointed but if you want a clean, basic room with free parking outside and easy access to the city centre then it’s spot on. The owner who is friendly and welcoming said they have just taken over and are in the process of improving and upgrading everything so it can only get better and I would happily stay again because it was excellent value for money. 

Basic clean accommodation  

Room was clean and how it looks on picture, bathroom was also seemingly clean and there is a kitchen provided. Free wifi is provided as well as an uber code to enable you to get a free taxi into town. Only negatives would be blinds do not fit properly so window had lots of gaps in it, which made me feel uncomfortable getting changed, bathroom had no soap, and parking has no security cameras which is a bit unnerving due to the area it is situated. There was also no staff onsite which is a slight concern as some of our 'neighbours' in the room over were a bit, confrontational shall we say. Overall would reccomend as was what would be expected for the price paid.

What you see is what you get

Stayed here as part of a group booking for a cheap place to stay over night at the time of year and we weren’t going to be in the rooms long. 

The place is very basic and very run down. The room itself was okay, the beds were comfy but a large patch where there had either been a leak or botched repair job. I’m sure if the lighting was better I’d have been more horrified. 

The shared bathroom on the basement floor we were on was fitted with a PVC back door, the frosted glass on the window was only fitted halfway so next door could see you showering. And to top it off, there was not hot water and can confirm it was the coldest shower I’ve ever had. Opposite the bathroom was a “storage area”. Which was all the maintenance tools/equipment hidden behind an old hung bedsheet. 

Felt on edge for the majority of my stay and it was clear some people are clearly living there long term as a bedsit. I’m just glad I only spent roughly 9hrs in the room.

Only giving it 2 stars because it cost £20, and slept well. The latter might be because I’d had 6 pints. 

Cheap, and in no way cheerful 

If you are just looking for a bed in a private room fairly close to Birmingham centre (just under 10 minutes walk to the tram and then about the same to get to New Street Station) then this will do. Don't expect too much. The rooms are warm and the beds comfortable, but that's about it. It's not a hotel. There are no staff on site and no contact with the staff after 10pm for any reason whatsoever (the phone is turned off). There are access codes for all the rooms, which is secure. There is no safe or secure lockers in the rooms however. Make sure you close your door, they don't slam shut behind you. 

The shared kitchen is basic, perhaps bring your own cutlery and plates as there are extremely limited supplies of both. While the rooms are a good size, the walls are not that thick and I could hear snoring from the upper floor, as well as every little thing the people on my floor were doing. Bring some earplugs! Not a great deal of outside noise though.

The bathroom and shower are fine, although I am not sure when they are cleaned. They weren't dirty during my stay, but didn't feel totally clean either. The room and kitchens were clean though. The TV had an indoor antenna so many channels didn't work properly. The wifi, while strong, was a bit hit and miss, mainly miss. It would drop frequently and most of the time I was sat with a "limited connection" meaning no internet. That was quite annoying. When it did work, the signal was strong and fast, however.

All in all if I needed to stay in Birmingham again I would be inclined to find somewhere else which is a bit cheaper. For the price I paid, I felt this was a little steep.

Not a hotel, not a hostel, just a bedroom

Myself and my partner booked this hotel as it was the only one available at the time of our stay that wasn't too far from the town centre and it was only needed for one night for a birthday get away.

We arrived in Birmingham early so i contacted the hotel to see if we were able to check in early. The person on the phone was very rude, however did allow us to book in a little before the actual check in time which i was greatfull for. 

As we arrived close to the premises there was alot of rubbish outside but due to the bin strikes i know this can not be helped. However big bags were piled really high outside the property and the smell was awful! As we got out of the taxi a large group of men were standing outside the hotel smoking drugs and being loud and aggressive. As we tried to enter the property they began to heckle us and we began feeling very uncomfortable so moved away from the property. We later found out that some of these men were staff. 

The area of the hotel was unpleasant, the hotel was just a house in the street which looked very unclean and the altercation outside prevented our stay there. The potential use of drugs on the property is disgusting and me and my partner felt very uncomfortable staying there, let alone leaving our things. 

We finally got into town and tried for several hours to find a new hotel but everything was fully booked or over £150 per night and we had no choice but to get the 2 and a half hour coach ride again back home. 

This had absolutely ruined my birthday plans as we were unable to attend the show that we had booked that evening which we have had organised for some time. I am so disappointed in the hotel and would advise anyone to STAY AWAY. I would hate to think of anyone, especially families with children stoping at this hotel. It should not be open.

Awful!

A big group of us booked this accommodation for one night. Some of the group visited it earlier in the day before we all met up & reported how awful it was. Consequent three of us decided not to stay there & go home instead. I did not stay there but have seen photos. I'm happy with my decision! 
The area was apparently not particularly appealing, other people were living in the accommodation (it was like a hostel), there was no communal lounge & a very small kitchen. I don't think the decor was up to much either. We thought we were having the house to ourselves so it was all a great disappointment. I'm sure the group members who did stay overnight may well add other reviews. It was such a shame as all the indications were that it was going to be great😟.
