Where do I start. We traveled to the Fenwick for a little break away from home. We arrived rather early. Upon our arrival we where met at the book in desk by a friendly and helpful staff member who informed us that our room wasn't quite ready (we expected that.) We decided to take a seat in the bar area for a drink and a light bite. The furniture was comfortable and the theme was very cosy. We opted for some lite bites for lunch, the wings that I got recommended certainly lived up to the recommendation crunchy on the outside a soft and juicy on the inside. The sauce and choice of seasonings perfectly complemented the wings. Our room was ready, so we headed up to the room. To our delight there was a clean and well kept cot bed for the baby. We did bring our own but there was no need for us to use it, so that stayed in the car, bonus. The room was clean warm and well presented the housekeeping staff did a fantastic job. The shower facilities where superb and the bathroom was spacious and immaculate. We headed out for our evening meal. We had pre booked a time to eat and again there was an example of excellent customer service. There was a clean high chair waiting for us at our table to make our meal time easy and relaxing. The Food - hats off to the chefs. My fiance opted for the cauliflower courgette and carrot bhaji. She stated these where the best bhaji's she had tasted (big statement) I decided on the soup of the day. This was perfectly seasoned and bursting with flavour, and also the sourdough bread matched perfectly with the seasonal soup. Main dishes - I left this up to Scott ( Manager) and I am glad I did. The Sunday roast was sublime the tender braised beef was falling apart and cooked to a perfect medium. The seasonal vegetables elevated the dish particularly the mashed potatoes. The gravy was rich and wholesome and was thoroughly enjoyed. We took off back to the room for an early night. Shortly after there was a knock on the door from a staff member who brought a specially made desert to the room on the house as it was my partners birthday this was a touch of class. I must give special mentions to Scott and his team as nothing was to much they where always at hand to help and make our stay comfortable and memorable. Also the bar man George was a pleasure to meet, polite, well mannered and very friendly. Thank you George and Scott we Will certainly be visiting again in the near future. Well done I would recommend anyone to stay here, great little gem. 

Wholesome Friendly and exceptional value 

Had a great overnight stay here, the staff were very kind and welcoming. The mattress was super comfortable and the shower was great. We didn’t stop for breakfast, but we did have drinks and an evening meal in the restaurant and the quality and taste of our meals was fabulous. We will be staying here again in the future.

Highly recommended 

Really disappointing! I found the room stuffy and far too hot suring the night. The pillows are just not comfortable. Had dinner and it was ok although the steak was a bit chewy. Service was fine. BUT i would never stay here again as breakfast was an absolute farce! There were 5 people in the restaurant and it took an hour to have breakfast. Service was terrible. Ordered full english and asked for toast. It took 40 mins for the food to arrive. I sat waiting and waiting for the food. When the food arrived the toast was dumped on top, the yolk of the paoched egg broken and had become solid. The staff didn't care. I spoke to the waitress and breakfast chef and they just shrugged off my comments. This hotel is supposed to be a gastro hotel and it falls far far short of this! This is probably the worst breakfast I've had in a hotel and Ive stayed in a lot of hotels.

Great place to stay that has it all including excellent value for money. Staff are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Food is excellent accompanied by log fires in a cosy country pub. Accommodation is modern and comfortable and spotlessly clean, on out list of places to return to :).

We booked our first Christmas away from home for nearly 50 years and what a  major disappointment it turned out to be.
In October my husband and I had called at the Fenwick for lunch being very impressed with the food and the service decided to book for the advertised two night Christmas Break - Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. On arrival we were somewhat dismayed to be greeted with they were very short staffed and that was no room service available. When we were shown to our room we had to access it via  outside stairs resembling a metal fire escape. Both of us are over 70 and fortunately for us there was no frost during our stay.
My first evening meal prawn curry chosen from provided menu was good. My husband chose the Pot Pie only to be told that it was off the menu. He then chose the hake which was also off the menu. Eventually he settled for fish and chips.
No complaints with the Christmas Day breakfast - full English and scrambled egg and smoked salmon muffin. We were told our Christmas Dinner was booked for 3.30pm. On arriving in the restaurant we were told our table was not ready and sat at the bar with our Prosecco waiting for the previous diners to vacate our table. The starters were adequate. warm but not hot. My husband then had chosen the turkey which was in chunks not slices, there was no cranberry sauce and the bread sauce has already been placed on the meat. He had to ask for pigs in blankets and stuffing which were then served on a separate plate. The stuffing was cold and uncooked. My turbot was tasty but the portion was small and the vegetables were cold. Twice the staff tried to serve me turkey instead of fish although this had been pre-ordered weeks before. My Christmas pudding was hard and inedible - I presume it had been micro waved too long and the accompanying sauce was tepid and lumpy. This meal took well over 2 hours to be served. The chocolate and caramel truffles on the menu never materialised.
The evening buffet consisted of roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding with pulled beef (presumably left over from the dinner) There was also oven chips with a dip. Needless to say not a single resident ate anything from this buffet.  The party games we were promised and no doubt were charged for in the package never materialised.
Overall we were glad to get home on Boxing Day, leaving as early as possible.
The experience was a shambles.

Major Disappointment Christmas 2002 break

Left booking Christmas Dinner till the last minute so I didn't think we'd find anything but they squeezed us in and we are very glad they did! Right from the off everyone was lovely and the resturant was stunning - we were sat by the fire which was lovely and cozy. The food was delicious through every course and the portions were massive - we left content and very very full! The staff, especially our waitress Noni, were incredible and very attentive with checking on us just the right amount and getting us drinks. Will definitely be back!

Christmas Dinner 2022

Another trip north another break at the Fenwick - 3rd visit (2nd review) since Covid.    It continues to maintain the high standard which I have become accustomed to from Oakman Inns with extremely pleasant staff, good quality food and drinks and a more than adequate bed for the night.
   
Very pleasant welcome and our third room which was again well presented and extremely comfortable and the real fire made this a real home from home.

We had taken advantage of the bed, breakfast & evening meal package which was tremendous value form money when you compare it against some of the motel rates these days and the obvious need to add food on top.   

A good range of drinks (far superior range of malt whiskies than any other of the chains properties) and the service was excellent despite being very busy on this visit.

Rapidly becoming a halfway house north and I am sure we will be returning on many occasions.


Well worth a 5 minute drive from the motorway

I have been here twice now in a similar number of weeks.  The rooms are clean and spacious, the food is exceptional and all the staff I encountered were professional and friendly; all clearly enjoyed working there.

Worth a weekend break

Lovely location, very welcoming staff.
Room was well decorated, furnished well. 
Walls were a bit thin in our room, could hear people outside but this didn't affect our stay. 
Will definitely return again. 
Food was delicious, we had starters, main and dessert. Excellent value for money.

Room and food. 

Different room to what we booked, massive difference as we had booked the superior room so went back to reception to query this with gentleman on reception, showed him my confirmed booking, took no responsibility, Although agreed with me it was someones  problem but whose had to be decided which I found bizarre, blamed booking.com and generally unsympathetic. 
Went back to room but decided we couldn’t stay as they took no responsibility, I get mistakes and can live with that but felt a tinge of arrogance blaming booking.com leading to my instinct wondering if they knew exactly what they were doing and at a late hour we would put up with not getting what we paid for.

Didn’t make a scene and shook hands respectfully with gent on reception and agreed I’d expect a refund as I was of course having to book another location elsewhere.  

Hasn’t happened, shame as looked a lovely bar and restaurant and great location hence the 1 star.
