We booked the safari suite. We were greeted warmly by the hosts and shown to our room. I gasped with amazement at the decor of all the rooms. The owners had obviously thought very long and hard and worked diligently to find all the appropriate decorations, The fixtures and fittings were of very high quality. We loved the wall tiles in the bathroom and the floor tiles. The owner/host was so friendly and showed us the llamas which I could hand feed. We also witnessed them transferring the emu to greener pastures- which was huge fun!
We couldn’t stop taking photos and sharing them with our friends and family and encouraging them to stay here in the future.
Yes it is bang on the A66 which is busy but this makes it an ideal spot to stay whilst en route to Scotland. In the evening we just drove to Wetherspoons for a great evening meal and drink. I saw that more as a bonus than a detriment.
It was a shame that the cafe and shop weren’t open but I would blame the pandemic not the owners as I had talked to the very nice owner and he explained his predicament. I wish them well in their future ventures as they have shown a great deal of entrepreneurialism.
Afterwards I read some of the reviews. It seems to me that some people are never satisfied. If I could give this a 15/10 I would have done.

I can’t understand what the whingers were writing about!!

Wow what an experience, the accommodation was certainly quirky, but brought many a smile to our faces, very comfortable and well designed, lovely walks close by.  Dog friendly, with good walks close by, River Eden just a short walk away.  Highly recommend this accommodation. Hope to return in the future.

Quirky accommodation

We stayed in the safari suite for 2 nights with two young children. The suite was lovely, we loved all the interesting decor and ornaments and the cuddly toys, lots to keep our eyes happy.  The view was lovely over the fields, though there were no animals in the fields when we were there...  It was winter and rainy.   The kitchen in a cupboard was nice and practical, we didn't prepare any food there but could have made breakfast.  Bring teabags/milk as you won't get loads.
It was on a busy A road, so we could hear road noise, but still slept well. The beds were on the hard side, but I'm like the princess and the pea with beds.
Breakfast wasn't provided due to covid, and the prices had gone up in the cafe for the breakfast which was average (can understand with there being less business with covd) , so maybe take breakfast for a day...  The cafe is lovely though, and there's the animal garden outside so its worth a visit.  The check out was 9am with covid too, which was a little early, but can't been helped in these unusual times!
We went on a llama trek while we were there too, which was wonderful.

Would definitely recommend this place, as its unusual, entertaining, has a good vibe, and plenty to do on and off site (we visited gretna green, and ullswater lake) , would like to return one day

Lovely interesting room, good surroundings

We stayed in the safari suite. It was OK. We stayed because we thought there were animals onsite and this was the place that the Llama tour departed from. There are no animals on site. Its like a motorway service station very very near the motorway. 
The llama tour was fab but we had to drive another 20 minutes to join it after being told it was whene we were staying.

Really want to give more but quality to price ratio is very poor

we stayed here last night.. planned our arrival around the cafe opening hours as we drove for 3 hours to get here..  turned up 1 hour 30 before it said it was closed but we were turned away!!.. did self check in and went for a walk around looking for animals... nothing not one.... got taxi and went out for tea. Came back and the room is actually good but we had neighbours from hell upstairs and its like sleeping in a truck on the motorway.. just no end of busy traffic and road noise. We managed a few house sleep but after 5am we couldn't sleep.. we are waiting for cafe to open at 8am as we have to leave the room for 9am... all this way and won't get to see any animals ?? My daughter is very disappointed. For the money we could of stayed in a decent hotel.... quirky theme but never again..

Disappointed

The Llama Karma Kafe is probably fine as a place to stop for a bite to eat while seeing and interacting with some unusual animals.
As a bed and breakfast experience, Llamas Pyjamas is abysmal.

My partner and I and my partners parents stayed here for two nights. Originally booked last year as a present for them (and understandably pushed back due to Covid), we were excited to be spending a long weekend basking in the best of Cumbrian countryside, in a nicely themed B&B, with the added bonus of having some llamas around to interact with.

First of all, this is not a bed and breakfast. The website does make it quite clear that breakfast is not included in the price, but is available for purchase at the Kafe. Which is technically fine, but I'm of the impression that if you want to call yourself a bed and breakfast, you're expected to include breakfast for your guests.

The Kafe (and rooms) are located in the Cumbrian countryside, and you can see some nice fields from the rooms, but you can also see the A66, a busy, fast main road. And hear it. Because this place is not located on some farm removed from the main road as the website would suggest, but rather, directly on the main road. A Travelodge in a motorway service station is farther from the road than this place. Yes, they provide earplugs in the room. Good luck using those to drown out the drone of traffic speeding past in both directions. Also, be prepared to drive everywhere, because even Brougham Castle, a mere half a mile away, is unwalkwable unless you enjoy becoming roadkill.

