I don't know where some of the previous reviewers stayed, but it certainly could not have been the same place we have just left.
We booked for 3 nights Thursday 14th - Sunday 17th to celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary,  but have come home today because we could not stand being there anymore. I understand exactly what 'gooneronthemove' said in the last review.
We arrived at around 3.30pm (30minutes earlier than we had stated in our booking) - had great difficulty in finding anyone to register with. After about 15minutes a young man introduced himself as the manager - took the payment via credit card then showed us to our room (No.13 !!!!!).
The room was reasonably clean but a bit jaded.
We tried for a drink at the bar before we went out for the night - the Red Lion did not serve food on Thursday - and the first pint I was served was decidedly off.  This was replaced but the next pint wasn't much better. We left and went out. 
It wasn't until nighttime we found how noisy the road was next to the room.
Breakfast - (a poor shadow of even the most basic continental breakfasts as I have ever had in my 81 years) - next morning was as gooneronthemove  has already described except they had run out of orange juice!!
We went out for the day and on our return at around 5pm we found the beds had been made but the ensuite still had our wet/damp towels in and the toilet had not been cleaned. I eventually found the manager and he brought fresh towels to our room except they were all still damp. I called him back and after a little argument he went away and agreed to bring another set of towels which still feel exactly dry so we put the over the heated towel rail in the ensuite to air.
We were supposed to stay another night on 16th but my wife said she could not stand being in the room for another night and as I was not feeling very well, we have abandoned our weekend away and are now back home.

Absolutely terrible!!

From our experience the pictures provided by the motel and the description are not accurate. We were shown to our room and as we walked in we could smell damp. There were several parts of the room that looked tired and could do with refurb. It was all clean but just needed  attention. The door of the bedroom is actually an outside door onto a path. The motel is next to the main road so noise is an issue. Then we went for breakfast...which,to be fair, is included in the price. Very basic and we had to hunt for staff if something needed replenishing. Staff were virtually non existent throughout our stay. The toast bread was your basic supermarket bread. Coffee,filter coffee. We decided not to  have an evening meal there due to the price......better options at the local pubs in the village. All this was disappointing as it has so much potential and in  brilliant location where you can catch a train into York for cheaper than parking there.

Poor and doesn't match the description or pictures

The red lion inn is quite simply one of the nicest places i have stayed in for a long time. The rooms were spotless with nice comfortable beds. The food was lovely as well with plenty of choices and the cooked breakfast was outstanding.
But the thing that puts the red lion inn at the top of my list is the staff nothing was a bother everyone was so helpful and happy at their work. I would 100% recommend this fantastic inn to everyone.

One of the nicest places I have stayed at

What beautiful surroundings with the loveliest, manageress, staff, and food.
Brand new menu with every  item sounding even more delicious than the last. My husband and I have eaten all over the country but this meal will stay with us forever. The thought, passion, love, and skill that has gone into this menu shines through, and we were lucky and blessed to visit 
Duck bon bons for him and carpaccio starter for myself were our choice with the carpaccio taking the gold with a taste explosion in each mouthful, followed by guinea fowl and the fillet steak, both of which, absolutely faultless and filling but then after a word in our ear from our lovely and attentive waiter, we chose from the HOMEMADE dessert menu...the bread and butter pudding was so good, i could cry HOWEVER salted caramel cheesecake...Well, I have no words other than DO IT. 
At any given opportunity, we will visit again and urge everyone else to do so too. You will jot regret it.

A must visit

Last week we had dinner to say it was poor is a bit kind we were so disappointed the service was so slow, and the food very underwhelming we can’t recommend you and won’t be returning.I’m very sorry to say.

Underwhelmed

Just returned from a very enjoyable, 2 night, stay at the Red Lion.  We had planned a family get together with sightseeing in York, the Christmas market and Rail museum but the weather washed out all but the museum!  Thankfully the welcome at the Red Lion went a long way to make up for the disappointment we felt.  All the team beginning with the “boss,” Adrian, were very friendly and provided a warm welcome.  Jess and Henning couldn’t have been more welcoming, we were made to feel more like family than customers, and the brief sightings of chef David were accompanied by a smile and a wave.  The food was good, so David was definitely doing his part in making our stay enjoyable, the beer was equally appreciated and as we were staying overnight no concerns about overindulging. Breakfast provided a treat when Adrian described the egg royale as having his “home smoked” salmon!  Lets just say that we enjoyed it so much we repeated the experience the following morning (what about putting home smoked salmon on the main menu Adrian?).
The bedrooms were large with brilliant white bedding on a very comfortable bed ensuring a good night’s sleep and all very reasonable priced.  What more could you want?  We will be returning, hopefully with better weather!

Friendly and welcoming staff

Night away for birthday, meal and overnight stay. Great staff, excellent food and comfortable bed. It was all so wonderful. Everyone made us welcome. Thanks to Adrian, Henry, David and Sheila. Totally recommend it if you want a special treat. Full English breakfast was amazing. Thanks again

Special birthday treat

This is an absolute hidden gem food is out of this world and would definitely come back staff are friendly and atmosphere is fantastic! 

Ordered slow cooked brisket literally melted away in my mouth, Every person who spoke to us was lovely and was friendly couldn’t ask for more

FANTASTIC!

This had only been taken over two weeks before we visited and for all it needs a little t l c and updating nothing was to much trouble met one of the owners . Ate here and the food was lovely with definitely be going back to see what they have done very close to park and ride which is great to go into york

Very good experience

We booked 3 rooms at The Red Lion for 4 nights for work. Couldn’t be happier. Clean, comfy and the staff cannot do enough for you. Extremely friendly and will welcome you with open arms. Aidy, Erik and Henning and The Chef, all brilliant.

The food is excellent!!! The Chef loves food. You can tell by eating there. Homemade pies, freshly cooked meats, nothing pre made or packaged, like you can receive in some places. Fine ingredients for very reasonable prices. 

We have booked for next weeks work stay also. So glad we did. I will be coming back with the mrs and friends when the races at Wetherby or York (or both) are on.
