We have been to this hotel a few times. 

We had the best welcome from the most adorable Tess!  What a little ray of sunshine.  She makes you feel welcome as soon as you arrive and continues throughout your stay.
If you want is a great base 100 yards from the beach and traditional local Hope Cove - this is where to come!

They do everything to make you feel welcome and catered for!  

Then there's the owner, Ian.  He's a local of forever!  When you get to know him, he is the most brilliant warm person!  He is dry, funny and he will give you a great full English breakfast with produce from his very own farm. Also, the Sand Pebbles Sunday roast is amazing! The biggest, lightest Yorkshire pudding we've ever tasted!

Dog friendly, not that we have one, but we fell in love with Maddie and Bess.  

Keep Hope Cove how it is supposed to be, which is quaint and lovely.  Don't expect luxury, just expect a great welcome.

Friendly local run business

Just come back from this hotel and never mind what other reviews say we loved it ok it's not a luxury hotel but the experience outways that ,the staff are absolutely brilliant its luke being at home theres no restrictions on where or what you can do most of the guest had dogs and they are ok to go where they want .our sea view room was clean warm and a cracking view. Nothing was too much trouble, breakfast and dinner was lovely and tess made our stay, remembering all the guests and dogs names all in all a lovely little place .

Little gem

After searching for an hour for somewhere to have a glass of wine, you have to book or queue due to Covid restrictions, we found this hotel in Hope Cove. We were greeted so warmly by bright bubbly Tess and made to feel so welcome that I felt compelled to write this review. 
How refreshing it was to be welcomed, whilst all Covid rules were adhered to, in such a positive way. We were shown to a table near a window in a sunny spot. The service was cheerful and energetic with a can do attitude which is rare. Thank you Tess and Sand Pebbles for a lovely afternoon. We will be back x

A warm friendly welcome

Stayed here for one night whilst walking the SWCP. For £90 I expected a lot more. On arrival, late afternoon, no one in reception, keys just left with room number 17 to find. Room was horrible. Small, scruffy, outdated. Shower room, dimly lit, tatty, something out of the 70’s, 80’s. Only thing in it a half filled dispenser of liquid on sink. No other toiletries.
Went out as soon as I could down to Hope Cove to find somewhere else to eat.
Couldn’t wait to leave the next morning. Very disappointed, poor value for money.

If the smell of chip aroma and threadbare carpets is what you are looking for stay here ! 
In fairness laundry and room was fine - They allow dogs  and its well situated only 250 yds from the beach/coast
its just tired (like the owners) Its a time warp  Go with low expectations and you will be fine  Breakfast was fine 

Welcome back to the 70's

Hotel is well worn and in need of updating and redecoration.  Price is reasonable. En suite shower light not working but otherwise room was rather tacky but adequate.
Very disappointing on food - particularly as the local pub (Hope & Anchor) closed due to flooding last year and so very little options for eating out in the evening. On the first night, menu not even offered and told "roast pub or fish & chips are only options", despite at least 14 guests being resident. Had to ask for side plates at every meal. On breakfast first morning - the most disgusting dirty HP Sauce bottle offered that tasted like a blend of BBQ sauce and vinegar - definitely NOT HP Sauce. At breakfast, unless one asked for "hot water" in the teapot - it was warm only and tea therefore weak. On second night, menu offered but told that three of the fish dishes were all off.  The table was unhygienic and had not been cleaned from night before - crumbs and sauce spots all over the table. This happened too at breakfast the next day.
Overall:  the landlady was pleasant and cheerful but landlord lethargic.  This could be a good venue if only attention to detail and communication were improved.

Lethargic service and poor food hygiene

Room was nice, clean, shower OK, sheets and bed linen clean,, always one or two minor things didn’t work like shaving light, but didn’t matter to me. Breakfast home cooked, I like it that way. Great position sun full on porch in morning, hillside and cliffs in view. Nice airy restaurant, very pleasant for breakfast on sunny side.

We stayed for 3 nights with our dog, we had family staying near by, so it was a b&b for us. Room was good & clean,  shower OK, a good choice on the breakfast menu, all freshly cooked  & the staff were lovely & friendly. The bar, lounge & reception area could do with a bit of a makeover, but on balance it ticked the boxes for us. An old fashioned 3 star hotel in a lovely seaside location, it isn't and does claim to be a boutique hotel and it isn't priced like one. The hotel seemed to be Covid compliant.

Better than some of the reviews

We're  staying literally round the corner. Decided to go here for a Sunday roast, i kind of 2ish we hadn't. I was the only one out of 4 adults that had a roast. The potatoes looked and tastes like they had been left over from last weekend. My other half is vegetarian and ordered a pesto pasta, this wasn't too bad. My dad ordered a burger that wasn't great and my mum ordered a chicken breast with mushrooms in a white wine sauce, she said that she actually questioned if it was cooked properly. I highly recommend, carry on walking down to the cove pub and eat there. Its easily a better choice.

Just for dinner

I have absolutely no idea how this place has any positive reviews. I’ve stayed in hotels all over the world, including many in very poor, 3rd world regions. 
Even without much money, owners that have pride in their establishment manage to shine. 

This place is an embarrassment to Devon and staycations. 

It’s disgusting, dirty, damp and full of unsafe rubbish. Emma seemed nice enough but clearly would struggle to keep a place this size clean and maintained. Ian seems like he really couldn’t give a damn. Outside genuinely looks like a rubbish dump - old broken bikes, washing machine, fence panels lots of debris, screws and nails - very unsafe, unsightly and unwelcoming. 

Inside the room was very very dirty and sticky. There is damp round the windows, doors, walls, bathroom, beds. The bath was dirty with black pubes, a hole in the floor and feels like it’s not been cleaned properly in years. 
The sofa bed is so disgusting it’s hard to describe. 
The other areas are all very dirty and seriously out of date. I can live with outdated - some say character - it’s hard to live with owners that have thrown the towel in that can’t be bothered to clean. 
If the bits you can see are so dirty, imagine how bad the bits are you can’t see🤢 when I complained to Ian, he was cooking breakfast - his hands look like he’s been mucking out cows and fixing an engine. Seriously, do not stay here. It’s not even cheap! There are plenty of guest houses, hotels and B&Bs around the area that appear to be clean and presentable.
