My daughter and I spent two wonderful days at the Abbey Grange Hotel. The food is amazing being raised on their own farm to very high welfare standards. The vegetables and salad are also home grown. The grounds are immaculately kept with amazing floral displays. The hotel is dog friendly which is important to us. Yes, the room was dated but very much benefited from being so. It was a pleasure to sleep between crisp, white linen sheets, an eiderdown and a bedcover. The view was amazing. The staff, we met Llinos,Beth and Steve the landlord were all very friendly. Steve makes the very best breakfasts in the world! We brought some beer home from their on-site brewery. I would give this hotel ten stars if I could.

Simply the best.

Looked online & found this Pub based Hotel close by to the World Heritage Aquaduct  Site.

 Friendly  staff, excellent food with good beer some brewed locally.

Bearing in mind it was rated at around 3.5 stars my review is based on this expectation that it easily exceeded.

Nice outside patio area to have your coffee after a meal - clean room - let down slightly by the view outside from our bedroom of the rear yard.  Not a deal breaker as once the curtains are drawn it's gone!

My review is based on what I expected from online reviews most of those were in my view overly harsh. I was shocked that the Abbey Grange was not busier but many folk look at a review not taking into account that the premises may have improved or that it's easier to moan than praise.

I would definely recommend to friends and stay again if I was touring nearby. Lovely breakfast and fantastic home made puddings when we had our evening meal - the Rhubarb & Strawberry crumble was to die for.

Nothing was too much trouble the pace of life was Glacial so one night felt like a long weekend.

Brilliant!

Trip to see the Pontysycyllte Aquaduct stayed nearby at friendly Hotel

I had read the reviews before booking and took on board what they had said, however I must say I was pleasantly surprised...yes the room could have done with a little fettle, peeling paint, grubby skirting boards BUT a no nonsense hotel with staff that were so friendly and could not do enough for you. I felt very at home. The location is amazing, and the meals were scrumptious, breakfast was plentiful. I would recommend staying here as long as you are aware of the negatives. I stayed in the four poster room which had beautiful views across the valley, I would definitely stay again without a doubt and will book next time I'm this way on. Of course I was blessed with sunshine which always helps!

No nonsense, friendly, with views across the valley, it is what it is!

We stayed over the bank holiday weekend. Yes the facilities are not as one would expect but that is mainly due to the people staying on the site. Toilet rolls were stolen and no consideration of those using the facilities after them. The site is full of scousers the ones we came across were vile. The language is horrendous, if I counted the number of F-bombs dropped I would be a millionaire, they do not know any other word maybe they could be gifted a dictionary to broaden their vocabulary. On Sunday evening the music was blaring and when confronted by the hotel staff member (female) they had the audacity to back chat at her over the state of the facilities, if they didn't like it why not leave instead of bringing it up when intoxicated. I actually spoke with the lady on the way back from the toilet and she stated that she had spoken to them and she felt intimidated, this lady is only doing her job. They were over the age of 40 not young adults but their attitude was that of a child obviously their mental age. My husband saw the interaction and their response to the music levels being reduced was well we have paid £130 to be here, so has everyone else you selfish delinquents. This review is more of the people staying on the site than the camp site itself. I would certainly not invest in better facilities knowing full well that this kind of demographic would not look after them. I feel sorry for the owners they try their best but are fighting a losing battle with this type of clientele, unfortunately they are not going to ban this type of people. But maybe future customers can bear in mind that everyone has paid to be on the site, be considerate and not a nuisance to fellow campers and staff members and if you can't then stay at home and everyone will be happy!!! To the scousers who said they would never return good luck in finding a campsite that would put up with your behaviour as most would throw you off after the first night - scum bags

Camping

Having read previous reviews on this hotel we were reluctant but needed it to be near a wedding venue we were attending. Room was dated but had what we needed.....linen clean..bathroom adequate...bed comfy ..apare pillows. Room cleanly decorated. 
Bar was good...well  atocked and decently priceď. Views beautiful in part of Snowdonia national park. 
No breakfast which was dissapointing as other reviews state there was breakfast . They do evening meals and Sunday lunch which we didnt sample because of the wedding.
Would stay again. Dont go off other reviews.

