Great service and delicious food. We all had steaks which were great quality and well cooked. We all loved the hand cut chips and homemade onion rings too! Will definitely return if we are in the area again.

Wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel. It does tick all the boxes, the food was excellent, the staff are friendly and welcoming. The room was very comfortable and clean. Definitely would recommend. The location is great for local walks and exploring the area.

Special treat

My room was spotless and bed very comfortable. It was quiet in my room and had everything I needed. The staff were helpful and friendly and food good. There was a good choice of foods for breakfast and dinner.

Good experience. 

We stayed for one night recently during our Wales road trip. On the plus side our room was lovely, quaint but with a modern bathroom. The restaurant however was chaotic. We had a mediocre evening meal which we waited ages for and the next day, I had phoned ahead to ask if there were vegan options for breakfast as there is no mention of breakfast on the web-site. I was assured there was 'A full vegan breakfast' on the menu. False! It turns out the breakfast was vegetarian not vegan, even the sausages had cheese in them. I ended up eating just beans on toast and toast and jam (no vegan butter alternative even) On checkout, our room had been charged with another parties food bill! Im sure it was not intentional but if you stay here please check your bill carefully. 
I must single out a member of staff for going above and beyond - Glyn. We left our laptop charger behind and he personally went to two post offices in his own time to get our charger back to us after finding the first post office's roof had caved in! Thank you Glyn, you are an asset to Cross Foxes. If you want an unpretentious, relaxed place to stay, this is for you ..but not if you're vegan :-(

Mixed blessings

We've stopped here on numerous occasions during the years and had no issues at all, everything has always been spot on until this morning's experience.
We decided to stop for a breakfast bap and coffee on the way home from North Wales. We walked to the bar where staff were busy preparing for what we assume was dinner service. It was just after 11am and we asked for coffee and bacon Sandwiches. The lad behind the bar didn't know if they did them and asked another women who was unsure as well. I was given a Sunday lunch menu and a snack menu and they continued to talk amongst themselves apparently everything changes all the time and they didn't know what they were doing and weren't really interested in finding out we stood there for a few minutes with a Roast Dinner menu at 11am and a snack menu neither had a breakfast bacon bap that we asked for. As no one seemed to know what they were serving we just walked out, no one bothered to call after us with an apology. I don't think they even noticed and we were the only customers they had! 

Shocking Service 

We visited for Sunday Lunch after booking a table online there was an option to choose a doggy table which we did not choose. We have nothing against dogs but do not want to eat in an area where dogs are. We had not visited before so assumed that we would be seated in the non doggy area. All seemed ok our meals arrived then within 10 minutes three of the tables around us were suddenly occupied by people with dogs. This really spoiled things for us.
The food arrived quickly. Meat portions were small we had lamb. Mash served which I don’t really like with a roast. A cheap way to fill the plate in my opinion. The menu was non specific it simply said veg if I had known I would have asked them to leave the mash off. Two small pieces of broccoli and a small portion of carrots between us and red cabbage which is not popular with many people. At £17 each this was unacceptable. Also a glass of wine at £8.25.  Would not visit again very poor value for money.

Disappointing

Great place to eat, we visited last year and found food was very good and we were not disappointed on this visit,
Good selection of food at a good price, A good selection of drinks some local,
Staff Very attentive and a good service at a very busy place, 
Look forward to next year, hopefully with no rain!

Good food a great place to eat

The food was wonderful. Such a super Sunday roast. The restaurant and decor is lovely, the bathrooms were really clean (always a good sign) and the service is very friendly. However the service was exceptionally slow. 

To be fair, they were really busy, even after 2pm lunch time. We were seated outside, on the balcony, as everywhere else was full or booked. I saw a sign saying to food could take up to 45 minutes which was absolutely fine. We were also told that, being seated on the balcony, all service would be table service. OK, no problem. 
However, after waiting about 10 mins with no one having been around to take a drinks order, I just popped up to the bar to order our drinks. They were brought out to our table about 10 mins later. All good.

While we were waiting for our drinks to be brought outside, we had someone ask us, at the table, if we'd like to order drinks. When we said we'd ordered them inside she said that's fine and just turned to walk away. But we'd been sitting there for almost 20 mins and were very ready to order our lunch so we had to call her back to do that. The food came relatively quickly, given we'd been prepared for a long wait, but without the veg, that accompanied the roasts we all had, or any cutlery for any of us. We were told they were on their way. The veg arrived first and the whole meal had cooled somewhat by the time the cutlery finally arrived, almost another 10 minutes later. I'd started to eat my roast potato with my hands, I was that hungry.

It was really, really good though. Lovely thick gravy and perfect roasties.

We never saw another server all during our meal, no further drinks were offered and there was no one to ask for the bill, even quite some time after we finished eating. Unfortuntely, sitting outside, we were getting very cold so, eventually I went inside again and requested the bill. After a bit, the server came out and sort of tossed the bill, just a paper slip, on the table, before walking off. 
Not knowing how long it would be before they made another appearance to actually get us to pay, 2 of us went to pay inside. 

I'm more than happy to order and pay at the bar, especially as they were busy. So I'm not quite sure why they insist on table service, for that area, if they (I assume) were too busy to provide it.
The service we did get though, up until the bill, was very friendly and good. It was just very slow and few and far between.

I'd be happy to try them again, if we're ever in the area again. And I really can recommend the Sunday roasts.

The food was truly excellent but the service was shocking

Food Ok second night we chose to eat there. Breakfast quite ok also as long as you don’t mind a few choices on the menu being “not available”.

“Keira” (?) the barmaid loves the sound of her own voice and wants everyone else in the bar/restaurant to hear her too. We spent about £200 in the bar & restaurant on the second night as we (and everyone else) heard her say the night before she was only working until 3 the following day.

We were put off staying to eat and spend the evening there the first night because of her unacceptable volume when talking and cackling to another guest at the bar for over an hour so we departed for Barmouth to eat (The Last Inn, very nice place) She’s needs a quiet word in her ear to either shut up or lower the decibels so that she doesn’t disturb everyone else in the (very echoey) bar/restaurant.

Second night barmaid was much quieter to the point where she could barely manage a grunt to customers and simply gave the impression she didn’t want to be there.

The amount of dogs in the bar restaurant in the evening lends itself more to a campfire environment than a nice restaurant to eat a meal with your partner. 

Several dogs barking right through the second evening in every part of the restaurant, usually at each other.

Lot of choices on breakfast menu not available, including blueberries and smoked salmon.

Situated right on main A487/A470 junction so bring your ear plugs because lots of boy racers and heavy lorries on the road. Also no curtains in room, internal Louvre shutters which let a lot of light in even when turned to close.

Will choose somewhere a little more quaint next time. Need to make up their minds whether they’ve got a bar/grill restaurant, a nightclub with light show or an eat-in kennels.
