First impressions were not good. Having found that our room was upstairs, we asked for someone to help my husband with our suitcases, but this was declined. We are both in our 70s and would have been glad of some help. No offer of a cup of tea on arrival, and no fresh milk in the room. We were told we would have to ask if we wanted our room serviced – even though we were staying for three nights. 

The room (‘Biology’) has a strange configuration; much more attractive use could have been made of the period features. Power points are hidden behind cabinets; no tissues in room, no shower cap. Lighting seems inadequate; just two wall lights behind the TV, and two bedside lights. There is a large bath, but only an over-bath shower, which needs some grab rails. However, wifi is reliable, and there is a sea view.

Mercifully things improved when we went in for dinner. There is an attractive and atmospheric dining room, formed we assume from the old school hall. The two waitresses were working very hard and service was prompt. On the first evening I had a Goan fish and prawn curry, very good, and my husband had fish and chips; then we had a crème brulée and sticky toffee pudding respectively. The brulée was stated to be Baileys with blueberry, a slightly strange combination, but you couldn't really taste the Baileys anyway. On request we were given fresh milk and some more teabags for the room.

Breakfast was perfectly OK, though there are no special or unusual menu items. On our first morning we were the only people there, until one other guest appeared later; we had expected there to be far more guests. On the second morning we waited 15 minutes and no one had come to take our breakfast order – my husband had to go and flush someone out. Bread is not home-made, and marmalade and jams are not provided as standard; you have to ask for them, and there’s just one flavour of each. My overall feeling about this hotel is that everything is just rather limited.

For our second dinner my husband had the special crab soup, followed by mussels, both of which he said were fine. I had the baba ghanoush (OK) and the pork burger with hoisin and teriyaki; unfortunately, flavours were missing in action.

A word of appreciation for the evening waitresses, who were engaged, friendly and positive.



Not up to expectations

Had the Botany Room [all rooms named for a school subject].

Pros: Roomy room, had a table, comfortable couch. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom good size, shower good. Location of hotel in village could not have been better. Hotel good shape for its age. Breakfasts were good, plentiful and varied. The staff were nice and helpful.

Cons: Had to go outside, then up some steep narrow stairs to room, should be advised when booking. Lighting for reading terrible anywhere in the room. No shelf space for toiletries in bath. 

It was a pleasant, unique experience in a pleasant unique place.

Go back to school in a very unique place.

I called the hotel before travelling and they gave me numbers of local drivers who could collect me from the station.

I think my drivers name was John, could be wrong though  - blame brain fog.

He got me to the hotel in around half an hour.

The staff greeted me and showed me to my room.

The room was clean and comfortable. 

I must recommend their fish and chips, which my driver told me he picks up every Friday evening. 

Very nice hotel. Great restaurant. Superb breakfast. Everything tastes fresh.  Quaint pub area. 

Lovely place to stay

This is a fun little hotel with a famous front.  It's car park looks out over the harbor as well as out to sea.  The rooms were great as was the restaurant.  I strongly recommend the parsnip soup if it is available.

If you love Doc Martin

Nice homemade scones, lashings of clotted cream and jam we stopped in on recommendations of our hotel for a nice cream tea nice outside seating lovely location especially if ur a Doc Martin fan we come to Cornwall every year and its always a beautiful place to visit Port Isaacs 

Lovely Cream Tea

Fantastic hotel with helpful, friendly staff. The room was clean and had a great view from the window. It was a very convenient location as it was a short walk to everything. We had a tasty breakfast with a variety of options.

Fantastic short stay

We have stayed here several times and have always had a great stay. Staff are friendly and accommodating, our room (Latin) cosy with great views and excellent food. Parking is no longer free but still cheaper than elsewhere and having a designated parking space avoids overcrowding in the car park.

The location of the hotel couldn’t be better - Port Isaac is stunning and there is much locally to enjoy. Highly recommended!

Had a lovely stay

First stop on a three week whirlwind trip from London to Scotland with Cornwall in between. We stayed in the Latin “room” which is enormous, luxurious and comfortable and the view was unforgettable. Restaurant and pub were lovely, food was delicious, service exemplary. Special thanks and kudos to Megan and the other staff members who could not have been more gracious and accommodating. Wonderful!

Wonderful everything!

As avid fans of Doc Martin, we were thrilled to stay in the Old School hotel. We had the Latin room which overlooked the harbor and town.  It was a very large room.  Only drawback is no shower. We  had to use wand in the bath.  Less than desirable but not a huge thing.  Cream tea is delish.  Breakfast was simple and good.  We enjoyed our stay here.

Calling Doc Martin fans!!!
