Badly maintained, dirty hotel has no heating the hot water sells a count of goats the pool of the bathroom topped the picaporte inside the tiny room, at 1 a.m. jump the fire alarm all running in mid-November with a cold death and finally nothing, a horrible experience located in a very deserted and ugly area I do not recommend even to spend a night and less to go with a baby.

A bad experience.

This hotel was booked for an overnight stay in Birmingham for a business trip. I prefer an old hotel, so was delighted with the outside facade, and the fact that many of the old features remain. Inside however the welcome was cold, with the most miserable desk staff I have ever come across sat at a plain and unwelcoming reception area. I really felt as though I was entering a detention centre. Unsmiling, the receptionist directed me to my room, and I made my way through the huge hotel, noticing that the further I walked  (it is a huge place) the dirtier it became. Carpets were beyond filthy, ceiling tiles were broken and stained, and in places mould and damp grew on the corridor walls.

On entering my room, although it seemed freshly cleaned, the smell of damp was overwhelming, and as I moved back the curtain I discovered the wall black with damp, around the window and bed. I touched this and it was wet. 

I immediately went back down to the still unsmiling receptionist and asked for a change of room, showing her the black mould still on my fingertips. Horrified, she asked me how I could could touch my phone after touching the mould, to which I replied that she was expecting me to sleep in the room. I was immediately given keys to the room next door, which on inspection was worse than the first. Deciding that I was not going to spend the night there, I called around a couple of local hotels until I found a room available. I recieved a full refund from the Rowton before I left. 

On a side note, the taxi driver who picked me up from the Rowton to take me to the next hotel told me that the hotel was used to house refugees, and he himself had stayed there when he had arrived in the UK. It shocked me to think that people who had no choice of where to stay were housed in conditions such as this.

I turned up and wanted to sleep in the car. Staff was rude you know a smile costs nothing

Awful

My daughter recently stayed at this hotel for 1 night prior to an audition. Here are her thoughts:
The Rowton Hotel is a lovely hotel done up nicely. I stayed in a single bed room which was extremely small but ideal. The bathroom was very modern and the whole room was clean and tidy. Facilities included a tea tray, a tv, free wifi and toiletries. My stay suited my needs of having a bed for the night however I did encounter some problems. Upon checking in, I received my card key, room number and was given the wifi password. I was told where the lifts were however I prefer stairs so went up to my floor. Unfortunately my card key was totally unresponsive to my door and was not letting me in. The lady on the desk was very friendly and helpful. She said there was a problem with that room so she moved me next door (a bit inconsiderate giving me a room knowing there is a fault with it). When in my room, I had trouble turning on the lights. I didn't realise you have to put your card key in a pocket on the wall to power the electrics. There was a sign on it however with lighting limited it was difficult to see. After doing this, I tried the light switches however they weren't doing anything. I tried turning on the desk lamp but the bulb was broken. Eventually, I put the wall lamp on and discovered the reason the switches weren't working was because there was no ceiling light! This was not a problem to me as the wall lamp was quite bright; the switches were just confusing. It was fairly cold at night but I couldn't get the heater to work. I would have liked a blanket to be available. Luckily the duvet was thick so I had a cosy and warm sleep. 
The hotel itself is in a great location, away from the city centre and busy roads. There was no outside noise however I could hear people talking clearly in the corridor at night! The walls between rooms were quite thick; again, I couldn't  hear any noise from the adjacent rooms however it wasn't very busy so I'm not sure whether there were guests in there. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at The Rowton and would stay again. It isn't the perfect hotel or the most luxurious but is worth a cheap kip.

A cheap and pleasant 1 night stay.

The room I was In was dirty. Splash marks up the walls around the bed. Carpet filthy. The toilet was just as bad with finger marks and dirty splashes all over the paint work. No heating, the little electric heater full to apart, so it was freezing. Mattress springs were prominent and uncomfortable. The photos on the website are misleading.

Lovely welcoming reception staff and then it goes downhill . 
Price was reasonable but the cleanliness of the room wasn’t great with mould growing round the windows - I know it is a listed building with old fashioned sash windows but still very off putting . The electrics seemed a bit dodgy with the bathroom light not switching off once turned on . Very noisy fire door in the corridor outside room so woke up every time someone came through it and then to put the top hat - the fire alarm went off at 0645 !! So left at 0700 in search of breakfast as was wide awake !! 
Shame as it looks lovely on first impressions . Very disappointed ! 

Lovely staff mediocre accommodation 

Oh dear where to start,
On arrival at reception we should have taken the hint as people were asking to change rooms then but stuck with it BIG mistake.
Got to room which was freezing cold wind rattling the old sash windows which i wedged to stop the rattle.
Went down to the bar (had to wait for someone to come)  the barman was the only good thing about the place really helpful actually felt a bit sorry for him working there. He apologised as there was no coffee or even lager to offer.
Managed to get a half decent nights sleep until the fire alarms started at 6.30 on a Sunday morning when the fire alarm went off for the first time. After leaving our room to find no staff around to assist, we returned to our room for what could be an hour before the alarms went off again for longer which intermittently stopped and started (had rats chewed through the wiring?) . As we had already packed ready this time (where we found half eaten chocolate digestives from what ever decade behind the bedside cabinet) we left the room completely with all of our belongings. As we walked down the stairs to the fire exit we came across a kitchen staff member that didn't even realise the alarms were going off and seemed rather unconcerned by the whole thing. There is also a lot of damp and mould everywhere.
May I suggest that you upgrade your soft upgrade to nuclear!

Fawlty Towers meets Walking Dead

Only stayed for 1 night but would definitely stay again. The building is beautiful and staff are very helpful. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Not a luxury hotel, but overall, really good value for money!

Would stay again!!

A very good, budget hotel. When I visited I found everyone very friendly and welcoming.  Bedrooms are basic but more than adequate and comfortable. I would certainly return to The Rowton Hotel. I certainly appreciate the price as I was only in the hotel to sleep and certainly didn't require all the "extras" that larger hotels might offer and never used.!

Nice for the Price

A wonderful historic building and great staff.I enjoyed the atmosphere of the place, the food was good also. The bar and restaurant which has recently been refurbished is very smart. The building itself is a marvel!
