When we originally booked this hotel it never mentioned our hotel was across the road. Need another bedside table as not enough room to put anything. Bed is comfy enough. Bathroom is dire. Tried to have a bath but after over half an hour wouldn't even bath my toe. The plug has rusted up so the water will just run down it clearly not been checked. The tiles are coming up. The door sticks so you keep catching your foot and hip on it. Toilet roll is so poor. Needs a bath mat as slippy and deep. The handle is too high no one would be able to get out of it if old or disabled. Also door buzzer does not always open it as had to come through the pub once. Should have a lift to rooms as if accompanied by old people would not get up it. Breakfast was acceptable but not particular nice. Very dry scrambled egg sausages chewy no hash browns. Beans dry. Should have choice of orange juice with no bits. Toast machine works but have to put your hand under which could be hot so is a safety hazard. Not a bad area. Quite dark room no central light and reading light broke. TV a good size

Poor hotel

Very dirty hotel. Rude staff at the main reception who can be heard up 3 flights of stairs bad mouthing the guests who dare to ask why their room hadnt been cleaned when the sign was on the door. The mattress in my daughters room was badly stained. Please think twice about staying here!!!!!!! Her room was in the cairn which is supposed to be the better one. The carlton definately no better which was where I was located. Do us a favour and shut these hotels down until they have totally refurbished, trained staff on customer relations and provided the rooms with the bare minimum like an unstained mattress. My pets sleep on much better.

Is  very probably the worst expensive hotel I ever stayed in OR the most expensive bad hotel, same difference , see the photos , £175 per night for a cramped room above a noisy bar plus crap bathroom. 

Most expensive bad hotel ever

Pokey, dirty, noisy and smelly and if you’ve booked the Cairn don’t think you’ll be staying there ! I’d paid £117 for a room at The Cairn only to be moved to The Carlton. Barely enough room to move and a three quarter sized bed. Rubbish still in the bin and walls filthy. Demanded a refund so we will see if “Head Office” agree it. The move to the Carlton seems to be a regular occurrence……………

Absolute waste of money

I cannot stress too strongly how bad this hotel is. Rude and unhelpful staff. Rooms in dire need of updating, corridor carpets in a dangerous state of causing a trip hazard. We mistakenly paid for a breakfast at the sister hotel, the Cairn, please don't bother, the Cafe Nero just up the road provides much better quality food!

Do not stay here

I’ve worked in a hotel for over two years so I’m pretty forgiving with hotels as I understand a great deal,
But this stay wasn’t nice, bath plug didn’t work and It was hard to work, yeah I understand different rooms are in different buildings but we were put in a completely different hotel??  to turn on and off the tv we had to reach our hand right behind the wall as the remote did nothing but change the channel, the walls are incredibly thin, you can here everything!  Tried to call front desk but no one picked up :/ not staying again we have a 4.5 hour drive back to London tomorrow on no sleep

Very unpleasant

What a horrible smelly pokey little hole this is. Arrived to check in to be sent over the road to the Carlton building. It’s above a very noisy bar. The corridor stank of weed or raw sewage. No fresh towels even though I requested them, room wasn’t cleaned for the 4 nights we stayed. No fresh bedding. Bathroom had a disgusting smell every time you ran water. Car parking is a joke- once you’re in you are likely trapped as cars park directly behind you and the staff don’t seem to like asking people to move. At 5 pm on a Saturday night.

Heinous. Stay away.

Eggy noisy hovel

Stayed here on short notice booking as hotel we original booked to be at great North run was shut down a month ago! We checked in at reception at the cairn hotel over the road. We had already got a ncp carpark booked 20 mins walk away so we still used this as comments on carpark here didn't read very positive. Room was spotless, plenty of room. Large very comfy bed. Nice white fluffy towels. Great shower. Huge TV. Yes we were right over the busy bar (room 403) but music stopped dead on 11. Great location for metro, good eateries, Waitrose across the road for breakfast bits..the hotel did not say anything about breakfast options. Negatives...I felt it was a bit expensive for a basic hotel ( paid £130 per night room only) ... Only had 2 shampoos and one soap but did get shower gel when I requested the next day on a top up request sheet.x

Better than I thought after reading some reviews

Can’t understand all the negative reviews about this hotel? I think people think they are booking the sister hotel, The Cairn, over the road. You aren’t and your booking form should stipulate the Carlton or the Cairn. From the outside The Carlton does not look much. However, the family room inside was fantastic and freshly renovated. You get free parking here. Some spaces require you to double park, but we managed to get a single private space. TIP: if you arrive early, we arrived at 12pm, you can ask to drop your car off. There are many free single spaces. The hotel is above a busy bar, but it closes at 11pm and didn’t cause us any issues at all. Bed, very comfortable, lovely big bathroom. Located in an affluent area of Newcastle. We didn’t bother booking breakfast as the hotel is next to Cafe Nero and Greggs bakers plus a Tesco. Much cheaper and much tastier. Hotel is only doing continental breakfast in a bag, which is a shame considering restrictions have now been removed. Staff are lovely here and very helpful and friendly. I recommend this hotel and still can’t understand the negative reviews.

Nice hotel

What a shocker of a room! Nothing like the photos on the website, this room is in desperate need of updating. Absolutely awful location, the door was right next to the public toilets. Fortunately staff were lovely and were able to move us to the Cairn, which was lovely.
