I would describe The Cholmondeley Arms as more of a restaurant than a pub. We had lunch there today and ordered the sharing board which was excellent value at under £27 for two. The staff were very friendly and the choice of beer was good. This is an old building with high ceilings and my only criticism would be is that by placing large armchairs in front of the log fire it allows people to hog the heat and on very cold days this could be a problem. Having said that we really enjoyed our meal and will definitely return.

Lunch for two.

Went to the newly crowned ' 2023 English Pub Restaurant of the year , The Cholmondeley Arms , just of the A49 near Malpas.

Its a charming old conveted Victorian school house which has retained many original features from the days of yesteryear. 

My wife and I met up with a couple of friends , who we had known for 30 years 
 
We had all jointly  agreed that The Cholmondeley Arms  would be a good choice , being a quiet  award winning Country pub restaurant. 

However, the quet  polite , cultural conversation were engaging in was soon to be  shattered on this sunny  Saturday lunchtime due to the arrival of around 25 yobs on a pub crawl , who had been dropped off by a 40 seater coach.

This group of yobs were already highly intoxicated on arrival and were intent on making as much noise as possible.

They were just using the Cholmondeley Arms to notch up another pint on the lengthy pub crawl and had no intention of showing any consideration to existing diners .

For them The Cholmondeley Arms was just another pub to stop at to cause as much disruption as possible and to spoil the diners enjoyment and the quiet company visitors to the Cholmondeley Arms had become accustomed to take for granted. 

I suppose this rowdy , yobbish , loud-mouthed , loutish group were  unaware if  the impact they were having.

Thankfully , they only had one drink each , then the rowdy group could then move on in the hired  coach and move to next unsuspecting country pub and disturb their peace and quiet .



Lunch spoilt by large rowdy group on pub crawl

We went today for lunch. The food was very good and very tasty.The service from taking the order to receiving the food was a long wait but the worst thing was that we were both cold.Its a big area and there appears to be only one open fire at one of the large dining areas. When you are sitting on a winter's day you need to be warm and today wasn't so cold !!
Please keep your customers warm.

Great lunch but wanted to get home to get warm

Popped in for a Sunday dinner following rave reviews online. We were not disappointed!! Food was beautiful and portions were generous. We have 4 places to eat in our village and this was cheaper than any of them. Drinks reasonably priced and staff attentive and polite(sadly not necessarily a given these days).Highly recommended and we will definitely return.Keep up the great work.

Sunday roast

For me and my friends this is the perfect pub. Pure class but not stuffy. Great food. Something to suit all tastes. Local suppliers....traditional with a twist. Relaxed yet buzzy atmosphere..Fabulous location.....am I biased? Yes. I grew up in Cheshire and was frequenting this place long before I should have been in its former life. The views and walks are stunning and Gin? Don't even start me offf!!!! Well worth the drive from Gloucestershire to visit regularly and lovely accommodation. Thank you!!

Satisfies on every level. Feels like home!

Had a great birthday lunch here today. It is a charming setting in the old school. Very busy at lunchtime but great service and delicious food. Not overpriced and highly recommended. If you have a chance, do make a stop here.

Really lovely pub

Stopped by after a long drive and thought the building looked delightful.  Greeted very warmly on arrival and shown to a free table, it was surprisingly busy.  If you love Gin this is the place to go!

Food was ordered and arrived piping hot. Beers were excellent and the gin and tonic I had was really nice, I wanted a lot more!

However, the stars of the show are the staff! I didn't get any names but there were 2 ladies with short hair and a younger lady. They made our afternoon! 

We will be back!

please don't go to this place in the cold! we tried to get warm by the fire, but the logs are soaking and put the fire out.  the puddings are rubber from microwave pudding. high end prices for low end experience. the whole pub was sat in their coats.

it is freezing cold

We came for our lunch with you 9th December 2022 (4 of us)as per this booking for my Mums 97th birthday.
We arrived at 1:30pm pub was busy ordering drinks & our meals with 10 minutes of us arriving. We only ordered a main course from the menu. Drinks arrived no problem but we waited until 2.45pm for the meals, lady came to us about 20 minutes before this saying our meals were being plated up…obviously not this wasn’t happening.
When they did eventually arrive the plates were barely warm & 3 of the meals were only just warm, so maybe they had been plated up a while before hand. We didn’t complain but nobody asked if the meals were ok either.
When I went to pay there was someone else complaining about the service they had received & the same lady said that a lot of people had come in at the same time…this I can understand if we hadn’t booked in advance but as we had I would have assumed we would have been served prior to walk in customers.
After waiting I asked the same lady for the bill she went to print it off & then strangely instead of bringing it to me just gave it to a young lad who had just appeared behind the bar & she just walked away. He had no idea who this was for or why he had been given it.
I then gained his attention & said I think that’s for me to pay.
I must say it wasn’t the service I had expected or hoped for especially as it was for a special occasion

Not a great experience for us

Visited Friday 25th November as a couple and cocker spaniel owing to the fact pub is very dog friendly. I had the fish and chips my wife steak pie. Food and service was excellent. Big thanks to Becky and her team . Definitely will be visiting again. 10/10
