Came for a wedding here. It was better than expected. Usually when you go to posh hotels out in the sticks it's overpriced flat beer but this place wasn't. The drinks were nice and reasonably priced. The food was good and service was very good to. We were outside in the sunshine in the afternoon and really enjoyed the table service. I guess that will finish now restrictions are lifted. The hotel itself  was a good venue for the wedding. Very well organised even with a few restrictions. Nice hotel in a nice setting. 

Family wedding. 

We are so incredibly happy that we chose Cockliffe Country House for our wedding venue. It is in such a remote, country setting with modern decor inside just perfect for a wedding.

We cannot fault anything about our experience; Nadia was absolutely fantastic from start to finish, handling any questions we had no matter how small - incredibly professional and we felt in very good hands. Emma was there on the day as the main point of contact and did an amazing job - we were very lucky to have these two great women on hand!

We felt like the staff handled the wedding breakfast very well for 60 people, bringing the food out in a timely fashion and attending to special dietary requirements for some of our guests as per information we provided. The food was great and enjoyed by all.

Thank you to all of the Cockliffe team for helping us achieve our dream wedding.

I would highly recommend this beautiful country house for a wedding venue!

Amazing Wedding Venue

I don't enjoy being critical, but I hope the constructive feedback I'm giving will be taken as it is intended.
I'd booked at fairly short notice due to a change in my work schedule and was looking forward to staying at somewhere different to my normal hotels - i.e. the corporate, branded types. Things didn't start out well as there was no one on reception when I arrived (circa 7pm) but a note on the desk directed me to ring for someone. I did but no one came, so I had to wander the hotel, bar and restaurant to find a member of staff. When I did find someone, she was very courteous and professional and showed me to my room - an annexe in one of the buildings alongside the hotel. I'd paid for breakfast but when she said it was served from 7:30am I pointed out that I'd be at work by then. Ok, so whilst disappointing that wasn't the end of the world. But I had been looking forward to breakfast at the hotel. We walked to an external building at the side of the hotel where there were several rooms in what looked to be a converted stable or something similar. Inside the room looked great, well-appointed and despite not having a desk to work at (I travel for business) there didn't seem to be anything to worry about. However later in the evening a lady staying in the adjoining room arrived and proceeded to have a phone conversation with someone, not loud or shouting, just a normal conversation. Due to the poor sound insulation I could every word as though she was sitting next to me. Not very private and so I turned the TV up in an attempt to drown out her voice and so I couldn't hear what she was saying. I then got into bed and nearly sank into what was a very soft mattress. Ok, so I like a firm mattress and you can't win every time, but this one was very uncomfortable. This problem was made worse when I realised that my feet hung over the edge of the bed - I'm just under 6' tall, so not a giant by any means. It was a cold night so when the temperature dropped the room became very cold. The central heating had turned off by this point and the wall-mounted air-con unit didn't seem to want to work no matter what I did.
Ok, so having had a poor night's sleep I got up at 6am to have a shower. Unfortunately, the shower didn't have any hot water and when switched to the bath tap it only produced a trickle. Nothing I could use. Mindful that everything I did would be heard by the lady next door I quietly had a wash at the basin, packed my things and went to reception to check out. Again, there was no one there and I could see no one in any of the other rooms, so I left.
So, whilst I didn't get to the see the main hotel and I'm sure in the summer this place would a great spot to spend the night, my experience isn't one I will be repeating. Maybe my issues were all one-offs and I just dropped unlucky, but there are some fundamental issues to address with the accommodation in the external buildings.
Sadly, I wouldn't recommend staying at the Cockliffe House Hotel and I won't be returning. Thankfully I'm in a proper hotel tonight and will be catching up on my sleep!

Very disappointing stay

Food was good, although forgot the vegetables!!!, the rest of the place was pretty much below average. We attended a wedding function which was great. Not one I want to recommend, they seem to rely on their reputation, which is not as good as they thought

Pretty average

The hotel is beautiful.
Not happy that we had to go outside to get to our room when it was raining. No umbrella offered.
Having to come back out for dinner 👎
I feel any other hotel would of made sure we had a room inside
The excuse was that they were fully booked
There was only 3 guest!!
The food I had was not so great the lamb was burnt along with the mushrooms and the gravy was salty 
I felt we were being rushed the manager standing at the door making me feel uncomfortable 
Maybe a bit more customer care no matter who you are!!!
Please note this is just my experience staying at this hotel.

Poor customer service 👎

“Wow”, what a surprise... the Cockliffe Country House Hotel is a hidden gem: I write this to complement the staff that made us welcome on a dark January Saturday. 

