I stayed in the Barefoot with my mum, for 3 nights and I must say from the minute we arrived we where welcomed so warmly by Peter. He showed us our sea view room which was absolutely stunning, you could just sit at the window and watch the world/boats go by. The room was extremely comfortable, especially the beds which are like lying on clouds. The breakfast was top notch and just over all such a lovely lovely experience for our first time being in Campbeltown. I can't recommend this little guest house enough, it's ideal for being close to the main street but for myself it was being so close to the sea and harbor. We will both definitely be back and we can't thank Peter and Carol enough for everything they done. 

Absolutely spot on! 

We stayed here for two nights in July 21. Our host was clearly passionate about his community and had lots of helpful tips about where to go and see which was very useful as first time visitors. 

Our bedroom was huge with two comfortable single beds and an en suite. I thought it was a nice touch to have Arran Aromatic hand wash in the en suite. Plenty of storage, a large wardrobe, a large chest of drawers and unit between the beds. Plenty of plugs also. We had a beautiful view of the harbour.

Breakfast was delicious, with a full cooked breakfast done to order and lovely coffee. 

We felt the B&B was well situated and it was nice to have a stroll back after eating dinner.

My only criticism is a tiny one. I like a biscuit with my tea, but really I am being mega picky here. A great stay and we will happily return.

Excellent stay

I recently spent three nights at Braefoot. The owners are very nice and helpful people. Braefoot is not in the dead centre of town, but it’s only 5-10 minutes walk away. You could easily walk from the harbour here with your luggage.

The breakfasts are hearty and on my day of departure, as I was leaving very early, I was given a packed breakfast to take away

The room was clean and tidy. When my TV was not working, I told the owner and he fixed it. Not a problem. There was an abundance of tea and coffee in the room too. It’s great to see this! I have often run out in other B&Bs.

Due to technical issues with the ferry from Ireland, I also had to change my dates of stay at the last minute. The owners were very accommodating and let me do this free of charge. 

Some of the negative reviews on here may be honest, but some are a little unfair. Critics of no car parking really need to get real! There is plenty of on-street parking nearby. Campbeltown is not exactly a busy metropolis, and unless you are there when an event is on, parking is really a non-issue. You can park your car within walking distance of Braefoot.

If I could improve the stay in anyway, the bathroom looked a little dated. A few extra coat hangers in the room would have been nice too.

But overall, I had a very enjoyable stay at Braefoot and would happily recommend it to other travellers.

just 5 minutes walk from the centre of town and (almost) on the sea front, the inside belies the outside, which looks like it needs a repaint. inside the bedrooms are functional and comfortable to a good standard at a reasonable price. The host is ameniable and the English breakfast good.

We stayed for one night having arrived in Campbeltown by ferry, as part of a short holiday in Argyllshire.

This is a grand house with some gorgeous original features. Rooms are large - ours was massive.  We had an en-suite bathroom and a comfortable bed.

Our host was welcoming and helpful. The breakfast was very generous.

The house is not that easy to find and is not signed as a B&B, so get directions! It’s painted purple and white which is quite distinctive and is very central, with a bit of a sea view from the front.

Price is quite high, but pretty much what you expect in the Highlands.

A good option if you are in Campbeltown.



Grand house, friendly welcome

It's a beautiful house with spacious rooms and located 5min walking from the town centre. The breakfast was good and served in the dining room at a chosen time. The shower had a really low water pressure. Apart from that it was alright.

Was ok

We stayed here 1 night whilst visiting family in the town. It’s an old house with beautiful features. We had problems finding the place as the signage is non existent!! Bikes were in parking space so we parked on the street. We were shown to our room, which was a family room with 1 double and 1 single bed. Place has obviously been decorated recently as it smelled strongly of paint. Beds were very uncomfortable!! En-suite was fine had everything we needed and was clean. We were asked when we wanted breakfast and we said 9am. Breakfast was fine we had usual cooked breakfast and was loads of choice of cereals etc. This place does not accept cards prefers cash!!  We paid £130 for 1 night. Certainly not worth that considering you can get a branded hotel for £55 and there’s more on offer. Wouldn’t be keen to stay here again!! 

Ok!!

First, the man who runs this B&B is kind. Breakfasts were good. I would love to direct other travelers to this place, but our 2 night visit to Campbeltown depressed me because of our room. 1. So much furniture that there was no place to put our luggage in the very small room. 2. Paint peeling off walls. 3. Bed sank when we got into it. No joke: beds usually will dip in spots but the entire mattress moved down 3 inches when we went to bed. 4. Bathroom in our room was literally a cabinet with a door. The toilet is 1” away from the wall. Unsure how one is to sit on it straight, so one sits sideways. When an airplane restroom offers more room, you know how far you’ve sunk. 5. Wi-Fi did not reach rooms on second floor. I had to stand at the top of the stairs to use it. Uggggh! 6. Cash only. Created problems for us because I hadn’t planned on that. If you can live with all of that, then this place is aces!

