Stayed  here with my wife for 5 days when visiting my daughter place really needs a facelift carpet thread bare in places rooms tired good breakfast staff pleasant except for a chef that nearly knocked my wife of her feet in a corridor upstairs when I held the door open for her he just pushed through walking  into her no apology at all very ignorant room we stayed in  very small overlooking the courtyard kitchen extractor fan heard running from 6 in the morning to late had asked for a quite room don't  think we would stay her again .

The sooner it closes for the new owners to do it up the better.The staff know this and it is reflected in attitude. No one gives a monkeys.It feels like you are going to a shop thats about to go bust. Why put a completely untrained under age person behind a Bar? I felt sorry for him he got into a panic....with no help from his colleagues. There is no management to complain too. Change the name to The Shambles.

Its going to be done up soon....but that's no excuse.

I asked for an Old Fashion. They pretended to know what it was, but then served me a single shot of bourbon with some ice in a snifter...

I tell the bar tenders that I was not served an Old Fashion. They then ask me how to make an Old Fashion. I explain; syrup or sugar cube, bitters, bourbon, orange. They dont know what bitters are. 
This is not the staff's fault. The management, primarily the Chief Executive, Nole, has failed the employees. How is a business supposed to be successful if the front-line doesn't have the tools to execute the objective? 
This needs to be addressed or the Rutland will fail.

Piss-Poor Management

Beds are very uncomfortable, springs poking in my back all night. Woke up with bad back, rooms are very old and need updating. Breakfast wasn’t much better, undercooked eggs and cold. Paid £160 for one night which is very overpriced for what it is. Wouldn’t stay again.

the receptionist looked down her nose at us as soon as we arrived and I had to ask for all information including breakfast. food was good in the restaurant but over priced. rooms were average and the hotel looked better from the outside.

Have eaten here before, and it's been less than overwhelming. However, the kitchen seems to have upped its game. Great setting, too. Eat in the courtyard if it's warm enough. Very pleasant. Recommended as long as they maintain this standard.

Surprisingly good

I have never ever written a review before but think this hotel is so appalling that i decided enough is enough !!  This hotel is the worst hotel i've ever stayed in, it is dirty, very outdated and very overpriced, which they are clearly only getting away with because they are one of a limited number of hotels in Newmarket that people have to stay in if they want to go to Newmarket Races.  The room that we stayed in had dirty sheets, the headboard on the bed was absolutely filthy, the mattress was so old that you could feel the springs and couldn't even breathe without it creaking.  The bathroom had hair on the floor, and the toilet roll holder was broken so instead of replacing it they had just thrown it on the floor.  The mirrors were filthy and looked like they had 50 years of dust on them, the window was broken so it didn't shut properly, and everything in the room was old, chipped or broken.

We arrived back to the hotel after eleven pm so rung on the buzzer for the night porter to let us in, stood there in the pouring rain for nearly 20 mins by which time other hotel guests had also joined the queue to get in and when the night porter finally turned up, we said we'd been standing out for ages and his response was "Well you haven't have you" !! He couldn't have cared less and when some of the guests pulled him up on his attitude he said "complain about it in the morning then".

Now i come to breakfast which was a complete shambles, they serve you tea and toast but there's no milk or butter to be found, so after asking 3 times they finally bring it over 15 mins later by which time the tea & toast are cold.  They then served the full english breakfast and when we asked for the baked beans like it says on the menu comes with the english breakfast, the waitress went away for 10 mins and then came back and slammed it on the table, as if we were asking for something extraordinary !!

Overall this is a very overpriced hotel which anywhere else in the country would not still be open because they would have no guest left and just rely on the Newmarket Races as people have no option but to stay there.

Worst Hotel I've Ever Stayed In

Agree with many other comments, due to racing they seem to be able to get away with it. Toilets unclean , The bed had been broken and repaired with tape. Bathroom grubby , Old tiles with cracks and stains. Had to sleep with sash windows open. Woken at 7am on a sunday by road sweeper going up and down. DONT book a room overlooking the main road

Not at all impressed. Upon seeing the colour of my skin on arrival, it became hotel policy to pay for the room in full up front. A policy that did appear yo apply to my white colleague who arrived shortly after. Having popped out to the shop and returning i was then challegend as to my reason fo being in the hotel

at one point I did consider going to the courtyard to burn sage and dance around chicken bones!
