We had issue after issue when we stayed at The Greenman. In chronological order:

A week or two before arriving, I tried contacting them by telephone to add dinner to our booking. I got through to an answering service. Over the following days, I tried several times each day, all with the same result. I left voice messages, but received no response. In total, I tried to reach them by phone 15-20 times, all with no result. By then it was already pretty clear that something was seriously amiss there. 

We were on a walking holiday, and on the afternoon of our arrival I was sweaty and much in need of a shower. However, there was no hot water! Staff put the water heater on boost, and in the event I had to wait about 20 minutes to take my shower.

In the meantime, I thought I’d make use of the time by having a shave. However, the sink plug was ineffective and the sink retained no water. 

When I was eventually able to take my shower, the water backed up in the shower tray to the point that it started to leak over the floor, this due to a partially blocked drain.

Having taken my shower and dressed, I needed to catch up with my emails. However, there was no wifi signal in our room (Room 14). Or, to the extent that there may have been, the wifi was so slow as to be completely unusable. 

Dinner that evening was mercifully good. However, on returning to our room, we were shocked by loud stomping noises coming from the room above. In fact, the guests in that room were using it properly - the noise was due to the fact that their floor / our ceiling is so lightweight and flimsy that every noise and footstep could be heard at full volume. 

We delayed going to bed until the guests upstairs had themselves gone to bed. There would have been no point in turning in earlier - it would’ve been impossible to sleep. 

Upon eventually going to bed and turning out the lights, we realised that the room was lit by a low green light. The reason? There’s a permanently-on illuminated fire escape sign on the bedroom side of the door!

We finally managed to get to sleep against all the odds. However, it was a broken night’s sleep because we were overheating all night thanks to there being a winter weight duvet on the bed - totally inappropriate for the season we were in. For security reasons, we were also unable to have the window open overnight - we were in a ground floor room, yet anyone could have entered the room via the window.

We were only staying the one night, and left the next morning to continue our walking holiday. Prior to checking out, we went to the reception to collect the packed lunch that we’d ordered the previous evening. We were told that the kitchen had no record of a packed lunch having been ordered - this despite the fact that the person with whom we’d placed our order the previous evening had made a point of writing a note for the kitchen whilst we were standing beside him. Being that we were continuing our walk on a Sunday morning and nowhere else was open, we had to do without lunch.

Bottom line - the staff were friendly and pleasant, and the dinner was good. Every other aspect of our stay was a shocker. On checking out, I told the person on the desk that I’d be lodging this complaint. He kindly deducted the cost of our dinner from the bill. However, I’d much rather have had a convenient stay and a decent night’s sleep. 

An absolute shocker

We drove past The Greenman purely by chance and decided to call in as we were looking to find somewhere to have a drink and something to eat.
Upon entering we were warmly welcomed by the very enthusiastic and helpful chaps on duty and swiftly served with coffee and cake which we enjoyed whilst sitting in their lovely secluded garden area making the most of the late afternoon sunshine.
As we were so impressed with the surroundings and the friendly attitude of the staff we enquired about having dinner and they promptly set about finding us a table for a party of eight people at short notice as we continued to enjoy drinks in the garden for a couple of hours whilst waiting for the kitchens to open.
We took our seats in the restaurant and the service was excellent from the moment we sat down until the time we left and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals.
The wonderful welcoming attitude of the staff along with the excellent food would make us very keen for a return visit and thoroughly recommend a visit to The Greenman. 


What a pleasure to find a place this good.

All round an excellent place to stay with my three dogs.  I had their dog room and it was an annexe out in the courtyard.  Fairly easy access via the car park to a huge grassy path that led straight to the recreation ground and river walks.

Staff were helpful and cheerful throughout even when some staff Sbsence caught them out. 

Rooms were well appointed and bathrooms new and spotless.

Food was good all weekend

Excellent!  Great weekend.

