We were staying locally in the area and stumbled across this gem as we were on a search for a pub quiz. We had a great evening and the landlady couldn’t be more accommodating. The locals were lovely and it was dog friendly. It’s a shame we ran out of time on our holiday as we would have loved to come back and enjoy the food.

Hidden gem

Stayed at the Royal Oak for two nights in July with family and it was amazing. Rooms were super comfortable and really well equipped, also far bigger than we expected and completely quiet, tucked away from the pub. We also had access to the garden in the mornings which was beautiful. Perfect location for us, plenty to do and explore in the local area. We've been coming to the pub for a while but it's the first time we stayed and so pleased we did - it won't be the last! Food and beer at the pub both delicious as usual and the breakfasts were spot on. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Perfect stay. Will return. 

This lovely old traditional inn was a great base to explore Offa’s Dyke path for a couple of nights. The accommodation is perfect for two couples, it is quiet and comfortable, with modern colours; thoughtfully appointed but still very much part of the inn’s history. The inn has brilliant local beer, cider and gin, along with ancient charm. It has no equal as place to unwind after a long day’s walk. Or for just 20mins climb up Offa’s path you well be rewarded with a stunning 330 view of Gladestry and surroundings, a highlight of all our walks. After all that exercise the freshly cooked dinners, excellent breakfast and hospitality from Sarah and family are the perfect way to recharge for the next days challenge. 

A true gem of a pub

We called in to The Royal Oak for Sunday lunch as a break whilst walking the Offa's Dyke path. The roast dinner was superb and excellent value for money. There was a generous portion of meat, accompanied by pretty much every vegetable imaginable! Absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend. 

Superb Sunday lunch 

Highly recommend this gem. Super comfortable bed. Really nice hostess Sara was sa lovely kind helpful. Super breakfast. Terrific garden. Gladestry is a lovely little village everyone so friendly. Ideal place to recharge and rest and relax.

Excellent place to stay

A lovely old pub with extremely tasty, proper homemade food; we had a very enjoyable dinner and breakfast next day.  We were warmly welcomed and the room was very well decorated, spotless, and with a nice little seating area.  I knew in advance (I'd been warned and told to look at photos) that the headroom in the bedroom and particularly the bathroom was limited due to it being a loft conversion with a beam.  I wanted to be on the Offa's Dyke trail or very close, so took a chance, only one night after all.  My husband is very tall - over 6'3"- and I'm hardly short at 5'7", but even after reviewing the pictures and given we're seasoned at camping and caravanning, it was worse than anticipated.  The bathroom is the difficulty unless you happen to be only 5' or less.  There's almost nowhere to rest your wash bag or even use the lavatory without negotiating that beam and of course we both got bashed a few times.  It's such a shame given how lovely everything else was.  I think that perhaps a reduction in the room rate would've been appropriate, since it wasn't the cheapest on the trip by any means, pretty expensive in fact.

Lovely pub and bang on the trail, just mind your head

My wife and I were on our Honeymoon thru-hike of the Offa's Dyke Path. We were so happy that we had booked an overnight stay at The Royal Oak. The room was fantastic. We both loved the sitting area separate from the bedroom. 
When we took the short walk down the hallway (who doesn't love a pub attached to your accommodation!) we were pleasantly surprised to have a "reserved" sign on the best table in the pub located next to the cosy fireplace. Our dinner was fantastic and we both loved the friendly pub atmosphere. In the morning the breakfast was equally outstanding. It was actually difficult to say goodbye to the proprietors Sarah and Dave. They felt like friends in the short time that we knew them. We highly recommend staying at The Royal Oak and if you are heading north enjoy the morning hike along the Hergest Ridge.

A wonderful stay while hiking the Offa's Dyke Path

Had 2 great nights here, room well equipped and good standard.   Food excellent, best Hunters chicken I've eaten and husbands steak cooked exactly as requested. Breakfast offers a nice range to choose from and set you up for your day.  Lots of local info from the hosts, glad we tried the suggested walk for the stunning view.  We are not long distance walkers but felt there was plenty of options to suit all abilities.  The beer garden to relax in on an evening was an added bonus.  All staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful  Easily could have spent more than 2  nights here.

Loved our stay

We passed through Gladestry on our way to Hay-on-Wye for holiday, opting for a cider and some lunch each at this premises.   The pub itself was fairly quiet at 1pm (ish) but this was a weekday and maybe due to the rural setting.   Special mention to Emily working in the pub as she was extremely attentive, spoke to us at great length about all manner of things, and she was a ray of sunshine and brightness with her demeanour and attitude.   Truly lovely person.  The Cider I requested was off-tap as it had ran out, but I was recommended a different local Cider and this was very nice.   We both opted for Steak Sandwich, Chips and Salad.   The salad was fine.  The chips were kind of home style chips, slightly soggy and could have been more crispy.   The steak sandwich had gorgeous malted/grained thick bread, but the steak itself although tasty was a little fatty.   It was nothing to complain about as such however given the price point, and we both finished our meals stating it was nice.   The portion size was actually brilliant.  The open fire was so comfortable as we sat right by it.  We were invited to the evening Darts gathering (sorry we couldn't attend) and the England rugby match also.   We never got chance to return to the pub during our 4 days in Herefordshire, but it is testament to you that we said that we would have returned, and will return if we ever pass through again.   Please do not see 3/5 as a disappointing score.  We were very pleased with the service, the conversation and the homeliness.  It is simply that the quality of the food didn't wow us being well travelled and having eaten out loads, and we understand it maybe isn't meant to.  We will return if ever down that way again.  Keep hold of Emily, she is a treasure.

Holiday Weekday Lunch

If I could give more stars I would give them more. Our experience was magnificent. Sahra and Dave were the perfect hosts. Beyond a simple room to sleep. They took care of the smallest detail to make my husband, my children and I feel good. 

From a stair gate for my children to be safe in the living room, to a selection of stories, games, coloring paper and pencils, and Halloween gifts. The rooms of the B&B are made with high quality standards. Super cosy and modern. At the bottom is the "Pub / restaurant", and a small shop that offers everything you need. 

During our stay we had breakfast and dinner, and we really can't complain. Each of the dishes we ate were delicious. Our breakfasts were always super complete, with a great variety of cereals, fruit, yogurt, sausages, eggs, mushrooms, beans, etc. . The dinners were delicious and full of flavour. We have no words to thank you for all your attentions. We will definitely go back soon. 😉
