We popped in with no reservation for an evening meal for 4 wondering whether we could be accommodated. We sat by the cosy log fire and were given menu's with a specials of the day menu too. 
The service was excellent.  
The food,  when it arrived, didn't disapoint. The chef is brilliant.  Well done. Hope you get this message as you should be proud of your food.

Excellent foodie experience 

What pub these days don’t allow dogs and children in for food and beers on a Saturday when the pub is quarter full. Rude staff to boot. The 7 of us went into Thornbury and spent £150 on a meal and beers. Good luck to you as a business, clearly stuck in the 70’s still.

Avoid if you’re a family with a dog

Well located for a great walk down to the Severn Estuary this is a nice pub with a garden alongside the river. The food was excellent - the sausages were clearly local butchers and just crumbled in the mouth. Really good.
We stayed in Dobbins Room which was clean and nicely furnished. Breakfast is provided for self-assembly in the morning but it was very good. We really enjoyed our stay.
There is, as has been mentioned in other reviews, some fan noise in the room. It appears to come from a kitchen extractor mounted elsewhere in the building ...which seems to transmit noise through the structure of the building. It does go on all night ...so a warning perhaps if you are a light sleeper.

A nice place to stay and good food

I was recommended to try The Anchor by a local  --  and she certainly knew what she was talking about.  The food is excellent (without posing as gastronomic) and the service is efficient and friendly. I had a Caesar salad made with chicken peri peri and my guest had ravioli  --  both delicious.

An excellent and unpretentious pub lunch

After sitting down, getting drinks and placing our food order for 6 adults and 2 children we were told that actually no children or dogs welcome in the pub! All very awkward as orders had been taken and nothing mentioned. We were told we could stay inside for the meal. 
Later when wanting to order puddings we were told we would have to move outside and would have to be eat them  outside ( it was heavily raining). Apparently their “ policy” is not to allow children or dogs, which was explained to me by a young, inexperienced bar staff who had no idea about customer service. Perhaps it might be an idea to explain this at point of arrival, not once we had ordered over £120 worth of food and drinks and settled in our seats, telling us 30 mins later so we all very awkward 

So the summarise the service was beyond rude and to add further insult to injury the food was very average 
- roasts - bland - Luke warm. No condiments like mustard or even cutlery offered until we chased them 
-  other food choices - again no flavour and Luke warm 

- staff - inexperienced and clearly not trained on how to deal with paying customers professionally. When I asked to speak to the manager apparently they were “upstairs” not available 

The irony is this pub is opposite a popular dog walking route / family walk along the Severn. 

So very behind the times.

Sunday lunch: no children or dogs welcome. Food and service below average, cold and bland

What a lovely little pub - a true hidden gem!  We stopped for a couple of cheeky pints after a walk along the Severn Way, and the welcome was as warm as the lovely log fire. Perfect draft Bass on tap just topped it off!

Fabulous traditional pub

Charming village pub. Stayed overnight mid-week and enjoyed both my walk down to the river and a very nice evening meal in the bar which was busy and benefits from a fabulous open fire.

Less enthusiastic about my accommodation. There is a noisy piece of machinery in a shed opposite the rooms, it felt like I was on a cross channel ferry and I resorted to my earplugs ( I travel a lot and sometimes need to adapt). My room "Dobbins" was very clean and I have mixed feelings about a breakfast of cereal & toast left in the room together with a toaster & kettle (BTW - the yoghurt and some of the cereal provided was dated best before sometime in September) 

Overall its a bit self service; you let yourself in, pay you invoice in the bar and depart leaving the key where you found it. That said the staff were friendly, beer well kept and the food excellent, I had fish pie wih a side salad.

Limited Reservations

Excellent accommodation clean and spacious room good choice of breakfast items in room including granola , yoghurt fresh juice and milk for coffee bed was very comfortable and staff are friendly and welcoming, stayed overnight for a local wedding would recommend

Perfect b & b

Found The Anchor online, the web site is a little dated but don’t let that put you off stopping here.

I messaged them late into the evening and got an instant response.

I booked on-line and received my confirmation.

Again the room pictures were not great so I have taken some to add as their pictures certainly do not to the room justice.

Upon arrival I was greeted by a very friendly smile and was shown to my room “Dancer”

Breakfast is taken in your room and consists of yogurt, cereal ( 4 or 5 options), bread, butter, jams, orange juice, water and a carton of milk.

A toaster is in the room along with a kettle and plenty of tea & coffee.

The room is spotlessly clean and the bed is really comfortable.

The bathroom is also spotlessly clean and the photo’s do not show the separate shower.

Being in a small village you would expect that the food would be good and it is and served by very polite and friendly staff.

With work, I stop in many hotels over a year and have to say this is one of the best ever.

I can highly recommend The Anchor

What A Great Place

What more could you ask for? Excellent Sunday lunch. Bass is spot on and being a free house, well priced. My wife’s Gin and lemonade was even cheaper - she enjoyed the Bombay Blackberry. We shared the sticky toffee pud. All well presented in a very traditional pub with big old wood fire. Staff are attentive and friendly.  One of our local pubs but no reason to overlook this excellent pub. 👍👍👍
