Ok, so the brilliant weather helped but what a gem of a hostel, nestled by Llyn Gwynant in striking distance of Snowdon. The hostel is well set-up, good self-catering kitchen NB. No free tea or coffee anymore!) with character and charm. Loved an evening walk to the waterfalls,  and the morning light over the lake was magical. Highly recommended! 

Magic in Snowdonia

Or it will be when the YHA has finally given it the TLC it deserves! Imagine a manor house in a wood full of wonderful old trees that has about half a mile of frontage on the main road, on the shore of a lake at the foot of Snowdon. But the trees don't hinder the view of the lake from the house. Morning views especially can be magical, with mist below sunlit mountain tops and perfect reflections in a lake like glass... It doesn't get better then that! The current staff are simply the friendliest, most helpful people you could wish to meet, and there's nothing they won't do to make your stay even better! (A few of the past staff weren't so pleasant, but they've gone, so what does it matter?)

I discovered this haven of peace, beauty and friendliness in 2006 and since then have usually returned twice a year, but this year I'm clocking up four stays! I've never stayed in a private room; always in the communal women's bedroom which seems to me to be the nicest bedroom in the house. The showers are good; the drying room is first-class; the self-catering kitchen is newly refurbished and smart, though in common with most Youth Hostels it's bit small so sometimes I put off cooking for a little while, but I never have to wait long. Everywhere is very clean and tidy; if I find anything amiss and mention it to the staff, it is very quickly dealt with.

Negative reports mystify me: how can these people be talking about the same place? Maybe some of the past staff let things slip that the present marvellous crew would never tolerate. Maybe it's about attitudes. I think some people believe that smart accommodation on holiday is the same as being happy. Yet I've always noticed that real holiday magic seems to go hand in hand with simple accommodation. 

Perhaps it's the neglect that the YHA has permitted Bryn Gwynant to suffer. If a 19th century house, apparently last refurbished in the mid-20th century isn't properly maintained, it is going to show signs of this neglect. As you can tell, I don't let this interfere with the happiness of being here; instead I've blamed the YHA, spending millions elsewhere while ignoring the desperate needs of this wonderful house, and for years it's made me fear for its future! But now help is in sight - the YHA is running the Bryn Gwynant Appeal for a £2 million overhaul, and next year we'll see what they've achieved. It's going to be 5 star. Not too pricey I hope! I don't want to be forced to reduce my visits!

The Jewel in the YHA's Crown...

We came here for a short break and what a beautiful location.  The hall is impressive and we werer in the stable block a short walk from main building which had a huge upstairs kitchen and lounge.  Only downside was no wifi in the stable block.  Breakfast was usual YH fare (cheap and cheerful ingredients).  Staff were very nice and we would go back.  Be warned it is 5 miles to nearest shop and pubs if you need anything.  The smell of petrol from the heating system was a bit much when window was open.

Idyllic location - peaceful and beautiful valley

Beautiful location, hostel, and people who also went out of their way to make hiking possible for me, letting me leave my bag there while I hiked. The lady was so nice while I figured out my plans and organized my day, super helpful. The hostel is old and wonderful, with a fabulous drying room and kitchen and lounge and dining area. Bathrooms are good, though the shower layout is not at all my favorite but seems to be the common style these days. 

Beautiful beautiful beautiful and then also really helpful

We loved this hostel so much ! We are a family of 4 (twin boys aged 11). Absolutely wonderful location - the panoramic view of the lake and surrounding hills (or mist on a rainy day) is breathtaking . Lovely community feel with very helpful staff who are happy to give you great guidance on the various walks available right from the doorstep. We climbed snowden via watsons path which you can access directly  from the hostels doorstep. 
Rooms and facilities are what you would expect from a hostel - functional , basic , but clean and beds are comfy . Very good kitchen and lounge area. Thank you - we want to come back soon! 

Stunning Snowden adventure

This hostel is very good value. Dorm bunks are comfortable, and the location is beautiful, right on a lake & almost next to Snowdon. Self-catering kitchen is decent (if busy) staff friendly & helpful, & crucially there's a good drying room. As mentioned in other posts, the place does need some TLC & modernisation, for which YHA are currently fundraising. Water in the showers could have been hotter, but overall, great for the price.

Comfy beds, great location, great value

Arrived at the YHA Bryn Gwynant, to be met with most spectacular views, also a beautiful building full of character. The hostel staff were fabulous, really helpful with anything from the nearest supermarket to info regarding attractions in the area, plus directions. The hostel was really clean, rooms basic but to be expected. 

Short stay

Excellent value for money, pleasant and helpful staff, decent breakfast, some bits could do with a little tlc. Really well situated for some fantastic walking though, good WiFi which was important in the absence of a phone signal. I would recommend.

Good place to stay

54 of my colleagues and I stayed at this hostel following a day spent climbing Mount Snowdon. Given some of the reviews we had read we were a little apprehensive, however I'm happy to say that we didn't experience any of the horror stories previously reported. The lodgings are relatively clean, comfortable and perfectly situated for people climbing the hill. Food was decent both in the evening and the morning. Showers were hot in the evening after our climb, but not so in the morning which is probably to be expected given the rurality of the site and a minor criticism. Outside the hostel there is a firepit with a spectacular view, picnic tables and The Giants Chair photo op! For the price we paid (less than £50 per head for DBB) I found little to nothing worth complaining about, especially going in with a reasonable expectation of a YHA experience.

Well suited to large climbing groups

Stunning location and great base for a huge variety of walks for all abilities. The hostel communal areas could do with a source up but the kitchen is new and the drying room is great. The hostel was very quiet so you are guaranteed a good night's sleep. Smell of sweaty socks in our family room wouldn't go away as our window wouldn't ipen so not ideal! Overall though a great base for families intent on walking and sightseeing