Depressing experience

First I'll get the positives out of the way. 

From the outside, first impressions are it's a nice old house with character (if you can locate it as the signage isn't exactly good).

The location isn't bad - Kintyre is beautiful and there are many things to do assuming the weather behaves.

That's it for the positives.

The room / ensuite I was in is in dire need of refurbishment. The house smells fusty.
It does have some nice architectural features - that is true.
Pets allowed - wouldn't have booked if I'd seen this.

Note that this property does not accept credit cards (so no comeback if you have issues). Cash / Bank Transfer only.

Also beware of the cancellation policy. Free cancellation up to 8 days before you get there - wow, great. Premier Inn let you cancel at 1pm on the day.

Free parking - yes there's free parking on the street! Tiniest bit of parking off road which two motorbikes had filled when I was there. I had to park on the very steep hill at the side.

I arrived late in the day (after phoning the owners several hours in advance).

As soon as the door was opened there was a fusty smell that hit me. Not a good start. 

One of the owners (not local to the town) showed me up the stairs and acorss the creaky landing to my room.

The room was huge with small bits of furniture dotted around looking lost.

An attempt at decoration / maintenance had been made on the ceiling in this room. Looks like they gave up after a couple of hours. Either that or there is an issue with the ceiling in that room.

I've stayed at a lot of B&B's and hotels in the UK - to give you an idea, I've stayed at 3 separate hotels for 9 nights in total in 16 days since this B&B. I measure this B&B against the many hotels and B&B's I stay at. This is in my bottom 3 of staying in hotels / B&B's in the last 20 years. Certainly the worst since 2003.

This is the first place I've stayed at using un-ironed dark brown bed sheets. Why not white like everyone else? Sure the towels were a dark colour too. 

The en-suite, though very basic and as contemporary as Russ Abbott was a decent size. It had a postage stamp sized mirror. Looked like maybe one mirror tile - the others were probably spread about the B&B! No idea on the operation of the shower or if there even was hot water.

Very odd arrangement for the ensuite in that there was a door from the ensuite directly into the landing. This had an extremely flimsy barrel bolt to hold the door. Anyone mistakenly trying that door from the landing could find you in the ensuite in all your glory. 

I was recovering from a throat infection which had knocked me for six. The house was fusty and my room was cold despite being late June. I do not feel the cold. The radiators in the room did not appear to work. There was a tiny portable heater provided (suggesting there was an issue with the radiators) which was hopelessly inadeqaute for such a large room.

I did get into bed though didn't check the mattress or sheets (couldn't see much being dark brown in any case). The room hadn't heated at all and I could feel the fusty atmosphere in my throat and lungs. After about 15 minutes, I thought I did not want to risk my health by staying there. Then went to another hotel in the town to see if they had any rooms - they did so I booked in there.

I did not leave this B&B just because I changed my mind. I left because the B&B in my mind did not meet expectations of somewhere charging £96 per night in Campbeltown. I also did not want to risk my recovery by staying in a fusty old house. As I've mentioned already, I stay at a huge amount of places throughout the UK and this was definitely below par. Yes the room was big, but this was not worth anywhere near £96. I don't stay in places like this so don't know what they do charge.

The key to the front door was sticky - I got the separate room key stuck in my door. Could not get it out despite much fiddling. I would have had to have slept with the key in the door. By now it was close to midnight and no-one was up at this point to help. I couldn't be bothered with a confrontation with the owners at this late our so I left.

I even sent the owners a message to say I'd left so they didn't waste food in the morning expecting me to be there at breakfast. Shouldn't have bothered as they charged me full price - for the three nights - didn't even get a reduction for breakfast which I didn't eat. 

I advised the B&B that "I left because I wasn't happy with the room".

Now, Braefoots owners may respond by saying I didn't bring these issues up with them at the time I was there. Yes, that is correct, but are they going to sort out the fusty smell within a couple of minutes at midnight? Are they going to refurbish the property and address all these issues while I pop to the bog?

I do not regret leaving, though I do regret booking it, and also paying in full. I can't think of many establishments that would accept full price for 3 nights when the customer was not happy with the room.

Because of Braefoot Guest House falling way below expectations, I had to book another hotel in the town at a cost of £429. Thus those three nights have cost me £717. Thanks Braefoot! The other hotel was excellent by the way - nice clean white bedding, non creaky floors, secure room, quiet, warm and also excellent customer service.

I hardly ever leave reviews on tripadvisor as I stay at so many - I will try to leave reviews for the 3 hotels I've stayed at since Braefoot - all excellent.

Don't say here - there are other excellent Hotels / B&B's in and around Campbeltown. There will be others though I can't comment as I've not stayed in them for years. Otherwise sleep in your car. Dalintober beach has some sheltered spots too. Perhaps the cave at Davaar?
