Everything is great in this house :  atmosphere, bed-room, information about restaurants, we had good feelings. We spoke easily with the owner even our french language is not so good...thanks for the breakfast menu we can choose.

We have now stayed at the Martineau on 5 or 6 occasions as our daughter lives in s small flat locally. We have always found it to be warm, comfortable and very welcoming. The rooms are well furnished and provided with the small luxuries of life in terms of tea, toiletries and biscuits. The location of the hotel is perfect, being right in the middle of town and minutes away from the beach. Not sure what Adrian Mole 72 was talking about with regard to the breakfast as these are exemplary; you can choose from fresh fruit or cereals, then have a cooked breakfast (personal favourite is scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and avocado) followed by homemade bread and a selection of at least 6 homemade jams! To be honest, after that lot, you don’t need to bother with lunch. As far as the rooms are concerned, they are not refurbished and modern as you would expect from a 4 star hotel but they are cosy, clean and well equipped, which is what I would expect from a bed and breakfast. The showers need a bit of attention as they have a pressure issue but that may be due to the age of the property and the available facilities. Sally the landlady is genuinely friendly and will ask about the family, update you on local issues and direct you to places of interest whilst cooking you a delicious breakfast. We travel a lot and frankly this is considerably better than some 3 star hotels we have stayed in, even more when you consider the price. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a good B and B in this area.

Friendly, comfortable home from home

My wife and I stayed there for a long weekend in Tynemouth. We stayed in the Priory room, named for good reason. The views of the Tyne were spectacular. I would estimate a 140' degree view of the river and environs. Our room was more then comfortable and cosy. No noise and had an all round peaceful aura. Bed very comfortable and we slept well every night. Our host greeted us with her right arm in a sling and explained that the previous night she had a fall and had broken her arm and was now awaiting surgery. We said 'don't worry about breakfast, we'll go and and get something elsewhere - no problem'. She was obviously in a lot of pain. We were about to get bedded down for the night only to be told to fill in the breakfast form for breakfast! On going down to breakfast we were presented with a breakfast to die for. The choice of options was more than comprehensive and all locally sourced. Nothing frozen and so tasty. Sausage, bacon, egg, mushrooms, tomato, baked beans and fried bread - but that was only one of the options. The home-made potato cake was delicious as was the home-bread. On our last morning I had a kipper. It was more like two kippers in one and made me drool somewhat when it was presented to our table. This is an intimate guest-house and the attention to detail and cooking was definitely 5 star. Don't waste your pennies going anywhere else-you will not be disappointed.

Fabulous

We have stayed at the Martineau on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed.We had two rooms , one overlooking the Main Street in Tynemouth and one at the back with a great view over the river.Both rooms were spotless and very comfortable.There was a great selection on the breakfast menu including local fish and an extensive range of home made jams.Sally is a great host who has always made us feel very welcome

Room was nice, but could have done with a dust, as there were a lot of cobwebs. Bathroom in need of an update - shower not very powerful.

Breakfast ok,nothing special (even though people rave about the sausages) but, as others have stated, the breakfast are is small, but very clean and well presented.I like a bit of peace at mealtimes - I'm aware we could have continental breakfast in our room, but I don't like that. 

Landlady seemed friendly, but not entirely sure it was genuine.
