Booked as a stop over break for one night and we were very upset to discover on checking out that this Hotel will be closing permanently in December 2021.  The staff were all wonderful, the food was excellent, and we couldn't fault it.  Just such a shame we won't be able to book into it ever again.

Excellent hotel. Staff friendly and food excellent. Decor is wonderful and very tasteful. Shame the hotel is closing as I would have liked a few more stays.  Cannot fault the service and location either.  Enjoyed my stay....................

Excellent stay

My mum, sister and I visited this hotel for a couple of nights. The staff were very friendly, helpful and looked after us extremely well. As my mum had difficulties in walking, she was moved to a suite at the top of the stairs, which was lovely. Our twin room was very comfortable, and clean. The food was excellent. This hotel is well worth a visit while it remains open.

Family Break

I brought my visit forward as I’d seen it’s closing and my daughter said I needed to visit.Wish I could’ve stayed for more than one night. However it was lovely. From entering the hotel service was fantastic, beautifully decorated, good selection at breakfast and Emma was really attentive credit to the hotel, such a shame it will be closing! Will hopefully be back before then…

Fabulous

Beautifully decorated throughout, huge bedroom, great bathroom, incredibly comfortable bed, lovely service. What more can you ask for? Had an evening meal and breakfast and both were delicious. Steak salad starter was cooked to perfection and was a steal at £8, while we genuinely thought we were undercharged when discovering the chef special pork fillet was only £14! Thoroughly enjoyable visit and such a shame that it appears to be closing down at the end of the year

Fantastic hotel

What can I say about The Iliffe Hotel? What an amazing day and night. The staff made sure we had everything we needed to make the day so special. The food was gorgeous, I had a gluten free 3 course meal. The whole of the team were friendly and so kind. Best wedding ever x
The only negative thing is it is not disabled friendly if you were staying overnight as there isn’t a lift to the rooms. I struggled unfortunately as I walk with crutches. But I don’t want to take anything away from the magical day.

Pictures didn’t match the room we received.. room tiny, the whole hotel was so nice warm! Average food, understaffed hence service was extremely slow! View on busy road and untidy bin area!  Overall very disappointing

My partner and I stayed at The Iliffe for a total of 5 nights in June 2021: this was our first ‘staycation’ together following the relaxing of restrictions in relation to COVID-19. We stayed at The Iliffe on a Dinner, Bed, and Breakfast rate which meant that we had breakfast and a three course meal included each day. As a whole, we both must say that we were immensely impressed and pleased with our stay. While there may have been a few occasions on which the service was not quite as expected, we extend our thanks to the lovely staff of The Iliffe who helped to make this trip a truly enjoyable one that we will remember for a very long time. We particularly thank the waitresses Stacey, Sarah, and Katie, as well as the managers Ivan (at least this is what I presume his role is) and Victoria.

Positive notes:

The hotel itself is an absolutely beautiful venue and communal areas are elegantly decorated to a high standard, while retaining the gorgeous charm of the original building.
The bedrooms are equally beautifully decorated and have a lovely homely and cosy feel to them. We stayed in a ‘Superior’ room, which I believe is the hotel’s entry-level room. Our room was of a large size and had all of the facilities that you would expect from a hotel of this kind. I would advise you that some of the rooms, when seeing them via walking through the halls, do seem to be drastically smaller than others - so I would check on this matter when booking.
Housekeeping services are available daily and are conducted to a professional level.
The hotel seems to offer room service, but we did not choose to opt for this service.
Catering at The Iliffe is, for the most part, exemplary for a hotel of this kind. Meals were - by and large - delicious and service was generally friendly and fast. We were offered a complimentary Afternoon Tea by Victoria, the manager (thank you!), for my partner’s birthday which was absolutely lovely.
Staff members were who really made this stay all the more memorable. From the waitresses at dinner - Stacey and Sarah - to the waitress at breakfast - Katie - and all of our needs in between via Ivan and Victoria, there was never a moment when we felt undermined or that our problems could not be resolved.
The hotel has a very nice ambient feel to it and is generally a lovely place to stay.

Points for improvement:

We did experience some problems with the catering facilities on a few of the nights throughout our stay. The Iliffe only seems to offer a limited menu for their dinner service, compromising of around 5 choices per course. This would ordinarily not be a problem - however, on more than one night, the kitchen seemed to run out of basic ingredients such as cream and could not, therefore, serve specific meals that we wanted. Sadly, this happened on more than one occasion and did make some mealtimes problematic given the already limited menu.
Similarly, the drinks menu both in the bar/lounge area and the restaurant is one that is largely non-existent. By this, I mean that there are drinks on the menu that staff members were not even aware that they sold and ones that we were outright told that they did not serve altogether. Specifically, there seemed to be an apparent lack of cocktails and certain wines which were, however, present on the drinks menu. The hotel did have an extensive wine list and drinks menu nonetheless, but it was a little bit tiresome constantly asking if the bar could or would serve a certain drink.
There seems to be a slight level of inconsistency between chefs at The Iliffe. On one day, a meal could be one thing and be absolutely delicious - on another, it could be a completely different meal and only be half as delicious. I am referring especially to meats such as the steak and lamb. When confronted about this topic, however, staff were apologetic and eager to fix this.
Some communal areas of the hotel could do with a little clean. For example, the beautiful stone window frames in the restaurant seem to have cobwebs and insect webs on them and the glass seems to be either dirty, scratched, or both. Just a little wipe of these would make the world of difference.
Similarly, a slight lack of professionalism in the housekeeping services did raise my eyebrows on one occasion when a bottle of glass cleaner and some cloths were left behind in our bathroom. 
The venue for catering facilities can change quickly for unknown reasons. For example, we were served our Afternoon Tea in an equally beautiful room to the Laura Ashley Tea Room, but some prior notice on this would have been brilliant. Similarly, for the last 2 days of our visit, we were served meals in a different room to those served on the first 3 days of our stay and we were not told about this in advance. This is not particularly a problem, but it did cause some confusion.
There were a few occasions - especially when waiting to be seated at breakfast and dinner - when staff members could not be seen anywhere. This resulted in us standing around for quite some time - over 5 minutes on one day - and feeling very awkward when loitering in a doorway entry. 

If asked whether I would stay at The Iliffe again - the answer is an absolute and definite yes. It is a lovely little hotel that I really would recommend to anybody planning on visiting. It is located in a slightly tucked away place but has fairly good transport connections thanks to Uber and a bus stop being right outside of the hotel’s entrance. The hotel is located off of a *very* busy road that can be quite noisy at night, but this is not too troublesome if the windows are closed. 

I am glad that we were able to experience staying at The Iliffe and we wish the hotel and its staff the very best. We hope to visit again soon - fingers crossed when life returns to some form of normality or - perhaps - in the meantime if we cannot keep away from its clear beauty and potential.

Impressive stay - beautiful hotel with a few points for improvement.

Strangely quiet.but very pleasant. Consequences of Covid I guess. Hotel lovely and the staff were absolutely superb most particularly the lady on reception and Daniel (I think) who seemed to be doing a lot! Will definitely be back!
