We have stayed at many “rooms above pubs” establishments throughout the UK, and generally they are good. Sadly however The Ashville seems to be another case of a publican playing at being a hotelier. Everything done as an afterthought and on the cheap. 

The area

Whilst we expected to be in a “residential” area, we did not expect to be sandwiched between two high rise council housing blocks. The area was tatty, FULL of discarded rubbish all over the streets and pavements, scrawled graffiti on buildings and overflowing bins. 

The “hotel”

5 rooms on 1 floor above a pub. On arrival we entered the pub and told the barmaid we had a reservation for 3 nights. She walked us out of pub, around side and upstairs to Room 2. No info about the area, and told to only use the inside door to the pub for breakfast. At all other times we were to enter pub from outside. 
Room disappointing. Totally overlooked by one of the council high rises. Not a pleasant outlook. Bed tiny. This is a SMALL double. Footboard at bottom of bed. My husband is 5 feet 10 and he couldn’t stretch out. Pillows lumpy. 
Only one (scratched and marked) bedside table. 
Tea and coffee tray the most pathetic and bare I’ve ever encountered. 3 open teabags clearly taken from a multi-pack. Not even sealed to preserve freshness. No choice of teas whatsoever. No fruit tea. No hot chocolate. Just 4 sachets of Nescafé. No decaf option. NO MILK ?? I had to go to Aldi and buy a carton of UHT milk (as no fridge in room so couldn’t keep fresh milk). Just a microwave. Why ? 
No biscuits despite photos of room showing them. Nothing. No bottled water. Even Premier Inn and Travelodge provide a selection of drinks, milk sachets and biscuits. 
Room photos entirely misleading. They show a kitchenette. Where ? 
Bathroom freezing and tiny. Barely any room to move. Heated towel rail never on. 
Curtains hanging off rail so badly I had to grab a chair from hallway to push against them to try and close them. 
Staff member ironing pillowcases in hallway ! Surely she could do this behind the scenes ? 
Hole in wall in bathroom and marks on walls. Very rude sign in bathroom referring to “misuse of shower”. Is that really necessary ? Just politely ask guests to close shower door. 
VERY noisy. People from pub standing outside smoking and shouting. Walls like paper. You can hear guests in next room snoring and using toilet. There doesn’t appear to be a door in the whole place that doesn’t slam shut. The attentions of a carpenter wouldn’t go amiss. Front door, door to stairs and every one of the guest room doors bangs every time they are opened or closed. 
No leaflets in room about the area. No info about the hotel. Absolutely nothing. There is a list of breakfast items and info on check out time and WIFI password (which was incorrect) under piece of plastic on table in hallway. Why not in rooms ? Why not on tables in pub for breakfast ? You had to memorise the breakfast items or take photo. Totally odd. We have never stayed anywhere that doesn’t have guest info booklet in room and some tourist info about the local area

The pub

We did as instructed and walked outside and into the pub after unpacking. It looked open. It was 4pm. There were people eating inside, staff standing around and someone repairing a fridge. A man sat at a bar with a laptop open. “Can I help you” he said. We asked if we could get a drink. “We are not open yet as you can see” he said. HOW RUDE 😡 No further advice was forthcoming on where we could go to get a drink. I had to ask. He knew we were guests at The Ashville. I have no idea if he was the owner. He didn’t bother introducing himself or welcoming us nor telling us anything about the area and how to get round. 
We had booked for dinner on the Fri evening. The food was ok. We were asked to move to the bar after we had finished to release the table which was fine. However, when my husband asked to pay for our bar drinks a man with glasses behind the bar very rudely said “when I’ve finished what I’m doing”. This same staff member served us breakfast the following 2 mornings. 

