I haven't had an overnight stay in an actual pub in many a long year..but on the way back from an antiques hunting trip to Lincolnshire, my wing-man & I wanted somewhere to stop over on the way back to Hampshire, that was near to Sawbridgeworth's myriad Antiques Centres on the Herts/Essex border, so we could drop in there on the last day of our 'hunt..!

....and a Google search showed up the Fox Inn in Matching Tye as offering accommodation.. and being about a 15 minute drive from that locale.. a booking was made.

Glad it was, for when we bowled up on a dark, cold early Winter's evening, (unusual for us as our annual trip is usually in Spring or high Summer, to what appeared to be a completely blacked-out village..no street lights in this neck of the woods!.. The Fox appeared shut..but a knock on the front door elicited a warm welcome from the young landlord.

We were quickly show our rooms..a smashing modern wooden 'stable block' out back with a range of very comfortable & spotlessly clean rooms..and once we had mastered the central hearing fans in each of our rooms... very warm too, on such a cold evening!

The interior of the pub itself, when we went in for our evening meal, was cracking: all wood  & low oak-beamed ceilings..just as an old Essex pub should look. 👌

A superb plate of fish & chips later was followed by a very friendly hour or two at the bar, ( the pub is a Free House, which is always a bonus), and, coming from one very small village as I do, I felt very much at home & most welcome in this small village pub.

Breakfast, back in the bar after a comfortable night, was also most enjoyable: well prepared, hot & served with a flourish and this certainly set us up for the return home leg of our trip via the nearby Sawbridgworth Antiques Emporia..

All-in-all, a smashing overnight stay at a most welcoming pub, thank you so much! 👍

A lovely old Essex pub..!

Stayed at this place to attend a family wedding nearby. Cannot fault it the rooms where clean well decorated and spacious  they are in the form of small chalets behind the main building and have everything you would require for a comfortable stay including air-conditioning which was good in the hot weather. A continental breakfast is included in the room but we decided to take advantage of the restraunt for a cooked breakfast at extra cost and could not fault it  nor could we fault the evening meal we had on our day of arrival. The food was excellent  and the staff outstanding nothing was too much trouble and they  couldn't have been more pleasant . All in all couldn't have asked for anything more for the price . Would definitely recommend a visit to this quaint little pub / hotel

Lovely stay after a long journey 

We hired 5 rooms to attend a local wedding. The rooms were great. Clean, comfy and well-priced. Nice and quiet at night. 
All the staff were fabulous. Food in the pub was lovely. Breakfasts were very tasty too. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it!

Great value and comfortable 

We stayed in room 2 for one night as we booked a meal at the smiths of Ongar. On arrival we were shown our room (thats the first time we've had that), & shown how & were everything was. We did notice a small issue in the bathroom so contacted a member staff who PROMPTLY came out & rectifyed it extreamly quickly. The room was very clean and had everything we needed. Including an A/C unit which was a lovely touch. The breakfast was in a bag that was included in the price and that was very nice with the option of a cooked breakfast on request on arrival. We booked a cooked breakfast for 09:00 it well cooked and tasty & very good value for money. All the staff were very friendly & very helpful. Its a must if you are in the area. We will definitely book to stay again.

A wonderful stay

We recently stayed at The Fox Inn for our son's wedding at Blakehall. Liz and the team were superb, they couldn't have been more helpful ,nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms were comfortable,clean and inviting, the food was good quality and excellent value.

Fantastic

Came here for lunch today. First visit even though we live in next village. Had lunch here. Was delicious. Great traditional pub Fayre that was all fresh and homemade. Great portion size and great value for money. Boycott the bigger chain pubs and support the independents. Friendly staff. Had a CAMRA 5 star for beer which I agree was outstanding with their cask ale Atlantic going down a treat. Kids well fed also. Staff friendly and for fresh served food and a busy lunch it didn’t take long to arrive. So 5 stars

Top notch fox

Lovely pub, with great people and lovely food! Stayed overnight in one of their lovely rooms! Very clean and tidy and the breakfast goody bag is a great idea. Would definitely recommend to anyone that’s in the area.

Great Place

Nice staff. Nice surroundings. Have eaten here a few times now. Meal  was very expensive for what was served. I had chicken fajitas that came with no side order of salad or chips. Two wraps - large but little fillings of chicken, cheese and sauces. I was charged £14 for this! Disappointing.
I don’t normally have dessert but was still peckish.i and husband ordered popcorn sundae each- £5.95. Another big disappointment. It was not a sundae- a couple of scoops of ice cream, a single ‘cigar shape’ wafer and a scattering of popcorn. I feedback to the waitress with no resolve. 
I won’t be rushing back here.

Expensive for what it is

Charming and inviting 18th century pub set in the peaceful village of Matching Tye, with what look like old wooden barns located to the rear which have been converted into basic chalet style rooms set around a courtyard with seating.

My ensuite room was spacious and nice & clean, with a double bed. Free wifi, freeview TV, tea & coffee making facilities, & mini fridge (which I switched off as it was so noisy & was disturbing my sleep).

The only reason I have only given a four star rating is the breakfast which was sitting in a paper bag in my room when I arrived & was a bit of a let down. OJ, porridge to make yourself, a cereal bar & a muffin to be eaten in your room wasn't the most inspiring or healthiest start to the day, although a cooked breakfast is available in the pub but it will cost you extra.

Clean cosy room

I have stayed at the Fox Inn several times; always a great experience.  It's situated in a small village in the countryside.  The accommodations are clean and comfortable, the food is excellent, the real ale is perfect, the garden is large, and the staff is friendly.  I look forward to my next visit!
