I stayed at Backwell House between Sept 2021 through to Feb 2022 and I found it to one of the best hotels I've stayed at in a long time.  The bedrooms and beds themselves so comfortable, better than my own!  Food is cooked and presented to an exceptionally high standard and the overall ambience very relaxing whether you are on business or a romantic get away.  The staff are so helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble.  Set in beautiful grounds with a fantastic view. Highly recommended whatever the time of year.

Relaxing and fabulous food

A really lovely hotel. 

We booked a one night stay to celebrate my Birthday. 

The staff were very welcoming and our room (Hobbs) was incredible. 

We went with the dinner, bed and breakfast package. The food was excellent and all in all our one night stay with the three course meal was good value for money. 

Special mention to the team covering breakfasts. You appeared to be rushed off your feet when we came down but everyone was really upbeat and we had an excellent breakfast. Wouldn’t normally book into the same place twice but we’re considering a return visit it was that good 👌🏻

Five stars from us

We booked an over night stay with dinner and breakfast. On arrival we received a warm welcome, after checking we were taken to our room and left to settle in before dinner. The room was very comfortable and clean and had  nice shower room. We dressed and went to the restaurant and was shown to the lounge for a pre dinner drink. The dining room was warm and inviting. We selected three courses from the festive menu all were beautifully presented and full of flavour. We slept soundly in a comfortable bed and rose to enjoy a full English breakfast. Throughout our stay the management and staff were all friendly and attentive. Blackwell house is surrounded by beautiful ground and although close to a main road, very quiet and relaxing.

Relaxing break

Despite informing both on booking and 5 days before the afternoon tea that two people had allergies; both allergies had not been taken seriously. 
Nut allergy person was brought a nut free stand that contained praline tart. When I questioned it , I was told just don’t eat that one. Being an epipen carrier I insisted on a new plate of cakes. My daughter who has a strawberry allergy was informed on arrival that they had put raspberry jam on the table. The cake stand came and contained victoria sandwich which after asking twice we found out that it contained strawberry jam. All the other cakes were touching the said cake so again my daughter had to ask for a separate plate to be brought out for her .  I was reluctant to eat my selection of cakes even after being brought a separate plate. I had lost confidence in their ability to handle and take seriously food allergies . The festive  turkey sandwiches were actually ham and cranberry. 
The scones were over baked and were crusty. My daughter received no separate cream to go with her raspberry jam. 
The Brie and onion chutney tarts were nice. 
There were 4 adults and one child in our party as “a sorry we got mixed up with the food” they offered to not charge the 7 year old! We had booked the afternoon tea as my daughter was hoping to marry there. Tbh I’m not sure I’m willing to contribute towards an £11000 wedding if they can’t get afternoon tea correct for 2 allergy sufferers. 
Staff seemed totally unaware how serious serving allergy suffers is. It’s life threatening .

Poor at catering for allergies

A really good lunch in lovely surroundings - food and service were amazing. I had cauliflower soup which was very tasty along with olive bread, followed by turkey - the stuffing was delicious. Also shared a stunning bottle of Malbec. Special mention to Miles and his team.

Christmas Lunch Treat

We visited this Hotel for 2 nights to meet our 2 friends from N Devon. Our rooms were comfortable and spacious.  The staff were friendly and welcoming.  The big disappointment was our dinner. Our table was booked for 7.30 and we were told that not everything on the menu was available. We chose venison and only two portions remained.  Myself and one our friends had these.  Six chunks of venison arrived  on the plate with warm mashed potatoes and vegetables.  Neither of us could get our knife through the venison - it was dry and over cooked.  My husband ordered chicken with quails eggs and a chicken fried egg appeared on top of the chicken instead of quails eggs!  My friends pheasant was also dry and over cooked.  The waitress wanted us to select another main course but our appetite was disappearing,   We were refunded for 3 of our main meals.  A big letdown for a 4 star hotel. I do hope the Hotel take note of this.   Our second night we cancelled our restaurant booking and ate in the pub down the road where we saw other hotel guests.

Dinner disappointing

We had a simply fabulous weekend at Backwell for our wedding on 9th October - a family meal the night before, exclusive use of the venue through until the Sunday, and a magical ceremony set in the wonderful grounds. We cannot thank everyone at Backwell enough - for the support of Lotty, wedding coordinator, in helping our plan the event, as well as Sam and Leanne and all the rest of the staff for letting us feel at home and spoiling us rotten. The food was glorious, service impeccable, and rooms indulgent & comfortable. Everyone commented on what a wonderful and perfect venue Backwell was for our event and some are plotting to hold their own events in the New Year.

Simply fabulous!

I was travelling alone and wanted an overnight stay before an early flight at Bristol airport  ( only 3.5 miles away). I was blown away by Backwell House, the grounds were stunning and the quality of the food was top notch, if I’d stayed a second night I could happily have ordered the same dishes two nights running, top marks to the chef.

A hidden gem

This compact country manor is a fabulous short break destination for anyone wanting a place to relax whilst exploring Bristol and Somerset. It's a solid four star hotel - very comfortable with stylish decor straddling 'boutique hotel' and 'gentleman's club'. We actually got to experience two of the rooms - Hobbs and Robbins - both of which were large enough to accommodate a baby cot. However, for us, Hobbs, with its free-standing bath, windows that opened wider and working shutters by far was the better room. Being quite pale in decor, Robbins looked more tired, and we were unable to use the shutters in the same way to draw the curtain halfway around our daughter's bed (I appreciate this hack isn't something many visitors will need). Also, the Robbins bathroom looks impressive at first, until you realise there is no shelf space and it just all feels rather inconvenient. So, 5* for Hobbs and maybe 3.5* for Robbins. Reading a book in the bath in Hobbs with the sun coming up over the rose gardens was an absolute highlight - bliss! 
One area the hotel is really missing a trick is the bar knowledge and selection. The cocktails are limited (and more like a spirit and mixer than a proper cocktail, when you read the ingredients), but the real failing is the wines, which weren't good. We didn't get any sense of passion for the alcohol on offer, and 
 didn't have a single glass of good wine despite sampling. Passion for the bar offerings would really elevate this place, and help make it a 'destination' hotel - - it already has so much going for it.
The really wonderful thing about this compact manor is the gardens. It was so lovely to explore the roses and tomato plants. 
A very nice stay indeed.

Very enjoyable post-lockdown stay

Was looking forward to trying their restaurant - what a disappointment  to say the least. Can't remember a poorer meal and pricey at that. A nice place. but for definite we won't be using this eatery again.
