Sadly our visit wasn't great! We visited last year for drinks/meal pre Yorkshire Show, loved it and booked a room as soon as the GYS 2024 dates were released. It was expensive but because we thought it would be lovely so went ahead and booked. 
On arrival we had a couple of staff ask if we were being seen to, and when we said yes they each said ok I'll get someone. So it took a while before we shown to our room. 
The room itself was small but ok, the bed was comfy, pillows not great - but the bathroom totally let it all down. 
The bathroom was dirty, there were four BIG spiders in it (I kid you not - one in each corner of the bathroom), the toilet seat was broken, the mirror was hung so high you could barely see into it and there was a smashed part of the wall near the mirror where the plasterwork was all broken and the paintwork damaged. 
Ordinarily we'd overlook this, but for £194 a night we'd expected more. 
Dinner was not a great affair. They had all the external doors open so it was freezing (blinkin freak July weather!), much of the menu was unavailable, and there was an air of hurriedness about the place. The staff were too busy to make any pleasantries and it was generally all a bit soul-less. 
Woken up at 5am by the dray wagon's 'danger vehicle reversing' alarm and then the bumping and clanging of the delivery - argh!
We checked out the next morning to go to the show without anyone acknowledging us or saying goodbye.
All in all it was not a great experience!

This is a great place to stay and dine. The rooms are well maintained and very comfortable, and the food is excellent.
Louise and her team are very pleasant, helpful and friendly and we would highly recommend The Kestrel.

The Kestrel

Not a great experience. Room was right over the kitchen fans which were ridiculously loud and didn’t switch off till 10pm and started again at about 7 am. 
The tele didn’t work atall so couldn’t even watch this to drown out the noise. Mattress was awful, very uncomfortable.
We spoke to manager who said we would receive a refund within 3 days still waiting, I have had to chase this up and still waiting for someone to come back to me

Too loud and uncomfortable

I have always used these reviews when deciding on my choice of hotel and often take them with a pinch of salt as people’s expectations can vary so much. They do prove useful and hence I feel it only fair I add to the library.  

We have just returned from 3 nights at the Kestrel Hotel near Knaresborough.
When we decided to go to Yorkshire for a break, I spent a lot of time finding the right accommodation and feel in the end we made an excellent choice.   
Check-in was quick and easy.   The rooms are basic but surprisingly large but who really needs more, we certainly didn’t.  It was spotlessly clean and the Bed extremely comfortable.  The only point to note on a downside is that the Wi-Fi didn’t seem to stretch to our room but that wasn’t a problem.  We faced the main road but never heard a noise thanks to the triple glazing.  Heating worked well in fact too well so we turned it off.
Great choice for breakfast and it tasted lovely and the portions made sure you were set for the day.
We had evening meal in the hotel for 2 nights and can confirm there is again a great choice and it all tasted delicious.
In summary couldn’t have asked for more and would certainly recommend and will certainly stay again if we visit the area.  One cannot beat 10 out of 10.  Thank you to all the staff especially Francesca who welcomed us on our arrival and served us in the restaurant...

Great Find In Yorkshire

We were surprising friends for a birthday and had booked into the Kestral. 
On arrival the pub looks a bit tired but on entering you are welcomed into a lovely warm old coaching inn. The Staff were very helpful, plenty of choice on the bar. We checked into a lovely warm room, with one of the best showers we have used, great water pressure. Large tv, comfy bed & coffee/tea making facilities. Also a choice of soya milk on the tray, which is good if you are vegan or milk intolerant. Breakfast was excellent, with great choice on the menu. I had the pancakes & fresh fruit, my husband had the full English which was large & very filling, excellently cooked & presented. 
All in all, a great stay in a cosy, welcoming pub

Surprise Birthday weekend

Called as we passed by after a late hospital appointment. Staff were pleasant and attentive and service was reasonably quick.  My wife’s gammon and eggs was fine and the accompanying chips were lovely - fluffy inside and crisp outside.  My meal was not so satisfying though. I had belly pork, which was nice though a little stringy, with black pudding mash. I hardly noticed the black pudding. Most disappointing of all was the crackling.  It had been “manufactured” in the shape of a razor mussel but was so hard to cut or bite through that I left it to save the health of my teeth.  I do wish that chefs wouldn’t layer food in the centre of a plate. My meal had a bottom layer of wilted spinach, topped with the mashed potato, and then the belly pork balanced atop the pile.  Chefs, I don’t appreciate a game of Jenga with my food. There are better ways to present a meal than building a tower in the middle of large plate.

Stayed in Harlow Carr room for a night after visiting York, room was very nice , plenty of room, overlooking fields & horses, good for a quiet nights sleep, although during the day there's a constant humming noise behind some boxing (think was coming from the kitchen extractor fans) it did stop at bedtime!
Bed was comfortable, plenty of tea & coffee, & complimentary toiletries.
Bathroom was ok , it did have a good quality shower, but I would really of appreciated a room with a bath after doing so much walking .The bathroom could do with a few touch ups of paint , but was clean, & good quality towels. Also the wooden beams were very dusty , but maybe I'm being picky !
We had a delicious meal ( chicken curry & lasagne) & wine in the pub & a lovely relaxing evening .Emma looked after us whilst there , & another young dark haired member of staff, they were very good & polite & professional.
We did enjoy our stay , & would recommend if you don't mind being out in the sticks a bit , you do need a car , & plenty of car parking.


Knaresborough Visit 

A brilliant find for a drink and an impromptu meal - really friendly staff, a great atmosphere and delicious food - what's not to like! 
Plus they are dog friendly - always a bonus! 
Definitely one to re-visit when in the area :-)

What's not to like! 

We were staying nearby in Spofforth and noticed the Kestrel whilst travelling around.  We booked a table for an evening meal and it was excellent.  The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.  Especially Ciaran who looked after us and made us feel really welcome.  We will definitely recommend to family and friends and, will visit again should we be in the area.

Great experience

We were travelling up to Northumberland from the MIdlands and decided to break our journey with a stop off in Yorkshire. I chose the Kestrel as it was in a good location, the price was pretty reasonable and it looked good in the pictures. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly young woman and shown to our room. All rooms are upstairs so it wouldn’t be suitable for people with mobility issues. After settling into our room we decided to eat in the restaurant and relax. My husband had a prawn cocktail, which he enjoyed and the Sea Bass. However, the Sea Bass was dry and tasteless and looked as if it had been reheated. I didn’t want a starter so I just opted for a main meal. As I have Coeliac Disease the choice was a little limited so I plumped for a Sirloin steak, this was not good, it was really tough and I found I was unable to eat the majority of it but as I was very hungry so I ate the chips and the tomatoes, which were fine. We mentioned to the server that the food wasn’t up to scratch and she spoke to the Manager and my husband ice cream was deducted from the bill. 
After enjoying a really good night sleep we went downstairs for breakfast, which compared to the previous meal we’d had here was delicious and the lady who served us was lovely.
We would stay here again but maybe choose something else for our food, its not the cheapest place to stay and breakfast is an additional charge but the setting is beautiful.