The room was quite small even though we paid more for an upgrade. Bed was very comfortable, staff were very helpful. not much choice on the evening meal menu and quite pricey,  the building is lovely, very old with a lot of history. Great location for surrounding towns and villages 

Mini break 

Our stay at The Greenman was excellent, we arrived several hours before check in due to an excursion we had in the local area - we had put in an early check in request prior to arrival and it was met, allowing us to drop off our bags and freshen up before heading out. We also made a request to change one of the rooms to a twin before we left, which was dealt with straight away and was ready when we came back. When we returned we mentioned we would be interested in dining but hadn’t booked a table in advance, this was no issue as residents are always made room for. We had a three course meal which was delicious and great value for money, three of us had the beef and it was exceptional. We drank in the bar area which was comfortable and cosey, the whole venue was decorated in a way that was both charming and refined. The beds were comfortable and the rooms in general were nicely laid out and spacious - it had the feel of a country house but had the modern comforts of a hotel. One room had a bath and the other had a shower so would be good to specify in your booking if you have a preference which I am sure would be accommodated if possible. The following morning we had breakfast which was included in the price, there were several hot options (one per guest) as well as a small continental buffet available which had several cereal options, yoghurts, toast, pasties and some fruit. Tea and coffee were brought to the table on request in pots / cafetières with no limit. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. Overall it was a great stay and we would highly recommend and would also use the venue again ourselves!

Perfect Little Find

We were invited to a 60, 70,& 80s night by a couple of our friends on Saturday the 14th January, from the moment we arrived were made very welcome in a beautiful pub, the night was held in a very nice backroom that was very well laid out, part of the evening was a superb buffet to which myself and my wife though way above average, nicely presented fresh and a well thought out I was asking who made this who prepared that it was that good, the two girls who entertained us for the evening were very professional and sounded great singing an arrangement of songs from the best music years in my opinion, I Had a chat with the host Gemma a very young lady who had organised the evening, she was polite knowledgeable and you could tell by her enthusiasm she enjoyed her work and that was so nice to see, I have visited the Green man on many occasions but I felt so strong about the evening we enjoyed so much I would write this review,

A BIg 👏👏👏👏 to all who made the evening special, so nice to see that with the right people in the jigsaw what can be achieved and see you again soon,

Wonderful evening

we stayed here for our 10th wedding anniversary, The greenman is full of character, well decorated. First up all the staff where friendly and welcoming, we didn't have long to wait for anything. we booked a deluxe double room but upon our arrival we were given a very spacious apartment, what a treat was blown away, it was absolutely lovely. loved the shower. food in the evening was delicious, hot and a nice sized portion. In fact the best steak I've had in a long time, shortly after followed by dessert. After a very nice comfortable sleep the cooked breakfast didn't disappoint. To be honest we couldn't fault the place and will defiantly return.Once again the staff were great. 😊

Lovely stay.

My dad and I stayed here for one night. There was initially a problem with the room which the staff dealt with immediately. The room was spacious, nice bath and full of character. The food was very good for both dinner and breakfast. The staff were attentive and friendly and the hotel is full of character and stories of the past. We did give some feedback upon check out - our room was extremely hot and there was a generator/ Unit immediately down on the exterior wall which was noisy. The two combined affected sleep somewhat but in no way did it ruin our stay so if you book it may be worth avoiding room 3. However that aside we couldn’t actually fault the place and will return in the future. We had a lovely time

Nice place, welcoming staff and decent food!

Just 20mins outside the centre of Hereford we found this hotel met all our expectations.
Tasty decorated in a style befitting the age of the building it oozed character. 
Importantly, a big shout out for all the staff. Friendly, engaging, all round they made the stay a very pleasant one! 
(We were a party of five) 
Rooms very comfortable, shower excellent.
Food in restaurant both in the evening meal and at breakfast tasty, hot, and delicious.
As it was January we didn’t use the outside terrace but that look nice too.

Character Inn

The green man was always our ‘go to’ for a special family or friends meal - the service polite and unobtrusive and food excellent / but our most recent visit was very disappointing - service and food are well below par - we could have been in a cafe ‘alright luv’ 
Nothing wrong with cafes but the green man used to stand head and shoulders above all others.  
This is a great shame.