Better than expected

This is a pretty basic hotel, room only above a pub and brewery. Had a basic play area out front with lovely view of the countryside and plenty of seating. Inside the pub was dark and the lady wasn’t too warm or friendly just doing her job and nothing more. Room was basic we had room 2 a double bed and a single overlooking the front of the property. Was clean but dated as was the bathroom. Shower pressure was poor but expected at this level of hotel. The establishment was room only and we were instructed to leave the key and pull the door closed when we were ready to check out so didn’t see the staff before we left. Cant complain based on the price and the fact we booked the day before we went that this place was the only place with availability so we adjusted our expectations before we arrived.

This place could be beautiful, but it is very old and tired, lots of flies inside, and months of dust in the rooms. Very low water pressure. Why is the heating on 100degrees,then a large fan on, what a waste of money. Wonderful veiws, decent breakfast, clean white sheets. Yes I, would stay again as the walk to Llangollen is beautiful. 

Let’s start with the positives….. there must be something positive to say…. It’s a 2 mile walk into Llangollen village, which once you are on to the canal path is a lovely walk. 
Also it was cheap - around £85 for three nights over the bank holiday.
Now onto the negatives.  Our experience at this campsite was disappointing. The pitch we were on backed on to a noisy road, disturbing the children’s sleep. The clientele were also extremely loud. With music blasting into the night. Whilst when you check in they give a strict no noise policy, this is not enforced. 
The facilities were absolutely disgusting, and in need of maintenance - the bathrooms were unclean, it was more hygienic not to wash for three days than use the filthy showers on site. 
The field and park area were full of litter, not once did I see any staff attempting to keep on top of this and clean up. Although even if they did bother to clean the bins were vile and overflowing. Whilst I appreciate it was a bank holiday, there should be more bins provided for the volume of people on site instead of letting it pile up and be strewn across the floor. 
We camp regularly and booked this last minute so wasn’t expecting 5 * luxury, but wow, a bit of bleach and some toilet roll isn’t exactly too much to ask. I would say avoid this campsite if you can! 

Loud, dirty, one to avoid!!! 

We stayed one night, very convenient location within walking distance of Horseshoe Falls. Not a great welcome.  We knew we were early, the lady behind the bar just said brusquely that we couldn't book in for half an hour. she didn't suggest coffee or a drink or lunch. We did order lunch which took ages to come and wasn't great. The rooms were a lovely size but a bit tired and could easily be made more attractive. Our room (1) did have a new carpet and freshly painted cream walls - but had mauve skirting boards and radiator. Lovely 4 poster bed, all clean and comfortable, although the other 2 rooms (4 & 5) said their beds were not comfortable. Our ensuite bathroom had an avocado suite & tiles and the most horrible jade green paint! 
No staff around when we left next morning. There is huge potential for this hotel to be fabulous - it needs a visit from the TV Hotel Inspector!

Good location, some disappointing features

Amid a family crisis, we needed a port in the storm and the Abbey Grange Hotel came up trumps, with short notice availability. Grateful as we were, it soon became apparent why their occupancy is so low, in high season.

On the plus side our room was clean, our sheets were fresh, the hospitalty tray was generous and they actively welcomed our well behaved dog. The on-site brewery produces some excellent ales too! For campers on the field, the hotel can provide basic food and drinks and a play area for children, whilst parents can sit on the veranda and appreciate the marvellous views. 

Unfortunately, this lovely old hotel, in a superb location, is now very tired and in need of a properly invested improvement programme. The carpets, furniture, layout etc are old and tired, not in a good way and this does not provide travellers a pleasant place to sit, relax and eat. There is a musty, unwelcoming smell throughout the building, which can only be eradicated with a full refit. In our room, inadequate water pressure, both hot and cold, made for a sad shower. The 1980s bathroom fixtures are beyond saving, our mattress was life-expired, yet more of that smelly carpet and the room was stuffed with uneccessary furniture for the modern traveller's needs. The ambience is one of a jaded old gem, whose heydays are past and which is limping, wounded from the legacy of the recent pandemic towards an uncertain future.

The damning reviews on here are not wrong but are diagnosing symptoms of a business which has lost it's mojo. Unless the current owners can take a 180° turn quickly, these dreadful reviews will continue and ultimately will choke off the occupancy, to strangulate this hotel. Survival of the fittest is the mantra in business and sadly, the Abbey Grange Hotel is not evolving with the times. It's neighbours are. 

We sincerely wish the owners luck and the courage to bring in help, soon, to drive their business forward. Why not call in Alex Polizzi? Thank you for giving us shelter when we needed it and for that we shall always be grateful.