Breakfast

I have no idea why people rate the breakfasts so highly. Very underwhelming. Stringy fatty streaky bacon, undercooked sausage, cheap toast clearly taken from a supermarket pre-packed loaf. My husband ordered the bacon sandwich. It was toast not bread, and again cheap bread. Where was the fresh bread or sourdough ? And why toasted ? It was filled with fatty slices of bacon. He left half of it. No pots of coffee or tea, just cups. So you had to ask if you wanted more than one cup. No cornflakes or bran flakes. Just muesli and coco pops. Yoghurts on Sat but nothing on Sun. Pastries were large but looked far better than they tasted. I ordered scrambled eggs on Sun. They were the most tasteless and bland eggs ever. Not a knob of butter or splash of cream had gone anywhere near them. Watery and grey. My (cheap) toast was dry and no butter provided. No salt and pepper on tables. The tables weren’t even laid out. This was breakfast on the cheap as an after thought. When booking on booking.com I was told the pub wasn’t open on Mondays so no breakfast was served and that was reflected in price. However, when we left we saw people eating breakfast. Why weren’t we told this ?  The rude man from Fri eve with glasses was serving - when you could find him. There was another man sitting in the corner on Sat morning on a laptop. Same man as rudely told us on Fri late afternoon pub was shut “as we could see” ? Whether he was the owner or not we have no idea. He seemed more interested in his laptop than in any guests. 

This place is not cheap so we expected far better. It needs a lot more attention to detail and friendlier staff service.

Not impressed

Small but well equipped room. Free permit parking right outside the hotel and just outside the clean air zone. Excellent breakfast served within the restaurant of the downstairs pub. The pub has a steakhouse restaurant with an extensive menu. Walking distance from various bars and restaurants 

Ideal for town centre 

You won’t find a better host! We have had an absolute brilliant stay, on arrival we were greeted by Sandor the owner, he is so funny and so kind, he definitely made our stay a happy one. 
The rooms we had were great, enough room, clean and the bed was really comfy. Modern Air con in the rooms too, we were so happy for this as it’s been hot. 
The breakfast was brilliant, 9-10am and a full English or you can help yourself to croissants/pastries, yoghurts, cereals etc. Fresh orange juice and milk available in jugs. 
The restaurant you eat in is really lovely, we are there for lunch too which was brilliant, great food, lovely service and huge portion sizes too. 
We walked to a few places from here, SS Great Britain etc, it’s all pretty flat and easy to walk to. The Ashville is located in a perfect location, we didn’t hear any outside noise as it’s located in a quiet area and we were given a parking permit for free parking. We will definitely stay here again for any Bristol visits.

Brilliant host, accommodation & food

Excellent place to stay and within walking distance of city centre. Sandor was very helpful with the free parking. The room was bright and airy. Breakfast next day (included in price - great) was substantial and very good.Also eat in the evening at the restaurant below and fantastic meal - see my review of Asheville steakhouse but I suggest you book a table at the same time as booking the room as full on Fridays and Saturdays.
Good value and I can whole heartily recommed.

Great place to stay and friendly staff

Pleasant and good value stay, close enough to the heart of Bristol. We stayed here for only one night, prior to going to the airport the next day. 

The stay here, although a short walk from the city, provided everything we needed, including fridge and microwave facilities. The breakfast was very impressive, in particular the pastries!

Pleasant

Friendly staff, very clean, excellent breakfast, great location for shopping and exploring the city and easy access to Bristol City ground. Really good to have free parking. Didn’t eat in restaurant but was very popular and food looked good.

Excellent overnight accommodation with great breakfast

We stayed for one night to go to the Bristol Hippodrome and the hotel is situated about a miles away and was an easy walk. There is free on road parking with a permit provided by the hotel. The hotel was clean and the staff friendly and helpful.  The room was a little small but had everything you needed.  Breakfast was included and was very nice with cereal, pastries and a cooked plate.  I would stay here again.

Friendly Staff, Good Location, Nice Breakfast

We arrived before check-in time, so we popped in to see if it was alright to pick up a parking permit early.  We were told that you get the permit at check-in, but he would make an exception.
When we did check-in, we were greeted warmly by a young lady who showed us our room.
The room was spacious with a small kitchenette, fridge, kettle, microwave and sink.
The bathroom was nice and clean.  The room also had an air conditioning unit.
The rooms are over the bar/restaurant, but we did not hear any noise whilst we were there.
It is a short walk to the newly developed Wapping Wharf and the SS Great Britain.
The freshly cooked breakfast was also good and nice fresh pastries served daily.
A good value place to stay.

Short Walk Away From City Centre

Clean, near to city, breakfast amazing. Eggs just how I like them. If you want value for money good service recommended 😎

accommodation near venue I was attending was in my budget. clean, everything we needed,food great, staff  helpful 9/10

Bar closes way too early retire you my room no milk for my coffee went back down to the bat knocked on the door no reply. No milk nothing what is the point of coffee in the room, absolutely disgusted by this