The hotel wasn’t over busy which is a surprise considering how good the menu was; we shared starters which included “Roasted rainbow cauliflower, cauliflower puree, cheese crisp” and “Smoked salmon tiane, pickled beetroot, watercress” which delighted our pallets.

I was initially disappointed to learn that the “Jacobs ladder beef rib, pomme puree, red wine jus” was off the menu and so went with the “Roasted hake, butterbean and tomato stew, coriander pesto & micro coriander” my companion had chosen......

Wow,... this dish had it all for us, the explosion of complimentary flavours is hard to describe.... It was just brilliant.

Heather and her team front of house did everything to make our visit comfortable. I believe she was dropped in the “deep end” and was a little out of her comfort zone... she needs to be commended. As does the young Chef, who we asked to see, for the quality of the fare.

As I stated at the head of this review... this is a hidden gem..

As I paid my bill this morning, I noticed two different hotel awards from 2017, 2018 or 2018, 2019. Clearly well deserved, and therefore my/our experiences are a standard not an exception.

Thank you for a memorable evening, I look forward to visiting the Cockliffe Country House Hotel again.



Birthday treat

Stayed here on a Thursday evening in December. 

The Good:

In its defence, the room and bathroom were clean, well furnished and the carpet and paint was in good condition. 

Dinner was good! We had only a main, the Jacobs ladder beef, kudos to chef. 

They have a lovely wine list with great prices. 

Friendly service. 

Breakfast had a great selection of cooked food. 

The setting itself, is lovely. Smack dab in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by beautiful fields and it is peaceful and quiet. 

The Not So Good:

Booked a Superior Double room, their midrange room option. Emphasis is on the word Double as that is what size the bed was. Not a King, not 2 twins pushed together, a UK small double bed. We are talking less than 4 feet across. Small. So small that my husband and I haven’t been so close to each other since our wedding night.

The bathroom was functional, if not dated (I have never had the pleasure of using a peach coloured toilet before - fab - would have been even better if the toilet seat had stayed attached to the commode). 

The windows were extremely difficult to open, now that they’re open, I don’t think they will ever fully shut again. 

The service was friendly, but sparse, and a little rough around the edges. There was no bartender at the bar. 

We enjoyed a 2012 Bordeaux for £29.95, it was unfortunate and yet oddly entertaining that the server literally plonked it down already uncorked on the table and then just  turned and walked away...

Breakfast - My Eggs Royale were heavy on the ‘Royale’ but only came with half of a lukewarm poached egg - I waited 25 minutes for this. My husband’s omelette was shaped like a pancake, but was at least hot and quite tasty. 

All in all, we wouldn’t go back, unless maybe they decided to put at least King Size beds in the rooms. 

Just Shabby, No Chic 

I am writing this review on behalf of my mother (who I’ve never known complain before) who booked this venue several months before her birthday for 27 people and a per-order was submitted.
The overall experience for the price paid was exceptionally poor - 3 pre ordered starters were wrong, we had a copy of our orders when we arrived, food was of very poor quality, the vegetables were served after many had already finished their main course, the new potatoes had hard skins due to being over cooked, the chicken was so over cooked it was difficult to cut and some of the main courses were barely warm.
The venue was very cold.
Mum paid over £1,000 and feels very let down, as some of her guests have also written letters complaining  of their dissatisfaction.
Cheap ingredients, poor meal and poor service.
I would NOT recommend anyone booking a party at this venue.

DISGUSTED

All staff were helpful, friendly and very accommodating the room was lovely and clean with a great shower and comfortable bed. The breakfast in the morning was beautifully done with plenty to fill you up for the day. I would definitely recommend and I would stay again.

Lovely get away

Didn’t know what to expect from the reviews but this place is lovely.
We were nicely greeted and taken through to our room in a small annex.
The bedroom was very nicely presented with a separate seating area and reasonable sized bathroom.  All were very clean.  The bathroom had a heated floor which was very welcome as we have stopped in annexes before where the tiles were just too cold.
Evening meal was really very nice, each course was very tasty from venison starter to cheeseboard.  Drinks and wine were all reasonable for this type of hotel.
Breakfast was not quite as well organised, with our group of 4 having to sit at separate tables as we were not expected as a group and items being taken to the wrong table, but the food again was very nice and the staff friendly.
Staff were all very friendly throughout, don’t always expect to find staff on the desk but there was always someone not far away to sort out any issues.
Overall a lovely stay.  Would definitely recommend.  Would also recommend just for a meal as the restaurant was quaint and lovely for a romantic meal.