We stayed in the Inca room, which looked like it was decorated by a 12-year-old girl whose idea of glamour is the Love Island villa and anything you can see in a Girl Talk magazine. Tacky and chintzy, the only Inca-themed items were two Peruvian wall hangings, such as you might buy from the Indian markets in Lima at the end of your Peruvian holiday. Both of which were overshadowed by the giant silvered plastic wall clock (which didn't tell the time because it had no batteries) and the shockingly pink TV/DVD player on the wall. The room was not properly cleaned; a couple of spiders on the inside might be expected in the countryside, but a chewed cherry stone on the bathroom floor, a musty smell of wet dog and sequined cushions which definitely haven't been washed since purchase lying on the pillows were not. The room seemed to have been roofed with drums, because each step from the guests in the room above was amplified and reverberated through ours.

My partners parents stayed in the adjacent Aztec room, which wasn't a whole lot better (the decoration was presumably done by the mother of whoever did ours, so not quite as abrasive, but still quite tacky and again, not very "on-theme"). Their bathroom didn't almost flood like ours did upon showering, but their mattress didn't have a topper and their bed sheets were not properly cleaned.

Which brings me to prices. For £40 a night, this place would be fine. Not great, just OK. You're not expecting much for £40 a night. However, this place cost us £95 a night, per room. So £380 for two nights. And for that price, this place is not just abysmally disappointing, but feels like a rip-off. Minimal theme, noisy, tacky, and poorly cleaned and maintained and just a poor, poor experience. You don't even get to see any llamas unless you happen to spot them on their way to a trek, or you pay.

When we did our research, we thought it was strange that you would have to pay extra to interact directly with the llamas if you're staying there, but we figured that for our £95, we'd be around them, enjoying them at a distance from our nicely themed rooms - having a "living surrounded by llamas" experience. Not at all.

The Llamas Pyjamas is clearly a poorly-thought afterthought of a probably decent cafe concept. "People love stopping here and having some food and interacting with our llamas, so they'll love staying here also!" they thought, and then proceeded to tack-on a low-tier AirBnB listing behind their kitchen cafe and charge people £95 a night to sleep there without giving them anything else. In order to justify the inflated prices, this place needs to make the Bed & Breakfast part of their offering as important as the Kafe, step-up massively in terms of quality and comfort, and include some llama experience as part of the price you pay for staying here.

Until they do, avoid, avoid, avoid!

Inadequate and disappointing B&B

We have just left after a two night stay in the safari suite. 
When you first walk in there is a definite initial wow factor. The decor is unique and looks great. The kids loved the giant stuffed animals and everywhere you looked there is something new for you to spot. 
However that’s about as good as it got. Checkout was at 9am to allow for a deeper cleaning in current conditions, however it doesn’t look as though that happens and so 9am was just an inconvenience. There was dust on a lot of the ornaments and cobwebs all over the light fitting. 
The beds weren’t the comfiest ever, but manageable, but there were only two very thin pillows on each double bed and no spares. As we weren’t greeted by anyone, just got an email with the check in process we didn’t feel able to request any others. 
Despite being a B&B breakfast wasn’t included and the cafe wasn’t actually open, they were offering a takeaway service from a window and was massively overpriced! £4.95 for a bacon butty!! There were no kids breakfasts and so we got 2x sausage sandwiches, 2 bacon sandwiches & 4 hash browns plus a couple of coffees for £29! The food was fine, but definitely not worth the price! It’s advertised that you can see the llamas at breakfast but they weren’t around the gardens either, there was just one rabbit. We hadn’t told the kids about the possibility of seeing animals as we were going to surprise them, but others may have. 
A few reviews have mentioned the road noise and you can definitely hear trucks and other traffic, however personally this because more white noise than anything, but I can see why it would frustrate some. 
All in all the stay was..fine. There was nothing particularly terrible, but I don’t think it was worth £280. We probably wouldn’t stay again.

Average at best

I am staying here for two nights with my boyfriend (half Peruvian)and my parents. We are in the Inca and Aztec rooms respectively.

Positives: there aren’t many to be honest! The staff when we met them were pleasant and the decor of the room could certainly be described as “quirky“.

