This is a fabulous country inn, set in the middle of the North York Moors, and close to the seaside resorts of Whitby, Scarborough and Staithes. Hartlepool and the wonderful Royal Maritime Museum (definitely one not to miss) is within easy reach. This is 'Heartbeat' country. Grant, the owner has done a great job. Lovely, individual rooms, full of character, delicious food, a roaring fire and friendly staff. What more could anyone want! I recommend the Newtondale room with a study and reading room just outside. I intend to return and bring my wife.

The perfect place to stay when visiting the North York Moors.

Nice cosy traditional village pub. Room was very nice, with comfy bed and good tea/coffee set-up. Really excellent evening meal, perfect service. Breakfast was equally delicious - great sausages! Highly recommended. 

Excellent get-away country pub

Went here for our wedding anniversary,  all I can say is no wonder they call it gods country, beautiful  part of the world, pub was very good , old but good, beer was excellent,  food was so simple , homemade , but very well cooked, breakfast the same ,locals were chatty too, was there on the hottest day of the year, room got very warm but who expected  that in September,  if you want a quite break and to be looked after(charles) go here 

Late summer

This charming Inn is an ideal place to stay for easy access to the Jurassic coast. The village has a railway giving convenient transport to Whitby. My en-suite room was clean and well furnished, with room being serviced daily. Food was good freshly prepared, and local produce used for the breakfast. Evening food also available with a specials board each day. Ideal base for cycling and walking being surrounded by moorland in all directions. I took a guided fossil walk on the Jurassic Coast, there are many locations where fossils can be found. I had a very enjoyable trip, very friendly staff and locals and a local cafe for convenient lunches. The only negative point I have is that there is no carpark attached, but you can park in a nearby lay-by and carpark in the centre of the Village. I will be coming back.

Fossil Hunting Trip to The Yorkshire Coast

My father and I had a wonderful stay at this pub. The rooms were great my dad was in a double it was massive I was in one of the singles which was obviously smaller but still had double bed and a brilliant bathroom. We ate here on a couple of nights and the food was fresh and delicious.  It was perfectly situated and we visited whitby, Staithes, Castle howard, walked on the moors and the North Yorkshire railway none of which were over an hour away. 

A great stay

We stayed here for a weekend, looking for somewhere a little quieter to explore Whitby from. We really couldn’t have asked for better. The setting of Danby was beautiful and very tranquil. Walkers would find a lot of options on the doorstep. Our car journey to Whitby took under half an hour but there is a railway station in the village too, as well as a park and ride just outside Whitby on the A171. The staff at the Inn were really helpful with tips on getting about. 

The Duke of Wellington was fantastic. A traditional inn with bags of character, but very comfortable. The food was also excellent, home cooked and with good quality ingredients. Breakfast is ordered the night before along with a time slot, so the next morning your food is served freshly cooked with minimal waiting. 

We absolutely loved the Duke of Wellington and the area as a whole, we’ll be back.

Fantastic stay in a beautiful location

Only called here for a drink as ran out of time duribg our stay near by. Lovely village location,  friendly staff and the menu looked delicious.  Definitely want to eat there next time. Dog friendly inside too.

Great pub food looked delicious

The boy done good again with my birthday treat. Arrived late afternoon after a day in sandsend and Whitby. The staff were very welcoming and friendly from the minute we arrived. The room “Farndale” was lovely, clean and quirky. Very clean indeed. Evening meal was fabulous, red hot and fresh vegetables and plenty of it. Charlie is a great host and so was the lady behind the bar. Would definitely visit again.  Well done Charlie keep up the good work.

Birthday treat

Visited here with my partner for a trip between Christmas and New Year. It was exactly what we wanted. A rustic pub environment with a real fire. The staff were really friendly and the food exceeded our expectations. We tried the food at both here and the Fox and Hound and the Duke of Wellington was much better - highly recommend the steak and ale pie and the fish and chips. The rooms were extremely clean and had everything you could want. The location is great if you enjoy walking like we do or want to visit Staithes, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. Would highly recommend.

Lovely rustic stay

We booked the Duke of Wellington after reading lots of positive reviews on TripAdvisor. We were not expecting luxury but were expecting better than what was delivered. 
The rooms were ok - but when I pulled the window blind down dead insects fell out !!
The restaurant had a limited menu. I asked what the mussels were cooked in and was told they were bought in vacuum packed as were the lamb chops. All very uninspiring.  
There was 8 of us - and were the only people in the restaurant.  Apparently the kitchen could only cope with cooking for 4 at a time !!!
Let me finish on positives -'-- the veggie shepherds pie was very nice as were the puddings + the young staff were very pleasant especially Verity.
