This place has a lot of positives - good parking (but gets full quickly because it's popular), very friendly staff, great ambience, and ample food at a good price. When we were there, it was clear this an attractive venue for young families and the elderly. Lots of buzz. So why XXX? We found the food well cooked but very bland.

Food needs more flavour for us

First trip to The Crown.  Met friends for lunch.  It was ok.  The pub is old and atmospheric and we sat by the log fire for drinks first - lovely.
The food was alright, but (unusually for me), I found the portions huge!!  Shame they couldn’t do smaller versions for the lunch menu, consequently there was a lot of waste.

Lunch with Friends

I stayed in The Crown at Playhatch whilst in Reading to attend a business event.. I found The Crown really easy to deal with both prior to and during my stay..  On arrival i was shown to my room by a super friendly young lady.. everything explained..  she offered to book me a table for my evening meal etc.  My evening meal was excellent.. as was the service.. I was in a bit of a rush the following morning so had to rush my full English.. tho again, it was faultless.. Highly recommended..

The Crown at Playhatch.. Perfect for couples / business / weekend etc.. 

Booked a table in the restaurant to celebrate our Ruby anniversary with friends. The food was delicious, it came quickly and the staff were very attentive. Good atmosphere, altogether a really nice celebration. Thank you.

Lovely celebration meal.

We were warmly welcomed on arrival and shown to our rooms by a very personable and knowledgeable member of staff who clearly explained lots of useful information.  The room had everything we needed included toiletries, iron, fan and hospitality tray.  It might have been nice to have some hot chocolate sachets for our daughter but this is only a minor point.  The wi fi code in the rooms would also have been useful as we were not sure what it was.  There was a good selection at breakfast and the cooked breakfast was delicious as well as the staff being attentive and well organised. Overall, we had a great stay and wouldn't hesitate to return. Great stay and lovely breakfast

I’d like to start this off by saying that the pub itself, the food and staff were lovely. I could not fault any of this, but the rooms sadly let it down.

It was a nice surprise to find out that the rooms were almost like mini chalet/villas with your own little terrace, table and chairs and when first entering the room it looks good. But very quickly I began to smell damp mixed with a plug in freshener. I couldn’t see any mould or damp areas but the smell was quite strong and I’m presuming the owners are aware of it, hence the plug ins.
There was a large gap in the floor by the door threshold where I saw beetles go in to and you could actually hear them scurrying underneath the floor.  The TV has been fitted so high up on the wall you actually get neck ache looking at it. 
There were cobwebs on the windows and around the room, grime on the edge of the shower tray and dust accumulated in the corners of the room. The bin lid in the bathroom and radiators were rusty also. 
In the morning I moved the free standing mirror nearer to the windows to get some light, only to find a large pile of dust, hair and dead insects.
All this says to me that the rooms are not cleaned thoroughly and I wasn’t comfortable. 

I feel that the rooms are overpriced given the condition and it is a real shame. If the rooms were given some TLC it would be a great place to stay.

Great pub, poor accommodation

Spent 3 nights here with sister & brother-in-law to celebrate my and his 70th birthdays. Staff from start to finish were really helpful and friendly. The food throughout was excellent. We all went on the D,B&B basis which was great value. Bedrooms were at the rear of the garden in a block. Rooms were comfortable with king size bed. Felt the bathrooms are ready for a bit of TLC, hence the 4* rating. Good location for exploring the area and would definitely recommend.

Really nice stay

Had a bit to eat here with a friend and we were served by a lovely young lady called Amber; she was friendly, helpful, and couldn’t do enough to help us with any questions we had. Food was of a decent/high standard and we both agreed we’d come back sooner rather than later

Lovely little place

Met with family for lunch - seated quickly - drinks offered and order for food taken promptly.  All the food -2 x ribs, 1 x Hout Bay salad, 1 x chiken schnitzel and fish and chips arrived looking appetising and hot. everybody very satisfied with their dish. A good place for a family lunch

Lunch with grandchildren

Celebrated my Mums birthday at the Crown with a surprise birthday meal & it was fantastic. There were 12 of us and we were accommodated in the Barn. Beautiful pub, great character and a really lovely setting for dinner. Lovely outside garden where we had drinks before our meal. Special mention to Jade for organising and making the booking so seamless, and a special mention again to Jade and the fantastic staff who looked after us so well on Friday 4 August. Everyone was professional, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Lovely meals and a good selection of drinks. A really perfect evening! Thank you
