What has happened to Marsdens? We had a shocking experience. We had pre booked several days before as a few weeks ago we couldn’t get a meal without booking (even though the pub was empty!!). The first disappointment was they had no Sunday dinner left (it is advertised on the menu as ALL DAY Sunday roast!! So, my husband plumped for fish and chips, what could go wrong there? No fish OR CHIPS left!! OMG how can a restaurant like this run out of chips?? there were several other things not available on the menu also. My husband had hunters chicken and asked for a side salad with extra onion. The chicken breast was a skinny thing, half a breast at best! They had run out of chips so he had sweet potato fries, which were overcooked and hard. The salad was a bit of limp leaf and a tiny bit of onion. I had the sausage and mash. Again, I asked for an extra portion of veg and when my meal came it was a portion of mash which looked like it had been stewing for hours, like gloop with three overcooked sausages and Aldi instant type gravy, no onion in it. The extra veg was a few peas tipped on the side (actually the best part of the meal.) We both complained and I received a bowl of totally overcooked mange tout and green beans, which looked like again they had been sitting since dinner time. The waitress said they had no onion left. We had been working hard all day and were starving, the only reason we ate this mess of a plate of food. A lady came out at the end and made the mistake of asking us if everything had been ok? We complained again and she brought out a fresh bowl of salad with a whole onion chopped up in it!! So they did have onion after all!! By this time we were frankly thoroughly peed off and just left. If we hadn’t already paid for the food we wouldn’t have, it was proper pants!!

I will be contacting head office about this terrible experience, a stock so sorry by the manager is NOT fixing these problems. The lady who talked to us said there was no chef in, well why not let us know so we could have eaten elsewhere!!

Shocking experience

Advertised as “ live dogs” and dog friendly. We booked with our little dog in tow , travelled 5 hours only to be told they don’t accept dogs !  Need to alter their description!!  They are NOT dog friendly . 

Disappointing

Lovely food very good atmosphere had a lovely steak that was cooked to perfection. 

Hotel was a lovely not heights sleep very warm and cozy

Views were amazing and the staff were very polite and attentive 

beautiful 

The whole place needs an uplift, which I appreciate in the current climate is maybe not cost effective…we stayed for 2 nights in room 4 listening to the drone of the extractor fans from the kitchen, which when we asked a member of staff  were assured they would be off by nine pm…why tell fibs lady !! There were light bulbs missing, and the shower left something to be desired running very hot then cold and grubby. Although in fairness the bed was huge and very comfortable.
We ate both evenings, and the food was ok for the price we payed and our drinks were fine.
Little bit of staff training wouldn’t go amiss, a couple of the staff although not rude, just didn’t seem to want to be there.
All in all our stay was ok, but we wouldnt go back.

We stayed for two nights and strangely the price of the room increased for the second night - should have queried before we left!

The cooked breakfast was excellent and was piping hot. We ate on the first night at the Unicorn but the restaurant was closed for our second evening but there is a choice of nearby places to walk or drive to.

Our room was clean. On the other hand the shower was in need of lots of TLC, the hose leaked and the black around the corners was a little off putting! It did run hot and cold but be aware that the sink's hot tap soon delivers scalding hot water. A lawyer would advise a warning notice I'm sure.

The bed had been changed and the double plus at the back were  now hidden BUT the bed was super comfortable.

Good value but bathroom needed lots of TLC

Avoid at all costs,crap service ,freezing cold food and the place was freezing cold.. 
Food was awful ..cold veg, overcooked tasteless chicken
Fish was grey,about 10 chips, cold mushy peas
Never again.

Awful

Came for lunch, inexpensive, the food was good, well presented and for £9, including half a chicken, really, really good value, will definitely return. Beer clean and crisp as was the wine. Thoughly recommended.

Lovely riverside setting
Ordered steak and chicken for me. Salmon salad for my partner. Extra chicken wings
Steak was  poorly cooked and chicken was very dry.
Salmon was just about cooked, and sent wings back to the kitchen. They were removed from our bill. Not enough staff to cover early evening shift, all racing around at 100 miles per hour...think twice before returning. Wouldn’t recommend early evening

Poor

Have just got back from another night here - room 14 - but this time we were a bit disappointed to find that the problem of the shower surround is no better. The mastic in one corner is covered in soap scum which seems to be set hard and now has a brown appearance. As for the side of the surround, well this has not been cleaned either: there are black patches showing. I am not a clean freak, but it doesn't look very nice. 

But that aside - we had dinner here which  was an improvement from last time we were here, so well done; and well done too to the young lady who not only booked us in when we arrived, but was also almost running the whole restaurant in the evening!! Breakfast was good too, so no complaints there.

Apart from the fact that perhaps the pillows need a bit of an upgrade, a pleasant time was had by all.

One of our favourite places but a few niggles this time around

Amazing location. Staff very friendly. Clean rooms but just a little bit dated. Amazing location. Went for a nice walk and was very impressed with the Area. Prices in bar were not tp expensive. Breakfast was very tasty and it is such a relaxing place to go to...
