Took my wife and our cocker spaniel here as a birthday surprise. The hotel was very nice with fantastic views across the lake. The owners are very welcoming and really know how to cook the most amazing meals. We were spoilt for choice of walking routes. Would definitely be coming back in the near future. 

Short break

Poor website which is well out of date. So emailed to check they would be open and would be able to get a drink and lunch. Yes they would be open. Arrived to find they were closed. Not happy.
Great walk from and back to Dolgellau went to the Torrent.

Nice walk, but ......

The hotel is in a great location by the side of a lake and with the footpath up to Cadair Idris almost out of the front door. Our room (Gwernan) had a huge bed, a great view and a contemporary bathroom. 
We enjoyed dinner there for our two nights ,venison sausages and pheasant breast and freshly cooked. A good wine list and good value. 
Our dogs were welcomed rather than suffered as in some places, and rewarded with biscuits in the bar as they stretched out in front of the fire.

All we needed for a warm peaceful stay in mid December with our two dogs.

A superb location, a very warm welcome from Maggie and Dai and lovely food.  There was a music event on while we were there and we were upgraded to compensate for any noise, which didn't turn out to be a problem in the end.  The sitting area in our room was just right and, overall, the atmosphere was very cosy.  We hope to come back and enjoy better weather!  Our only suggestion for improvement would be that having background music playing in the dining room is unnecessary and not to everyone's taste.

Homely Atmosphere

Maggie and Dai are wonderful hosts in this small cosy hotel in a stunningly beautiful setting.  The home cooked meals are a treat and you have the opportunity to meet some locals in the bar. Our room was very comfortable and  the location was a perfect base for exploring Snowdonia.

Warm hospitality in beautiful setting

We spent three days on a much needed break at Gwernon Lake Hotel, with our two dogs. The setting is idyllicly peaceful, by a lake on a secluded road running under Cader Idris. Walking the dogs on the many footpaths nearby, I was often in reverie basking in the silence and the play of light over the mountainas. The lake at dusk was Arthurian in its mystery. The accomodation was delightful, tastefully decorated and without the stuffiness often found in hotels that are trying a little too hard. Breakfasts were as healthy or as hearty as you could wish for, using locally sourced ingredients. The staff were unfailingly pleasant and attentive, reflecting the standards of the owners, Maggie and Dai, who have created a litle bit of heaven. Nice touches were the intriguing variety of Welsh music played in the dining room (such a refreshing break from awful hotel muzak) and the Batty Bach bitter on draft in the bar.  For the duration of our stay, the place felt like home (without the cooking and washing up). Small, family-run country hotels don't really get much better than this. Worth revisitng.    

An understated little gem

Comfortable, well equipped room with tasteful furnishings.  Mattress was a little firm but linen and bedding of good quality.  Good En-Suite with spacious shower.  Tasty breakfast with excellent sausages though would have enjoyed some fruit salad or berries rather than just grapefruit.  Pleased my dog was accepted - he enjoyed his swim in the lake!

A small welcoming hotel in a magnificent location

The good news is that the location obviously remains excellent and the rooms are comfortable. Against that, several things were below par including administration of the direct booking process (checkin took ages), dinner (hard, overcooked pork and limp vegetables) and even breakfast (on our last day it took half an hour from the moment of ordering to appear).

But the biggest disappointment was the way we were treated. Maggie seemed not to understand that you have to at least pretend that you are happy to have your guests in your house. The Saturday morning school of charm has not served her well.

Good location but...

Having spent over 25 years staying at Gwernan Lake from the early 1970s I was disappointed as it fell into decline. Now in Dai and Maggies hands it is being rejuvenated and was a joy to stay at. Of course its location is about as good as it gets for you outdoor types but also a wonderful place to just relax. Don’t be put off about set menu dinner that is not right.  There is a small menu to chose from it is just with the small restaurant they need to know on morning what you would like in evening. So for first night telephone and ask.  We did and had beautiful a pork dinner.

Back to its wonderful self

Lovely setting with some fantastic views and a great location explore Snowdonia from. Maggie was a fa host and made us feel very welcome. We walked. around the. 12 acre lake, which was peaceful and just what we wanted from our break.
