If, having done your research on TA, you wander round the lovely village of Middleham searching for the White Swan - your efforts will be in vain, because the said hotel/pub/restaurant has closed down.

Never fear however, because it has been resurrected under the guise of the Wensleydale Hotel, and one would assume that in due course the listing for the White Swan will either be removed or updated.

Don’t go searching for this hotel/pub!

We only stayed for one night at the hotel which is now re-named The Wensleydale and for the last couple of months has been under new ownership. There is clearly quite a lot to do to bring the hotel up to standard but a good start has been made on the reception and restaurant areas and windows. The room was a little 'tired' but there were new towels, bedding etc and the main thing was it it was clean! Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed the night we stayed but we enjoyed our breakfast which was plentiful and well cooked and presented. Ideally located and we look forward to returning at some future date to see it post refurbishment - one suggestion - perhaps make replacement of the stair carpet a priority. It definitely has a bit of an 'aura' about it!

Friendly and better things to come!

Are here  this evening, would  not again.  Started with  bad staff who seemed   to not know what she was doing,  no welcome, good evening etc. Beer asked for told was off and other beer chosen  for not taste right. Onto menu we do not eat  meat as only two  options for  fish...no options for vegan or vegetarian...... .Asked for our choice and told 
 one option run out of...then asked if I could have one of the starters as a main-this was fine.  Starters arrived, quite cold in temperature and quite bland. Main course of risotto  sloppy in texture and again tasteless. Starter that came as a main could of been more adventurous...just prawns and rocket, no veg or potatoes. Finally pudding pear belle helene, I do not think so!!!!!. Only good point is owner polite and professional and waiter also, would never return to eat sorry..

Disappointing

Rooms comfortable. Views across the square. Able to watch horses going to an from the gallops. Local Theakstone’s beer and lager at the bar. Excellent seating area outside, in the sun most of the day, able to just watch the worl go by! Food excellent,service attentive. Very good value. Definitely return.

A great base for touring historical sites in Yorkshire.

We were made aware on arrival that the hotel is being refurbished and that if anything wasn't satisfactory then we should let a member of staff know.  The room was spotlessly clean, the food delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Nice Weekend Break

This old coaching inn is in a great position in the middle of Middleham town. After a warm welcome in the Bar/Reception we climbed the stairs to our room and straight away got the impression that this old inn was looking very tired and worn. We paid £10 extra for a superior room which had 2 large windows overlooking the town square but there was nothing else superior about the room! There was no shampoo, soap etc provided and only 1 toilet roll. Bed was clean & comfortable. We discovered the hotel is in the process of changing hands so look out for a re-vitalised White Swan in the future.

Old Coaching Inn in middle of town

Strange entrance / bar area. Woman sat behind a desk, never looked up from the computer. Felt like we were in a waiting room. If that’s supposed to be the reception it’s not welcoming. Seating uncomfortable in bar. Bar and waiter trying to hard, need to relax a bit. It’s not a fine dining restaurant. Food was just ok, small portions and over priced for what we got. I had the lamb, and for £15 I would expect more than a tiny thin slice of fatty lamb accompanied by a ramekin of tasteless shepherds pie. Won’t be returning.

Pretentious for what it is

We dined here last Thursday. Its just been taken over and had only opened the restaurant under the 'Wensleydale Hotel' name a couple of weeks earlier. The service was good but the quality of the food was poor.  Hopefully time will change this but we shan't be going back.

Disappointing Meal

We booked using a voucher back in February for a 2 night stay in May. The hotel is now called the Wensleydale Hotel. On arrival there were no staff around, eventually we were checked in and taken to Room 1. On first impression it looked small but ok. I had low expectations having read recent reviews. It’s a SMALL magnolia box with old pictures on the walls and mismatched shabby ( but not in a good ‘chic’ way) furniture. We would have had a nice view out the back if we could have seen out of the FILTHY window. A flimsy curtain is almost hanging from the rail. The en-suite door was DIRTY all over with old drips of whatever dried and running down it. Around the bath there is MOULD and there is a suspicious STAIN on the vinyl flooring near the toilet. To say this room needs an up grade is an understatement. More about ‘upgrades’ later.
We decided, for both the extra cost of £10 per person for breakfast (expensive for the area) and for the obvious lack of cleanliness that it would be wise not to stay to eat there.
When we left at 9.30 on the Sunday there was no one around again to give the key to. The new owners have halved the bar area - it can probably accommodate 8 now - by turning half the room into a reception area - that is never manned! We left the key on the till behind the bar.
Later that morning I discovered I had missed a call from the hotel and someone ( a woman with a foreign accent) had left a message saying we owed £20 for an upgrade. UPGRADE? Reading other reviews, it seems that everyone is ‘encouraged ‘ by the owners to upgrade. I wonder what the basic standard is then....? She called me again and told me I had requested an upgrade to a SUPERIOR ROOM and therefore I owed them money. I dread to think what a standard room is like based on our experience in that small, dirty and dated room. I have the original booking confirmation email confirming I have a standard room booked. Again, I am suspicious of these so called ‘upgrades’. She was extremely rude on the phone, so now I’m relieved we never saw any staff at the hotel! Every cloud....
There are so many lovely towns and villages - I agree with another reviewer that Leyburn is really nice, that my advice is do more research than I did in February and book somewhere else!
