Great little find. This is the second time we’ve eaten here. Staff are friendly and welcoming. It’s dog friendly. Food is reasonably priced and good quality.  There are lots of places to eat in Lyme Regis that are overpriced and poor value. We had venison Bourginon and also a steak meal. All food was very tasty and nicely presented. This restaurant is our favourite place to come when we are visiting the area.

Great little find

Started well ... nice room looking out onto bay ...
Woken at 7am by builders who were starting refurb of the rooms.  Hotel forgot we were booked in so we woke up to drilling and banging.  Workmen were wearing ear defenders ...
Breakfast awful - tiny portions, avocado stale and toast stone cold. 
Won't be coming back - real shame as beautiful location.
I would like to add the only other positive was the lovely temporary Manager - if it wasn't for her, this complaint would have been escalated further.

Save your money and go elsewhere!!

Booked on Hotels.com after ticking the dog friendly box. Added in the notes that we’d be bringing our dog. Day of the booking (10 days later) just as we were getting ready to leave we receive a phone call to tell us they couldn’t fulfill the booking as they had already given away the rooms to other guests.

Manner of the phone call was rude and the hotel member of staff took no responsibility for the issue and merely blamed us for not calling up to confirm the dog was ok. If the notes don’t get checked what’s the point of them anyway! What if we had notes for something of bigger concern such as something related to health conditions for instance?

The hotel staff need to consider their telephone manner. If you can’t fulfill a booking because of your incompetence don’t blame your guests and try and find a way to reach a reasonable compromise for your error.

Awful customer service

Visited today to spend time with family. Lyme being in the middle as a meeting place for us.  Choose the royal lion, none of us had been before. We had a lovely lunch! Sorry we couldn't eat it all!! Food was well made and the staff were welcoming and professional. We will definitely return. Many thanks. 

Beautiful dinner 

We booked a meal there and, despite the setting and ambience, were hugely disappointed. £10.35 for a large glass of wine was extortionate, likewise £18.95 for a shepherd's pie which sat lonely in the centre of the large plate and was accompanied by the smallest selection of vegetables ever witnessed. Whilst the pie was tasty - if over salty - entry into the top of the pastry required a very strong hand! The pie could have been purchased in Lidls or Aldi for a fraction of the price, together with two bottles of wine for the price charged here.
I repeat, a huge disappointment. Whilst I understand people must be willing to pay these prices in Lyme, as a local I will not be visiting either of your pubs in Colyford and Axmouth any time soon, given the prices you charge. 

Overpriced!

I don't usually write reviews but felt  compelled to as we  had a wonderful stay. There was nothing we could find fault with.
Lovely chilled atmosphere in the hotel. Great friendly staff & food was excellent. We had a room  upgrade so had a small terrace. Booked the pool & had it to ourselves. Would definitely return for another visit

Excellent

The double en suite room we had at the front of the hotel was a bit small, the furniture was battered and dated and the carpet had lots of marks on it.  There was mould in the shower. Although it has a pool and is close to the beach we found we had nowhere to dry our swim wear.
I didn't want to make a fuss as we were with Mum and her twin room was much better and we needed to be close to her.
The staff were very friendly, breakfast was OK, but if booking a late time some things like fruit or pastries will not be available. 

Small double room not worth £150 a night.

Our family of nine stayed here over the weekend of 15th to 18th September for a wedding in the town. The hotel is perfectly located right in the heart of Lyme Regis and a very short stroll to the seafront. The hotel has a long history in the town and has been extended over time which now boasts 30+ bedrooms. It has a large car park at the rear of the property which is unusual for a hotel in such a prime position. 
The rooms are roomy and have all the essentials you would expect. Surprisingly the hotel also has a swimming pool, full size snooker table, bar billiards and table tennis tables.
The breakfast is of high quality and plentiful with nothing being too much trouble for the kitchen.
But for me the outstanding feature of this hotel are its staff. Everyone from cleaners/reception/bar and restaurant staff could not be happier in their work which resonated through to the customers.
Well done Royal Lion, we had a great weekend

Perfect retreat for a stay in Lyme Regis

Leg felt itchy at 3:30am and woke up to find bed bugs on my leg, also found bed bugs in the other room we had that are 2 rooms away. End up throwing away our suitcases and most of our belongings, and stayed outside until shops were open to buy some new clothes. I have to see a GP to treat my 30+ bites as some of them blistered badly. The night receptionist and the manager dismissed us when we first told them about bed bugs, until we showed them the pictures and my bites, then they offered not to charge for our stay. We have made formal complaint to the company and received feedback that they will have pest control visit these two rooms, but I still advise people to stay at their own risk as bed bugs are likely to already infect other room.

Holiday ruined by bed bugs

Where to start...like a previous review I tell it how it is. Having not been for 4 years but have stayed once a year for the past 20 years. 
I'm afraid the old values where better than now. I liken it to an expensive Pub with rooms to let. It's in an ideal spot to capture everyone's attention but if you stay you see deeper. 
The rooms are comfortable but not worth the excess paid. Breakfast was great (but you are supposed to stick to your allotted time) .The first floor dining room or just breakfast room is fantastic and the staff that serve you are cheerful and friendly. 
Then come the evening meal ( which we use to go upstairs too) is now down in a room off the hallway and overspill into the bar. Not what we were expecting or pleased about as you were squashed in. Why not upstairs where the kitchen is?? Not every late comer could get in. 
Sorry to be depressing but Covid is still with us and we didn't like the close proximity of everyone. Smacks of more money for the shareholders sod the Paying Guests. 
All that said it's a lovely building in a prime spot so up yours. 
Finally the staff on the front line is why we will be going back again. They try so hard to make you welcome and comfortable it's a shame management in there air-conditioned office can't stop take take taking every penny. 
One final issue, the Tog 40 duvet is hardly any good in temperature of 28 - 32 degrees C
