This place is shocking.   Recently visited and had an ok meal.   Decided to come back to give another try..   from previous experience of not getting enough for the main course, we ordered Yorkshire pudding starter,   £4.95 for a frozen Yorkshire you are having a laugh at my expense..   The gravy tasted exactly like vegetable water .  Then came the roast,   Lumps in the mash with cheap margarine.   Beef or should I say fat..   Again same vegetable tasting gravy..   frozen roasts .   I just cannot comprehend.

Disgusting 

I arrived to check in and the first thing I noticed was the really strong smell of mold and how dirty the room was.  It was difficult to locate exactly where the mold came from as it has been painted over but you can see faint black spots behind the bed and in the bathroom.  The room was totally freezing - it doesn’t help that the outside door to the annex corridor where the room is situated is left open so it is only an internal door to the outside. Radiator didn’t work so I went to the adjoining bar (note - very noisy) where the landlord was having a party and asked him to help me. He offered to turn the heating on remotely but I advised that the radiator wasn’t on and completely cold and would he please come to the room and check. He refused to take 2 minutes to check and told me that I could f*** off and go back to my f***ing freezing room and just generally swearing and shouting. I told him to calm down as I was totally shocked that he was so abusive and threatening and it was not appropriate and he said to me that if I continued to complain he was canceling my reservation, would come to my room and throw me out on the street. He was unstable and volatile (!!!) so I left as I did not feel safe.. I advised this to company I booked with and he responded with accusations against me (??) which I am sure he will also do to this review.  My advice would be to check the other reviews on this place which mention the same regarding mould, cold and dirty - AVOID

Shocking experience - beware

Phoned at 12.45 to enquire about lunchtime food.  Was told plenty of room outside.   Arrived about 2.00. Eventually drinks order taken.  Arrived in 3 batches.  Expensive and beer short measures. Tried to order food but rudely informed 1.5 hour wait!  Pity not told before drink order taken.  Worst service I have ever had in 50 years of using pubs. AVOID.

Appalling rude service

Excellent pub with great staff. We had Salmon and Rib eye steak followed by sticky toffee pudding and Baileys cheesecake all were excellent. We were staying at nearby Oulton Hall and would definitely visit again when in the area.

Visit with parents on Tuesday evening 4th August 2020

We visited with my son and his partner while visiting them.  This traditional pub never disappoints.  Good food, good service and nice ambiance.  Everything you want from a nice pub.  Excellent steak with even better value with the ten pound off deal.  Staff very good with covid precautions.  This pub never disappoints

Another Good Visit

A lovely little pub around the corner from the Holiday Inn Express. The Toby Carvery next to hotel was full and we are now glad as walked to this lovely pub. Friendly staff and tasty food. Highly recommend especially if staying at the hotel or new to the area. 

Meal and drinks

Friendly staff and good food. What more can you ask for? Extensive menu  (eat out to help out scheme obviously helps a lot) but notwithstanding this the food prices were extremely reasonable anyway. Clean environment and would recommend to others
 Would visit again without hesitation.

Food and drink

Thoroughly disappointed. Having recently moved to the area I thought I would try this pub out. I ordered the lasagne and it was disgusting. I appreciate that it was homemade, however they had clearly reheated it up in the microwave, it had clumpy mince pieces and chewy pasta (not to mention a small slice) We spent almost £40 in the pub on our meal and I don’t think it was worth it by far. When asked ‘how was your meal?’ I explained how disappointed I was.The young girl replied ‘ohh’ and then nothing was done to rectify the problem. Bad customer service, bad food. Will NOT be returning. The new Mason Arms needs a NEW chef.

Awful

Dreadful, that’s the food. Hate giving bad reviews, but Sunday lunch was just awful. Frozen roast potatoes, frozen Yorkshire puddings, over cooked cheap vegetables- cabbage. No one does cabbage in restaurants anymore. Roast beef tough and cheap cuts. Lamb had string on it. Not interested in our comments. Staff were however generally efficient but seemly unsurprised at our comments. We complained but no one bothered to come and speak with us. Won’t be back or recommend.

Not home cooked food

We called in today for a drink ( it is a pub) all tables where taken with people eating or reserved on the rest,we were there quite abit & no one sat on the reserved ones,hubby getting us a second drink & after been stood there & ignored for a bit we decided to leave