Negatives: this hotel describes itself as 5 stars, which might be accurate if it was out of 100. The room was quite unclean and included a cherry stone  left there by presumably a previous guest. If you’re hoping to see some llamas in this hotel which is named after them, you will be disappointed. We saw some for about 20 seconds when a kind member of staff was bringing them in from a trek, but we haven’t seen any since.However, if you’re into spiders then there’s plenty of those. I had a bit of a nightmare with the shower as it completely flooded the whole bathroom when I used it and the room looks directly out onto the main A-road on which this hotel is situated. If you’re a light sleeper this is not the place for you. Due to the location we were not able to walk into Penrith as it’s too dangerous to walk on the dual carriageway, so you have to drive everywhere. The decor is questionable. Think less “condor soaring over Machu Picchu“ and more “teenage girl let loose in Poundstretcher“. as I had booked this as a present for my parents 60th and felt that I done a good amount of research, I was really disappointed overall by this place. The website is very misleading and I don’t know how it got so many good reviews. This whole place kind of gives you the feel that someone bought some llamas a few years ago and then they’ve just milked it for all it’s worth ever since. What Joe Exotic is to tigers this place is to llamas.

Conclusion: I don’t like leaving bad reviews but this place is absolutely not worth the money, wouldn’t recommend I’m afraid. Not sure the Coronavirus pandemic can be used as an excuse either because having now looked at other bad reviews of this place there seem to be some common themes.

I’m really hoping for a defensive and lengthy response from management peppered by inappropriate question marks, and if the complaint is made that customers should give businesses a chance to respond in the moment, we will be leaving tomorrow so there’s still time.

Very disappointing, avoid 

I was soooo looking forward to staying here. I think I hyped myself up too much as I was left feeling a bit disappointed. We stayed in the aztec room. The bed was comfy. The room was clean.
Our coffee pod machine had a used pod in it and no new ones to use. And we could hear every loud footstep from the people above us. 
It wasn't a terribly bad experience. But it wasn't worth the money we paid.

On a separate note. Please come here to visit the cafe or walk the llama's. Its amazing!

Quirky overnight stay

Stayed here for 3 nights as the website and earlier reviews on here had me hooked. However things are no longer as they seem. This review may seem a little harsh in places but it may help people choose in lieu of the website being updated or made clearer, so here goes..
Pros:
The location is perfect, easily accessible from the motorway and Penrith on the doorstep. The room was lovely and clean and warm. Definately quirky- in a good way. The wetroom was lovely, a little scary using the sink after someone had had a shower due to the wet floor but not too bad. (the underfloor heating didnt seem to make any difference)The TV had a good variery of channels. It was lovely and quiet, I did not notice the road noise although it was very close, but ear plugs were provided if it is a probem. The beds were very comfy. The room was very accessible for my mum's walker. The Wifi connection was very good and connected easily

Cons: There is nowhere on site to get breakfast much earlier than 9am. The folder said 8, the sign on the kiosk said 8.30 but only one morning was it open that early. 8.45 and 9 the other 2 mornings. There is no fridge in the room.(even though the folder says fresh milk in the fridge) The patio doors are the only way in and have a "mirror"finish. the folder say you cannot be seen from outside. Oh yes you can. in daylight you can see if you look closely, with the light on you can see whats going on very clearly. So.. close the curtains and shut out the view- despite what the folder says!

the misleading. Website gives the impression that the cafe is open including a gov.uk video on what they had done to reopn. It is not. You have to be served through a window . There is an outdoor seating area with one table under a gazebo. Food is served in takeway containers, not very enviro friendly. I cant believe they cannot make a cafe that size covid secure (I felt it was more dont want to!)  The animals on the day we looked consisted on 1 rabbit, 1 money, 2 ferrets and 2 very unhappy looking llamas pacing up and down constantly looking over the wall as wanting to go back to their barn. I am sure they are well looked after as they looked in good condition, but they did not seem to like their little paddock.
In the list of "don'ts  in the folder t says there are electronic candles provided for ambience. there was not. We didnt make a fuss of that just got some from the nearby B+M. 
the website highlights"Save £s book direct"I did. There was no change to the price on the booking site, and no discount for 3 nights. They also did not pass on the Government's reduction in VATfor the room or breakfast so they have pocketed an extra £45 from our booking! We both thought that £100 per night room only was a bit on the high side. If it was an episode of 4 in the bed I would not have left the full amount.
So overall did we have a good stay- overall yes we did, and we can say we have stayed there.Would we return? IF it was B+B then yes possibly if we were in the area. for room only- no. I would stay in a caravan/lodge with facilites for the same price or less. 

PS Since the draft of this was written whilst still on site the website has had some amendments addressing some (but not all) of the issues above) - for this I have increased my rating.
