We had a lovely 3 night stay and liked how close it was to restaurants, pubs and cafes. It was also 5 min walk from the ferry. The breakfast was good and the room was cosy and warm. The host was welcoming. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. All we needed as a base for our hiking holiday.

Lovely holiday

This hotel is in the perfect location 5 minutes away from the ferry terminal but unfortunately we did not have a pleasant stay. The place itself is very dated and smells of dampness and the smell of dampness only worsened inside of our room. There was damp spots coming through the paint  which made us think the dampness had just been painted over and left. There was also a soaking wet rug on the floor covering up an iron mark and the floor could have been doing with a good hoover as it was covered in dirt. Our private toilet was located down the hall adjacent to another bedroom which was less than ideal and not exactly private as anyone could easily access it. The bathroom itself could be doing with a good clean and there was a slug making its way up one of the walls. The bedroom was also freezing despite it being pretty hot weather outside and any clothes I hung in the wardrobe were freezing cold to touch and slightly damp. The host seemed pleasant enough but we never really saw her throughout our stay and at the end she didn't even ask how our stay was. Its such a shame as the location was a major draw for us but we definitely wont be back, there is much better accommodation in Arran

Damp and Dated

We were very disappointed in our stay here on what is a beautiful island.  The room smelled of dampness and the house in general had a musty smell.  The bedding left a lot to be desired due to it's condition and age.

There was no hot water from the wash hand basin although the shower worked.  The lid on the kettle was broken and there was a piece missing from the bottom of the kettle leaving an exposed wire.

The host was pleasant and breakfast was OK although the crockery showed signs of great wear and tear.

We could not recommend Strathwhillan House which is in need of serious refurbishment in our opinion.

Damp and musty

I have stayed here before so knew what to expect. The room was comfortable and the bathroom had a good shower. The host is pleasant and friendly and provides a good breakfast. The b&b is situated a 5minute walk up a hill from the ferry terminal. here is of street parking. I would certainly stay here again if on Arran.

Second visit to this B&B

Less than 5 minutes away from the ferry terminal. The room was clean and cozy with the usual commodities. The bathroom was bigger that what we expected, very clean and next to the room. Its the perfect place to relax after enjoy the beauty of the island

Perfect relaxing stay

Really needs a complete makeover, so dull furniture something out the early 1900s, smell of dampness in room, bedding certainly not Egyptian cotton in fact more like cheapest you could buy, although the bed was comfy enough, breakfast pre order, sausage cheap, would I stay here again, not unless they they rip it out and start again, had a room at the back which looked onto someone back garden, not a pretty site, should cut back bushes at the front so you can get a view of the beautiful scenery. 

Horrible 

While the building looks nice and the location is good the room we stayed in was old , tired and damp , paint was needed , damp needed sorted on the windows and walls , toilet was poorly laid out and cramped , sit on the toilet and burn yourself on the radiator ( when it was actually on !. A good paint , heat and clean would be a good start ..
On a good point the owner was nice and helpful and breakfast was very good .  For the money it wasn't the most costly bit still not worth 90 quid

In need of an upgrade

Recently had a 4 night stay in Strathwhillan house, soon as we walked in the smell of dampness was overpowering. Room 1 was big enough but the smell of dampness continued inside the room. Net curtains had mould, curtains had a strong stench. Windows in room had to be open all the time to get fresh air. Room hasn't been cleaned in years, breakfast was OK in some parts but some items of food were inedible. Overall avoid this b&b, there are better alternatives elsewhere. When handing back the key no questions were asked about our stay. Needs to be renovated to get rid of the dampness and modernisation throughout.

Awful

As per the previous review, we were also pleasantly surprised by our stay at Strathwhillan House after reading some of the negative posts left on here by some guests.  We found the accommodation to be clean, dry and warm with ample facilities, including the provision of a fridge and towels and the usual kettle and accompaniments that you would expect to find in such establishments.  Our host, Charlotte, is a very kind and friendly lady who couldn't do enough for us and she made us feel very welcome.  Breakfast was perfectly cooked and brought at the time that we requested it.  Indeed, there was a more than generous selection on offer for breakfast that would rival any guesthouse that I ever stayed in.  The house itself could perhaps do with some modernisation if I were to be hypercritical, but, for the price, it was more than acceptable and I would definitely stay there again in the future.

Pleasantly surprised

Have to say we were dubious about coming here after reading previous reviews. 
However I really don’t know what people were complaining about. 
We received a txt from the owners before we arrived asking arrival time and if we needed directions - no directions needed , head out towards Lamlash from the boat and it’s almost 1st house you come to! 
We were welcomed by Charlotte and shown our room and facilities. 
The room was basic but had tea and coffee making facilities. It wasn’t en suite but we had a private bathroom just along the corridor which wasn’t a great issue tbh.
We also had use of a fridge freezer . 
There was a smell of damp as previously mentioned but it’s a very old house and again it wasn’t an issue .
Breakfast was served in time slots due to the current situation and was freshly cooked with plenty of tea and toast . There was also cereals yoghurts and juice.
We were only sleeping there as were out and about most of the days and the beds were clean and comfortable . 
Charlotte was very friendly and helpful. 
We could see the sea (just) from our room and a view of Goatfell 
So don’t be put off by the negative reviews. 
A holiday is what you make it !
