Everything about The Star is effortless. It's tasteful and incredibly well-designed, but not in an overly fussy or overbearing way. It's all done so classically and so well. Why more hotels can't follow The Star's lead is a mystery. None of our group could find any faults with the hotel or restaurant during our stay - which is a credit to how well-conceived and managed this British gem is. We will definitely return, probably in the summer, mainly to enjoy the courtyard - although our winter stay was still truly comfortable and relaxing. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for their hard work and talents.

A perfect hotel

Huge congratulations to the   Chef! Our lunch today (19/12) was really excellent. Great service and a beautifully decorated hotel all contributed to our wonderful visit to The Star.
The hake was perfectly cooked, as were the scallops. My companions all enjoyed their chicken and beef dishes as well.

Truly excellent lunch!

Went for lunch on a cold winter day, so the log fire in the bar was very welcoming.  The service was professional and friendly, and the food really delicious.  All in all highly recommended. A small point - the wooden chairs become very uncomfortable after an hour or so….perhaps some cushion pads?

Very enjoyable 

Our third stay and as enjoyable as always . The staff are excellent : friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. Food superb and ambience just the right balance: relaxed and stylishly cosy.
Just two niggles : it would be great if a mini fridge could be put into the wardrobe: this would mean the fresh milk can last easily over night and the water chilled . On each stay the milk we receive on arrival has gone off by the morning and its a nuisance to call down for more and waste the milk from the previous afternoon . 
Second : robes : to not have robes is a bit of an oversight . Walking around  with a towel around you  is not great especially when you have to open the door early morning  to receive the fresh milk !!
As i say niggles . Great stay . Hopefully will be here again in August ( Glyndebourne needs to provide the tickets !)
 

Another enjoyable stay 

We stayed here for one night, which was a gift from our daughters. The whole experience was a delight. Every member of staff we interacted with was pleasant, friendly and helpful, the hotel itself was very attractively decorated and the room was perfect in every respect. We intend to return, even if only to enjoy the food, which we both thought was cooked, presented and served perfectly. Thank you for a very enjoyable stay.

Delightful 

This is by far and above the best place that we’ve ever stayed.  The room was extremely comfortable and beautifully decorated.  Everything had been thought about to ensure the utmost comfort.  The menu was exactly to our liking and everything that we ate was really delicious - particularly enjoyed the pasta, brill and monkfish.  Without exception all of the staff went out of their to make our stay even more enjoyable.  Looking forward to our next visit!

Utterly superb!

Last night we dined at the Star where we found the ambience sublime, the service warm and friendly, the food beautifully presented, the tastes exquisite and the general manager (Sergio) attentive and welcoming. My daughter, who is vegan, was admirably looked after with a mouth-watering selection of dishes and for my wife and I, we enjoyed the scallops followed by the perfectly cooked griddled stone Bass. Sergio was a great host and with his wit and warmth we are sure to return again.

Superb food and service

Gorgeous setting and decor, super dog friendly, nice rooms and fast service but the thing that let it down so much was the food. We ordered and it seemed to come out in minutes (which is always suspicious). My veggie main was lukewarm so I sent it back. The replacement was slightly warmer but £32 for half a stuffed pepper with chewy spelt was not worth it. Disappointing. My partner meanwhile enjoyed his fish. Glad I ordered a side of fries else we would have been hungry.  Breakfast was better but the coffee was cold. Would I go again? Probably not as felt where the rooms were worth it, the meal hampered the experience.

Go for the room, not the meal

Just returned from a 2 night break at The Star Alfriston and thought I'd give a honest account of our stay.
The Star is absolutely stunning, we stayed in a Classic Juliet room which was lovely, the room was immaculate and the bedding was high quality and the room was well furnished. The shower was a rainfall and had  a seperare hand held one, my only issue was no shower caps supplied so this wasn't so great for people who don't want to get wet hair. Other toiletries were supplied which were really nice, so maybe they would consider shower caps in the future.
The staff were all amazing and super friendly, the service they supplied was very good and to high standard.
Breakfast on both mornings was lovely and locally sourced sausages, eggs and Bacon was great.
Evening meal we didn't think the menu had alot of choice so the first night we ate eles where, unfortunately on the night we did eat at The Star we found the food very salty, infact I wasn't able to finish mine as it was making me feel ill. This was reported to reception on our departure but not really dealt with adequately and kind of brushed under the carpet. The meals at The Star are quite high priced and we don't mind paying for it if it was good quality unfortunately the dinner wasn't upto our standards.
Unfortunately we wouldn't return due to the evening meal, which is a shame because it really a lovely hotel.
We walked over the Seven Sisters cliffs which we would recommend but we found walking anticlockwise was a steadier route.



The Star

A lovely relaxed ambience, friendly staff and absolutely delicious food, which ism just a little bit different. 

Our room was very comfortable with a lovely shower and nice toiletries. WE were a bit confused that no coffee  and cafetiere was provided with the tea tray. It seems one has to ask specifically for this, and we didn't realise until the morning when we wanted an early morning cup of coffee in bed! Fresh milk is provided on request which is nice. 

Both dinner and breakfast were lovely with some unusual but really delicious choices and all beautifully cooked
