DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL I booked through hotels.com. Unfortunately due to the pandemic my trip was cancelled .. I contacted February 2021 and said we would be there 15th October which they acknowledged . Contacted them just to make sure all was ok (thank goodness I did). I was told it was closed for refurbishment.. I have asked for a refund as I have had to pay considerably more and this has been refused ., I will be contacting trading standards !! Load of rubbish !!!

Do not book with them !!

My husband and I booked to go to this hotel in October, we were looking forward to seeing the sites in Edinburgh and enjoying some lovely lunches and meals. Unfortunately Scotland locked down and all restaurants that we had booked cancelled our reservation as they were all having to close, EasyJet refunded us, the transport bus we booked from Edinburgh Airport to hotel refunded us, car parking at Gatwick gave us a voucher but when we contacted this hotel and asked for vouchers, they refused. They said that it was non refundable, we explained that we did not want to visit Edinburgh when everything would be closed and that we were not asking for a refund but if we could have vouchers so we could visit at a later date when COVID restrictions were not in place. They simply refused, we lost our money. We cannot wait to visit Edinburgh but due to the unhelpful manner of this hotel we would never book with this hotel again. Do yourselves a favour and stay clear of this hotel. There are plenty of hotels in Edinburgh that would have dealt with this so differently, really wished we read the reviews before booking.

We lost our money - do not book with this hotel

I booked a three night stay for my wife’s birthday and we were due to travel to Edinburgh in October but because of the heightened lockdown arrangements in Scotland, including Edinburgh, we are unable to travel.  This hotel said that the terms and conditions meant that the money was lost with no option of a refund or vouchers for a subsequent booking date.  The degree of inflexibility was very unfair and distressing and frankly a disgrace.  I would never consider this hotel again because of their lack of compassion and understanding during a worldwide pandemic. £173  has been lost yet the impact on their reputation may well cost them a lot more !!

No option of vouchers or refund during covid times

Stayed recently with a friend and whilst the hotel itself is very tired - threadbare carpets, lights that don't work, doors that don't lock, amongst other things - the staff were absolutely lovely.  Particularly one of the young Scottish man who worked on reception (I wish I knew his name!).  The hotel is in a handy location, a 20 min walk from all the sights and whilst we were on the ground floor right at the front of the hotel the street was very quiet.  
Looking back at the 'gallery' photos of the hotel, it looks incredibly different and I'm surprised at how grim our room was in comparison to the photos.  Would recommend if you're looking for a cheap stay and are not going to be in the room much.

Average hotel but lovely staff

Booked a stay for three nights at the Ballantrae Albany over this past weekend and was very pleasantly surprised with the spacious room with the high ceilings. Very comfortable beds and quiet hotel which allowed for a peaceful night's sleep! Fantastic location and within walking distance of all the attractions in Edinburgh!

Little gem in Edinburgh!

This place may have been a nice boutique hotel years ago but now it is run an a budget, low quality place. My room was Ok, bit tired, but clean. 

Breakfast was in a gloomy, dirty basement and there is no cooked/hot food, just a completely Covid unsafe buffet.  Nothing fresh - the croissants are those mini vacuum packed ones that are rubbery and taste of plastic.  Orange juice was like battery acid.  Horrible.  

Premier Inn is same price and so much better.

Entered the building and st in reception for 10 minutes as it wasn't manned. A member of staff finally turned up and appeared disgruntled he had to deal with us, not even a hello. We were in room 203 right next to the main door, doors have to be locked manually from the inside as its a proper key to open them initially, not saying its a bad thing just unusual in 2020. While the room was fairly quiet being next to the front door I can imagine post COVID it would be a nightmare noise wise. Room was freezing, heating wasn't in overnight and it dropped to zero overnight. Room was clean and large to be fair, but the shower had a large amount of black mould, four star tho???
Parking outside needs to be paid mon to sat. I was a bit concerned about the camera across the road looking straight into the hotel, we kept the curtains drawn when we noticed!
OK to get your head down but not 4 star by any stretch.


Not a 4 star

As per all my reviews my opinion and try to be fair and honest in all or it does not help anyone.
Would not return as clearly run down with little regard for guests.
The room was tiny and poor. Doors on cupboard hanging off should never have let a guest in there. Windows as shown as well as the walls. I just do not understand the industry as being from a customer service and law background I would not let someone into this room as this is the result.

Breakfast room was devoid of anything remotely like atmosphere and very basic indeed.

Location is great but given current circumstances either you are open for business or decide not to open if half measures in place.

The depicted images are not a true interpretation something I am finding so often in the travel industry the reality is far removed from what we are shown.

Overnight stay 

Stayed here on a 3 night visit to Edinburgh. Room was nice, location of the hotel is very good, beds were very comfortable (slept like a baby!), selection of teas were available in the room, good sized flat screen tv, good shower pressure and room was very clean when we arrived. There was no daily housekeeping due to covid-19 measures (although this can be requested), internet is free but didn’t always get a good internet signal in the bedroom and there were two loose/broken floor tiles in the bathroom. I would consider staying here again in the future.

Conveniently located

Booked thinking this was 4 star but it is far from it more like 1 or 2 star. Receptionist needed his shirt ironed and was zero help directions for the room were go through there and look out for it. the bedroom was ok except the whole room seemed to slope towards the door. Bed was not the comfiest. Bathroom was tiny, toilet roll holder hanging off the wall the shower tray wouldnt drain away, there was no fan to take steam away and mould on the shower tray. Breakfast wasnt the best, an assortment of cereals, some ham, salmon, cheese, boiled egg but no bread the waitress brings you 1 slice of brown and 1 slice of white toast. very poor for a supposed 4 star hotel.
