What a fabulous stay on my Coast2Coast - looked after beautifully by Katie, Romy and the everyone. Lovely welcoming atmosphere, delicious food (pub fare and fantastic Thai Green Curry!) Breakfast superb and Katie couldn’t have done more to make my stay so comfortable and memorable. Thank you! x

Comfortable stay and such a warm friendly atmosphere

Against my better judgment, I booked a room at the Tavern in May 2022 for September 2022 and paid £60.00 deposit (on a room costing £130 per night) as all other decent accommodation in the area was already booked out (it was the NYMR Autumn Steam Gala weekend). There were no terms and conditions attached to this goodwill deposit.

Unfortunately, I became unable to travel on the date I had booked and so notified the landlord "Taff" by email of the cancellation a week before the date of the reservation, and requested a refund of the deposit paid.

He refused to make any refund. I suggested to him that as the room was booked during the NYMR Steam Gala weekend, he would have no difficulty in reselling it, and that if he did resell the room, he should make the refund. He emailed me back that he WAS willing to make a refund in such circumstances.

As I didn't really believe him - given the negative comments made about Taff by almost all other reviewers, I got a friend to enquire about availability on the night in question on the previous evening, only to be told that there were no vacancies on that night, i.e the Tavern was full (my room had been resold) - as I suspected it would be.

As I hadn't heard from Taff I emailed him to enquire about my refund only to be told that he hadn't managed to sell my room.

So .... in addition to Taff being worthy of an Oscar for being the most despicable landlord in Yorkshire (according to most TripAdvisor reviewers), he also tells as well as sells porky pies. What a surprise!

My advice to everyone is keep well clear of the Station Tavern as everybody I have subsequently spoken to says the place is filthy, decrepit and appallingly run, so I think I have been spared an ordeal. On reflection, the loss of my deposit may have been a blessing in disguise, as it would in all probability have ruined my holiday.

Don't hand over a deposit for your booking - you'll never get it back

I booked this hotel for my wife's 50th birthday surprise and brought her mum and dad along too. I originally wanted to be in Whitby but couldn't get anywhere. Taff, the landlord, is a grafter up from the crack of dawn til early hours making sure things are right. I've read the reviews giving this place a slating and quite frankly think that the Ritz wouldn't please you! Taff took over the Station tavern last year and is ploughing loads of money into renovating it. Our experience is that the atmosphere is relaxed and very welcoming. Taff and his team deserve every success and we will return!!

Hit on a winner

myself, partner and dog have stayed in this b&b for the last 4 years now and unbeknown to us it changed hands this year, I will start with the good bits
food good - breakfast excellent, rooms good spacious and clean.
However Taff you need to brush up on your hospitality attitude.
You do not display when you are open for business food etc leaving potential customers in the dark, also not serving food after 7pm on a sunday is poor also shutting on a Monday you are losing valuable trade.  Myself and my partner where under the impression that the pub was shut on the Monday so hence we went elsewhere for our evening meal, when we returned you were quite rude about releasing the table we have reserved for that evening - I wouldn't have minded that but the restaurant side was only half full all week!!.
There have been quite a few comments regarding your attitude - this is shame because it reflects badly on the warm welcoming people of grosmont.
Unless you take head of the above and other comments you will not be in business next year

good pub pity about the landlord

We have stayed a couple of times and service and food have been excellent. Unfortunately it has been taken over by a new landlord. Rang and e-mailed today to check our booking for next week. Told they don't take bookings over the phone  so we're unable to tell me if we have a booking or not. We booked a year ago. How do they expect to run a business when they won't except phone bookings. I am not impressed about the service given over the phone and disappointed about a ruined holiday.

No booking

I do not like to write low rating reviews so will start with some positive points. One night stay on the final stages of Coast to Coast.  Bed was large and comfortable which was a bonus, room quaint with a few head bumping obstacles, not a major issue. There was a note in the room apologising for the bathroom (to be updated soon) but we thought it was fine and there were large fluffy towels too. 
Dinner was good, usual pub fare and our waiter really helpful and friendly.  Breakfast was ok although the waiter seemed to be doing everything on his own but it wasn’t too busy and he only had a few tables to serve.
This was never to be a 5 star holiday and in fact it’s great to stay in some quirky and unusual places, all adds to the adventure.  So the only real issue was on checking out the next morning - the front door was locked and bolted, a bit unusual, so together with our guide we unlocked it, ready to set off on our way and were soundly told off by our breakfast waiter (who may also be the owner or manager).  We all thought it was a very rude and surly send off and marred our memories of this brief stay in lovely Grosmont.  
Wherever we stay it is the hosts, their friendliness and hospitality that gets top rating, not fancy decor.  This is not a bad place to stay but we did not find it particularly welcoming.

Could be better

Charged £95 even though I was told £90 when booked earlier in the year, (says £90 on the website ) , chose to have a sherry each as a pre meal drink, tiny measure in a wrong glass which the manager of my local has demonstrated was a wrong measure ,a quarter of the amount it should have been, £3 each. A rip off.  Evening meal was great, breakfast pretty poor, how you can do that to bacon I don't know. 
We should have stayed at Mallyon Spout Hotel, same price, vastly higher quality.
Never again.

Very poor value

Stayed one night at this pub, will be back in the future, from check in to checkout, a good experience, had evening meal we both had a starter, then gammon (not to salty) only problem was we were both too stuffed to have a pudding.
Room was clean, bed comfy, biscuits and tea/coffee provided.
Breakfast was ample, cereal, fruit juice, then a good fry up with plenty of toast.
New tenants/owners have taken over within the last month, we both wish them well.
Would recommend staying here if you have a trip booked on the nymr

Overnight stay 

I liked it here. Good atmosphere. Right next to the steam railway. A very welcome large bedroom and loads of tea and coffee and biscuits. The barman / host (Andrew?) was really helpful including bringing heavy cases to the room and service all round was good as was the bar food and breakfast.
