We have stayed here numerous times and always loved it.

However this time was not good enough at all, doubt I’ll go back.

Firstly, the rooms are not cleaned to a standard you would wish - especially for the money that you pay.

The bathroom was dirty, full of grime and our shower was leaking. The floor was soaking wet as the shower was leaking through the doors and onto the floor. The smell in the bathroom was unpleasant - strong musty smell.

Everything looks like it needs a refurbishment - the bathroom mirror looked so tacky and unkempt, the shower looked like it had not been cleaned in years!!

I know with places like this you do have to provide everything food and drink wise but they don’t even leave you a tea bag? We had to drive to Morrisons which was 20 minutes away to get tea bags, surely for the price you can provide tea bags? They are 60p a pack! 

Our hot tub was far too hot and was told at reception to not touch the temperature controls - left the lid off for 1 hour and didn’t drop a single bit so therefore was so uncomfortable to get in to and we could not relax at all so overall went in there for a total of an hour. 

I’m not sure whether they have new management - but the staff did come across very rude and unhelpful and just wanted you out of reception as quickly as possible.

Also, if you’re taking your dog - please make sure they are well behaved when off the lead. As there are no gates or entrances to separate cabins, a dog just wondered in to our cabin and jumped on our bed with muddy paws and would not get out. The owner did eventually get the dog out but we ended up sleeping in filthy bedding! 

Won’t be returning, don’t waste your money. Complete rip off now if you ask me. Such a shame because this was always our special place. Suppose we will find a better one with more value for money.

The lodge was absolutely filthy, I took several photos and sent them over to the customer services email numerous times and had no response. Dog hairs on the cooker and the kitchen work tops, in the shower, slugs, dirty socks left in the draw, dust everywhere in the lodge. The bed sheets looked dirty like they had been slept in and not changed from previous guests. Lodge was run down and had mold in places. I have sent many emails had no response and my stay was last year. I do not recommend a visit here don’t waste your money!

Disgusting customer service and disgusting lodge!

I was so anxious after my fiancé booked this for me for my birthday and considered even cancelling before we came but I am so glad we didn't. I really can't understand all the negative reviews that have been left.  We stayed in the starling pod and brought our 9 month old baby with us. We had plenty of room and everything that we needed e.g kettle, microwave etc. We didn't use the other kitchen stuff as we hired the bbq. The bbq was clean and ready to use and cooked the food well. 

Hot tub was amazing. Nice and clean and ready to go when we arrived. Also saw the guy coming round in the morning checking the ph levels and making sure it was okay. The decking area was also spotless. We absolutely loved the ducks coming up to us and the geese. 

Lovely walk around the ground and gorgeous views. 

I have to say we saw loads of cleaners and maintenance workers and the grounds themselves are all well kept and tidy.

We have no issues with cleanliness and I am fussy! There was no mould, no bad smells, no dirt leftover from previous guests. It was clean and perfect for our stay. 

The only negatives I can say and this is if I'm really nit picking, could do with more lighting on the decking as really dark and the fairy lights don't provide much brightness so we didn't use the hot tub once it got dark as couldn't see much. 

Also we had issues where the WiFi wouldn't connect to some of the devices. Tried to call reception but no answer, we weren't there to sit on the internet so it wasnt a major issue for us.

It would be nice to have some sort of umbrella or canopy over the hot tub as it's rained all day and not really much to do. 

Also check in is 4pm and check out is 10am. I think for the price of the lodges per evening it's on the expensive side. 

I would probably stay again

I don't get all the bad reviews. We liked it.

We had such a wonderful time. The surroundings are lovely, the lodge was super cosy and the hottub being such a a lovely relaxing addition. We really enjoyed the quiz night in the tipi and the staff were so welcoming and lovely and we cannot wait to book again!!

Booked this trip for my boyfriend’s Birthday last November and we are not fussy people I’ve never left a bad review for anywhere. We’ve stayed in a lot of hot tub lodges.

We nearly left early a few times.

Firstly, paid for early check in. Was let into the lodge and it was dirty. There were wet towels on the floor and used bedding. Someone then knocked the window to ask are we leaving soon because the lodge needed cleaning. 
We then waited in the car with the dog for an over an hour because it was raining whilst they quickly cleaned it. We Let that slide.

The decking to the lodge was so slippy in the rain. It had no signs to warn and with my hands full and treading carefulling I stupidly fell. 

