We have been staying regularly at this hotel for years, even back to the time when it was The Marine Hotel. This was the best stay we have had. The Harbour Hotel really appears to have got its act together service wise. A large part of this is because they have managed to retain a large number of their friendly and helpful staff from last year. 
The introduction of a menu which is available to those staying on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis, as an alternative to the allowance, is excellent.  The portions are slightly smaller, which for us works well and allows us to try 3 courses. The menu is varied and we had excellent food over our 3 nights. 
The new car parking charge is irritating as there really are no other options and there are still some little details which make you wander whether management is regularly walking the hotel. 
We sat outside and unfortunately there were seagull droppings on the seats and tables. A continuing battle I'm sure, but it shouldn't be an issue to a seaside hotel. 
The picture window halfway up the stairs just has Bay trees abandoned or blown over. Probably 30 minutes to fix.
There are other small issues which hold back 5 stars which is frustrating as they are easy to fix and this is not a cheap hotel, however overall this was a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.  


This hotel is so close to being excellent

We had an excellent stay over Christmas.  This hotel has very well trained staff and nothing is too much trouble.  Food was lovely and Restaurant staff very attentive.  Bedroom was equipped with everything you could need and the refreshment tray was well stocked. Car parking was looked after so well.  Would return without a doubt. 

A Christmas to remember 

I took my elderly friend here for a surprise birthday treat. Firstly, even though my friend had obvious mobility problems, and the car park was half empty - it was midweek in January after all - we were only very grudgingly allowed to park providing I handed my keys in to reception. 
The restaurant is huge with the most amazing views; very modern and beautifully furnished. We were impressed. There were several menus to choose from - far too many for a midweek lunch. We both opted for fish meals - hake and sea bass and a glass of wine for my friend. As there were only 2 other couples dining we expected a short wait. It was over an hour later before our meals appeared! By then my friend had finished her wine so I ordered another one. I stuck to water. The food was tasty and the portions were adequate. Not the best presentation and as the only vegetable I had  was peas, not particularly inspiring either. However, we enjoyed the meal and of course the view.
The bill was a bit of a shock as it was getting on for £90! For 2 meals (main course only) and 2 small glasses of wine (£23!) , we though it vastly overpriced. Like many establishments currently, a service charge of 12.5% was added and although we weren't impressed with the service, having had to wait so long, it is very embarrassing and uncomfortable when it is the waiter explaining the service charge and asking if that is okay? I paid and we left but I doubt we will be returning. A rather disappointing experience.

Be prepared to pay for the view!

Very expensive, room location not as expected.  Excellent dining, helpful staff and horrific weather.  The road to the train station washed out on the day we had to leave.  But that is part of travelling.

Bring your wallet

What a wonderful experience…made to feel very welcome right from the very start by Chris on Reception. Room was fantastic with full view of the estuary, and included some very nice complementary items (especially the gin hour!). We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the staff made a real effort with some nice touches including a hand written card and chocolates in our room when we arrived! Relaxing and pleasant environment through out our stay…wonderful spa and restaurant on site which added to an amazing experience. The staff were collectively first class - thank you!

My husband and I spent our wedding anniversary at this hotel on 15 October 2022.

Booking:
- Despite the booking system showing availability and the booking process going through, the rooms were sold out and the payment system had some issues, which made the booking process complicated. The hotel customer service were able to help us find a date and time that suited us still, although this was 1.5 months later than what we had booked for online.
- The booking system was unable to accept any cards; we tried everything from debit to credit cards, online and over the phone to them, but nothing seemed to work. We needed several calls with them to get the booking confirmed. According to HSBC, this was due to new card verification requirement that the hotel's system was not set up for yet.

Guest experience:
- Initially everything seemed great, and overall the hotel has potential for a wonderful stay experience. However, the post-visit service has been so poor that I can no longer recommend this hotel;
1) We had made two advance bookings to the hotel spa. On arrival to the spa, the bookings that were booked to run consecutively were lost in their system and they were not waiting for me. After some discussions, they were able to accommodate me for the treatments, or so I thought - I had to wait a long time between the treatments to find out that I needed go back to the same room for the same therapist for the 2nd treatment, and the therapist didn't know she was booked to do two treatments for me. I wasted for about 40 mins of the Saturday evening and a chance to enjoy the spa pool with my husband (who was waiting for me for that 30 minutes before giving up on me being able to join him).
2) The 2nd treatment caused my skin long-term damage that I'm still visible suffering from and needed expert dermatologist support to recover from, which has been expensive. I have reported this to the hotel three times in writing and also verbally during the stay – first without getting any apology or response and after my 3rd attempt on 12 January 2023 they responded saying "Please be assured your feedback has been forwarded onto our management team, who will be in contact in due course.". Still to date (5 March 2023) they have not contacted me.

Key takeaways: don't trust that your booking gets confirmed even if it initially goes through, be careful with the spa treatments, don't expect service standards or that anyone cares about you after you check out.

I work at one of the most trusted British travel businesses, and the experience I have had with Salcombe Harbour Hotel doesn't meet the basic standards of health & safety and customer relations that would be required for us to recommend the hotel to our inbound customers. It is sad to see that UK's own brands are unable to deliver at a time when consumers are seeking to travel and spend on reliable and safe hospitality services again.

Just don't

The Harbour Hotel made a great positive impression on both of us. It is situated right on the estuary with great views from our room [408]. It felt like the staff were focused on making our stay the best it could be from Reception, cleaning to Dining room. The room was modern, roomy and provided with everything we could want, Tea/Coffee, Gin and sherry etc. Lovely bed & bedding and a well appointed and proportioned bathroom.  We were there for just a few days but enjoyed our stay.

Excellent hotel and Staff

My husband and I had a lovely stay at the Harbour Hotel last week. The setting is great in the heart of Salcombe, the rooms are fab and have amazing views, but the best thing about the hotel is the staff. From the warm greeting by James as we drove in and who parked our car,  to the reception, restaurant and spa staff, they were all brilliant. Especially Helen on reception, who is a really asset to this hotel and made our stay.  We had a great time and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

What a great hotel.

Excellent service and surroundings we were not residents and just enjoyed drinks in the bar lounge.
However when we left having been walking all morning asked for a taxi back to our apartment in salcombe, they very kindly organised a hotel shuttle service to take us back.
Fabulous hotel and will definitely use a harbour hotel in future 🥰

Absolutely amazed by our room! It was beautiful, really took our breath away with incredible view. The staff were so lovely, helpful and kind. Luxury and relaxing environment. Spa was gorgeous and treatments were perfect. We got complementary Prosecco, chocolates, sherry and gin! An amazing way to spend our anniversary. Really couldn’t recommend this hotel enough. Want to return asap!!! Special thanks to the lady who showed us to our room (possibly Helen) x
