Firstly, the staff were excellent.  Friendly, helpful and obliging, especially the lady who we met on our arrival very late in the evening.  We enjoyed a very tasty evening meal and an excellent, well cooked, extensive breakfast the following morning.

The decor in our room was extremely tired and is in need of a major decoration. Despite that the room was clean, tidy and a good size.  The communal areas were also clean and tidy.  No doubt due to the efforts of the staff.  I've given 4 stars because, in its way, despite the flaws, it was an extremely pleasant stay.

Best thing though was the staff, all very welcoming and helpful. Mariana deserves a special mention for helping my partner find a pair of shoes after hers self destructed 30 mins before we were due to go out.

Little Gem, Brilliant Staff

The whole experience of staying here was exceptional. The building itself is beautiful and the staff were brilliant. Mariana and Sammy were really helpful and caring and couldn't do enough for us. The food was very special and presented beautifully. We felt like family. All in all, we can't wait to go back again. 

Absolutley beautiful stay with wonderful staff and food!!

Booked online. Easy to find off the main road but yet only a short drive or taxi ride to the centre of Ipswich. We arrived late but Marina was fantastic. Our room was clean, very tidy with comfortable adjustable heating. Nice big bath in the En-suite with a shower facility. Good selection of tv stations . Bar is small and quaint. We had fantastic meals during our stay, beautifully presented and more than adequate portions. Marina was so kind and helpful. A real asset to this Hotel and Best Western. All the other staff we met including the chefs were very nice, polite and chatty. I hope we get the opportunity to stay there again. We checked out late this morning . Once again Marina helped us.... she deserves a pay rise. As we left we met the Manager who was most courtious. A great little Hotel , you could easily dismiss it .... but stay there. Even for one night with an evening meal and breakfast..... You will want to go back.  Thank you from Clinton and Julie.

A Weekend Escape !

I found this place very strange to stay in. I was showed to a Room in a small outbuilding, this seemed to back on to the kitchens which I could hear lots of noise from. I can hear every manner of noise from the rooms next door and above me. I could even hear the chap above me snoring his head off as though he was in the same room and even going to the toilet! Bed was hard and lumpy and seen better days and did not aid a good nights sleep. Receptionist seemed to be check in/check out/ waitress/bar maid/ breakfast staff, just felt chaotic. No music in dining area so very quiet and no atmosphere.  Could also hear the few staff members there were complaining about the lack of staff and then not being replaced. Could be better and I’m afraid it’s not for me and would look elsewhere next time

A rather old hotel with needed facilities. building screams for an overhaul - mainly outside and roof.
Dinner was really excellent.All employees were very kind and service minded. Be aware that there is nothing going on within "walking" distance in the evening.

An overnight stay with great service and food

I was passing through the area and only stayed one night, but it was perfect for my needs.  My room was comfortable, and a bit spacious compared to what I expected from other English travels.  The bed was clean and comfortable.  There was an electric kettle with tea and instant coffee.  (not a fan of instant coffee, but that was only a minor ding)  

The only real complaint I had was the shower was incredibly loud.  It was warm and had great water pressure.  I really enjoyed it, but I feel confident my neighbors could all hear it running as well.  

The hotel is smaller, but laid out beautiful with old wooden panels.  It has a nice little bar and eating area.  I did not partake, but I heard other guests mention that they enjoyed their food. 

I would certainly stay here again and recommend it for anyone.

A wonderful spot to stay

Stayed here regulary and the standard of customer service never fails. always a friendly greeting and nothing too much trouble. the staff are joy and so friendly. 

The evening food is excellent value and well cooked

The breakfast is something else , freshly cooked and plentiful

The hotel is an old house and panelled in all pubic areas ...unfortunately bar area too small and cosy. 

the amazing star of the hotel is Marina who pops up all times of day from breakfast to late at night ...i am sure she must have a twin sister...she interacts so naturally will all guests

A fine home from home

Querky but great customer service

Stayed at the Gatehouse hotel. Hotel is only a short drive from the centre of Ipswich. The hotel is an eclectic mix of buildings sitting in 3 acres of grounds. The room we had was nice and modern but the best thing about the hotel was the very friendly and helpful staff and the excellent and I mean excellent food. Highly recommended

Great find in Ipswich

we recently had the misfortune to stay at this hotel one saturday. things didnt start well when we booked in and was confronted by an arrogrant eastern european receptionist who struggled with basic english. we were allocated room 2 ...supposely a delux room...well a broken sink and filthy curtains and windows. when we asked to see the manager was told by receptionist she was the manager and no other rooms available. we went for dinner to be a confronted by a drunk waitress called sal. food was okay but it seemed that there was an ongoing dispute about staff not being paid which was being discussed loudly by the chef and sal in the kitchen which could be heard by us and other guests it was embrassing . breakfast was good. this hotel has potential  but spoilt by noise from kitchen as there was some sort of row between chef and the receptionist. Hotel has potential but is mismanaged