Secondly when being let back in only for a maintenance man passing would we have know that a couple times a month the water changes colour and hot tub becomes GREEN! They said they had no control over this due to nearby water supplier but to not let us know and to not inform us before booking shocked us. We weren’t allowed to drink any water or use it for cooking. Shower water was green and so was the hot tub.  They were unable to tell us how long it would be for. They provided us with bottled water 2 hours after arriving and even though they said the water was safe to shower and to go in the hot tub it wasn’t very appealing when the water looks dirty and you’ve paid for a hot tub lodge ! Nothing was offered in the form of compensating this

At this point we weren’t enjoying ourselves and told a refund was not available as per booking policy. 

Communication is awful. The phone lines to the reception weren’t working and due to there being a rush in the cleaning and turnover a lot of things were missed. I had to go to reception 3 times to ask things like with WiFi passwords. 

The overall vibe was just low. Im sure on a different day it would have been a new experience as the site was lovely  but I won’t be returning. 
It was a lot of money and bad customer service.

Be aware GREEN WATER in hot tubs regularly

Took my partner and the dog away to herons retreat mid week for a few days away and to celebrate birthday! 
We stayed in the mallard cabin which can sleep up to 4. Very spacious and cute and cosy for us two and the dog.
Out of all the cabins in the retreat felt this one had more privacy which we wanted.
Made up it was pet friendly and had a hot tub.

Tlc on the cabin needed felt like 10 years ago would have been luxury retreat but needs so attention.

Bathroom door was faulty and the shower head you had to hold, cooker light and not all of the fairy lights working, all walls need a lick of paint. Felt there was a damp smell but due to us having a pet friendly cabin did not raise this we went out and bought some scented candles to cancel the smell and we got used too! 
Inside the wardrobe there was old wall paper and old fashioned in the spare room.

Would visit again if they offered a cheaper room in sale to take the dog for a night away. 

The cabins that are not pet friendly might be more luxury but I can not comment on them.

The room stunk of cannabis because of the cabin next door all i could smell was weed as i had the windows open then to top it of i cleaned up and left the cabin cleaner then i found it as it was already very dirty and full of dog hairs  the oven was full of grease and hot tub had all dirt in the bottem i didnt take pics of these as i wasnt goin to slate them online untill i left and got a invoice they taken money out of my bank account and kept my deposit over a smell of cannabis witch was there before i even got there i rang up to explain it had nothing to do with me i was abused on the phone by the manager and told the police was being called. im shocked my girlfreind is pregnant and i dont smoke plus we had a 2 year old baby so being accused is really quiet upseting and its ruined are weekend

We stayed in hawk lodge.it was absolutely terrible.filthy through out .couldn’t eat anything hot .as the oven was full of greece.and the bbq was even worse.couldn’t use the outdoor area as was that bad.for mold leaves and just dirt .and spiders cobwebs everywhere.we didn’t stay.as it was that bad .so we went home.over £400 for a run down dirty lodge .with mold .still not dealt with my complaint.told I’d get phone call twice .still not had .and one email .offering me £50off another stay .as if I want to go again .worst exsperience ever .it was a treat for my I’ll mum .amd she was so upset .

Worst place I’ve ever stayed avoid

We stayed in Woodpecker lodge on the lake. It desperately needs a new bathroom, sink plug broken and really slow to drain out. The shower pole kept falling out of the bracket therefore the shower head wouldn’t stay up. The bath plug adapter had come away so couldn’t get a bath. 
There was no clothes rail to dry any towels we had used after the hot tub, tried the dryer but had it on for 2 hours and they still came out wet. So damp towels hanging around the lodge. No mop or bucket to clean the floor because it was raining so the floor was wet in the lodge. 
Had to go and buy a roasting dish, and a spatula as there wasn’t any and there was only one pan so had to buy one of those as well. The fridge door didn’t have a holder to put milk or juice so they leaked when we lay them on the shelf.

lovely location and thats about where the good commend end. Filthy lodge, mould and damp everywhere. Verbally abusive staff who couldnt run a bath never mind a guest focused establishment. Customer service? None existent I was promised an investigation upon raising my complaint and instead have received total silence, but would you believe they are not too busy to keep posting on social media advertising their hell hole of a property. False advertisement at its finest. There is absolutely no regard for the people staying there, all they are interested in is taking your money, as soon as an issue arises you are completely ignored and forced to take legal action and take to social media to get a response. Still waiting. I advise anyone to reconsider booking this place. Chairs were absolutely filthy, bathroom seal repulsive with mould and just general scum. Threadbare curtains and the smell from the drains was enough to turn anyones stomach. Cheap fairy lights around the decking does not make up for the mold, verbally abusive staff and overall unwelcome atmosphere of the place. As the saying goes, you cant polish a turd.
