Good atmosphere. Seems to be used by regular hikers/climbers who after work on a Friday set off for the White Horse to be used as a pit stop/base camp for early Saturday morning ascents. The facilities were clean and the room was warm. The bathroom and kitchen were also of a good standard. For the price paid I'd 100% recommend. The only negative was the check-in/bar staff who were extremely rude. 

Good All-Round

We arrived very fatigued after an amazing winter traverse of the Blencathra.  We simply demanded hot, hearty and substantial foods.  

Staff very friendly.  I ordered roast pork loin, a friend went for the brisket and another the sirloin.  We were directed to a little snug off the main bar. We settled in. 

Positives:  my mate loved his brisket. It was cooked to perfection.  The sirloin went down well and my pork was fine. 

Less than positives:  the roasted potatoes were hard in the middle. My view is chef chose to cut them a bit too big and the insides couldn’t cook out.  The veg was also a bit dry and the Yorkshire puddings were mere husks. 

It was an average experience food wise.  Not the end of the world but I’m not sure we will return for food.  We will return for drinks next time we come off the hill.

Stopped by before a big day in the hills, couldn’t have been better! Really lovely staff, super friendly, delicious food and lovely atmosphere. After a snowy forecast we booked a last minute stay in their bunkhouse, which may have been the best decision we made! Great facilities. Would absolutely recommend!

Top pub, lovely food, staff and atmosphere!

Top quality table service from Aaron. 10/10. Also the best steak pie we’ve all ever had. Benchmarking for pies, no pie will be the same again. We will be back. Nice open fire kept going all night. Bunkhouse and facilities were clean and great value.

Best pie ever

We booked this for a weekend walking with a group of 13 women. We had 3 rooms booked just for ourselves though didn’t fill every bunk - yes the rooms are small but the beds were comfy and it was clean and warm. The kitchen is limited but we ate in the pub which is a very popular food pub with an open fire and the food was great with big portions - pre-ordering meant our food arrived quickly. Yes you get told what table to sit at but that is because they have people booked in to eat. The best bit was how friendly the staff were that weekend - Stevie(?) a Scottish chap and a younger colleague were great and nothing was too much trouble. The bunk house is cheap but clean and if you want a hotel then you’ll have to pay for it! If you want to eat or be guaranteed a table then book ahead. The weather was very kind to us but be aware the rooms are in a line and you need to go outside to access the different rooms/toilet/kitchen.

We were fortunate to get the last table. The food was out of this world and we would both highly recommend this lovely eatery. Look forward to visiting again in the near future. Thank you. Fran and Peter

Superb food in a lovely venue.

Phoned at the last minute and the lady who answered the phone booked us a table for four with no hassle. Turned up to a busy pub, so really glad we had a reserved table (Thursday evening  - guess its busier at the weekends).  Food and drink were excellent,  large hot portions,  with all four different meals brought to the table at the same time. All four of us enjoyed the food and will definitely be back. 

Great food.

We stayed in the bunkhouse and ate in the restaurant. The food was really tasty, nothing bad to say about it, however the service was not as good. The young members of staff were really friendly, but the “more mature” blonde lady was quite rude and just shouted replies to our questions in a very abrupt manner, it felt like as paying customers, we were an inconvenience to her. The bunkhouse was a row of stables, the rooms were far too small, nowhere to put belongings. The sheets we payed £5 each to hire were stained and had holes in. You have to go outside  to get to the shared bathroom/kitchen. The bunkhouse is accessed up some steep wooden steps, which wouldn’t be suitable for everyone. The location is not as peaceful as I had expected, it’s situated just off a busy road. We paid for two nights, but only stayed one and will not return.

Will not return

This place was a cracking find. I’m staying clos by in the hamlet of Guarhouse so thought I’d pop in for a late lunch. 

What a treat. I had the best lasagna I’ve ever had. If I’d know the portions were so big I wouldn’t have ordered the chips. !! 

But I was so hungry I managed it !  Great place offering great food and service at great prices. 

Definitely return 

What an experience , we pulled in here just for a drink as we were staying and touring elsewhere . i went to the bar and said 2 drinks please , and had a funny look .
We sat down and their was a table next to us with 6 people and a dog ,as it was a dog friendly pub . Then we looked at the food they were eating and we looked at the menu  to our horror , the prices were extortionate , £5  more for the Steak and Ale Pie , example  .we have  eaten this last week all over Cumbria and this menu is way over the top .
The place is not that kind of place that warrants these prices , it is below some standards .
Any way , what happened next , 3  people came in and with their dog they ordered 4  drinks in pint glasses , as i was recovering from the  menu prices i saw the girl give the dog  the  pint glass and it drank from it  whilst sitting at the table .
WHAT HORROR I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT.
What a  filthy  thing to do , we  left our drinks and could not get out of this place fast enough , do dogs eat off dinner plates  ?    YES !    I would think .
Other reviews  say good things , i  don't know why , 
Choose elsewhere , if you like HYGIEINE , and NO  DOGS ,that share your glasses/plates etc.
Disgusting people , who thought it was funny ,  better places and better food and prices .
So CHEERS  for reading this , unfortunately the DOG could NOT raise his glass .
