Stayed over one night this week prior to a meeting in Swindon.

The New Inn is a smashing olde-worlde pub with rooms, backing onto the Thames, in the small town of Lechlade in the Cotswolds. 

Location - In a small town / village on a main route through the Cotswolds, easy to find and handy for touristy stuff, but also close to Swindon. The town has a number of nice pubs serving real-ale within a short walking distance, as well as shops, cafes etc. The New Inn is located right in the heart of the town. Parking is easy, with a good number of spaces in front of the pub on the town 'square', and also a good sized private car park at the rear of the property.

The pub is lovely, with a good selection of real ales, and excellent food.

The rooms are a little dated and basic, but clean and comfortable and with plenty of fluffy towels. I stayed in room 40 in the main building (looking out on to the main road), and there was a lot of traffic noise from around 5.30am. However, there are rooms in the annex buildings behind the main building, which would not be so noisy I am sure.

The main reason for the 5 star review though, is the staff. It's nice to be welcomed by such helpful, cheerful and attentive staff, be that on reception, the staff in the main pub, or in the restaurant for breakfast - as it was school holidays, my breakfast service was handled very professionally by the owner's two young daughters (I think), who were charming and delightful!

Recommended for a business or leisure stay, for sure.

Delightful stay in a great location

Great place to stay in the Market Square with garden at the rear on the banks of the Thames. Perfect base to explore the Cotswolds and surrounding area, as well as messing around on the river with boat and paddle board hire around the corner. Food is especially good, particularly the daily specials and signature dishes.

Perfect base for Thames and Cotswolds

A very nice old hotel in the middle of Lechlade, great service from very friendly staff. Nice big bar area, room was okay, not as big as the one we had last time we stayed. Very comfortable bed and very nice shower. We eat in the restaurant, food was very nice, initial service a bit slow but was very busy.

Great stay

Fabulous hotel , just had 2 nights there and really can’t fault the hotel, the staff and the excellent food. Family run hotel and it shows with the care they give the guests. The food was amazing both breakfast and dinner. Beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Would happily stay again if we are in the area.

Fabulous hotel

Clean, tidy, excellent hot shower and towels  comfortable double bed. The hotel is over 200 years old (the English poet, Shelley, slept here in 1815), and creaky stairs and floors are part of what you pay for. Staff were busy but helpful. The room overlooked the town square.

Another satisfactory stay at New Inn

Nice stay but a few flaws, we had rang previously with some confusion on booking online. They had offered us on the phone on 2 occasions to waive the cot charge but on arrival there was no notes on the booking and no one we had spoke to on the phone to confirm this. Throughout our stay no one corrected this, offered to speak to us about it or offered a refund even though there was ample opportunity. In my experience working in hotels you approach a customer if you know there was an issue on arrival. 
Secondly although it is busy due to half term we were placed on the top floor with a baby and therefore lots of baggage. They need to be more considerate of upcoming guests and place them in suitable bedrooms for this. Or at least be asked if top floor is okay for us or even offered to help with bags on arrival. 
Food was absolutely delicious 👌 definitely eat here! 
Breakfast hasn’t got much options for people who don’t like a cooked breakfast. Some fruit other than grapes and strawberries would’ve been nice. 
Not the hotels fault but it does face a busy road if you struggle to sleep with noise bare this in mind.
Room was really hot despite windows being open the whole stay. I kept forgetting to ask for a fan. 
We did enjoy our stay most of the staff were lovely, I felt I didn’t want to complain with it being my partners birthday where as I would’ve normally. 
This is just a few things I noticed that could’ve been better.

Nice stay but a few flaws

Before I continue with this review, I would like to confirm that one of the business partners of this hotel did call after posting a review on Booking.com.  However, I will still give the same review here.

The price charged was £424.00 per night not including breakfast and we stayed for two nights so £848.00.  For that price, I would expect something close to five star accommodation but received a lacking two star at best.  

I appreciate it was RIAT weekend, however, that is not a good enough reason to hike prices to a ridiculous amount when you cannot offer decent accommodation.

The room was lacking ventilation and smelt musty.  The bathroom was tight with little space for toiletries and hanging towels.  The towel rail was above the toilet!  The pedal bin the bathroom was broken, the lighting was all on one circuit so all or nothing which means the bedside lamps were pointless.  The sockets at the side of the lamp switches were so high you needed an extension lead to charge anything.

The cleaning service was non-existent.  The bed was not made, the bathroom bin not emptied, the tea/coffee not replenished and the towels were holey.  

There was a hairdryer in the bedroom which was hot and had not been used so the electrics were suspect as well as no smoke alarm.  I did not use the hairdryer as did not feel to do so.  I switched it off at the mains and confirmed this to the gentleman that telephoned.

Would never stay again.  We decided to drive to and from RIAT on the day than stay over which at our age we are is very difficult.

Never again, not at those prices!

On the up side, Monica's Plaice fish and chips are brilliant with great staff.  The location is very close to RAF Fairford but still does not warrant the prices.

Beautiful place myself & partner ate here today it was absolutely stunning. Place has a lovely character and the staff were so friendly. Food was beautiful. We popped up to a shop and stumbled across this place and I'm so glad we did! We will be back x

Lovely staff & beautiful food

I had a room in the annexe, Apsley house, even though an old property the bedroom was small, no hanging space for clothes. In the ensuite the sink and loo were OK but the shower tray was pitted and not very special and there had been a leak at some stage. The bed was comfortable and even though on the main road it was not noisy.

Distinctly average

As always the atmosphere and staff were amazing. Food was great . Our bathroom light switch broke on New Year’s Day but it was fixed straight away . 
We have stayed several times and it’s a good location for Cheltenham races
